He is an alien that has some sort of hidden agenda involving Gordon Freeman. He can enter Gordon's mind, and possibly teleport him. Fortunately, the vortigaunts seem to be able to block his influence.

G-Man. At the end of Half Life he forces you to work for him and puts you in stasis. Twenty years later he takes you out of stasis and that's where Half Life 2 begins. The only other person known to know about his existence is Eli Vance, but there's some evidence to suggest that Dr. Breen may have known about him as well.

G-man. A sort of Alien who takes on human form to probably seem less intimidating.

The G-Man is a gimmick character, created by Valve for the express purpose of adding mystery to the franchise.

The "G" possibly stands for "Government". Mobsters in the 1930's and 1940's used to refer to federal agents as "G-Men"--Government Men. The "G" might also possibly stand for "God" or God-Man. It's possible that he is God in human form.

Some go further to suggest that "G" stands for Guardian. As ironic as it may sound, I've also seen the G-Man as sort of a guardian angel for Gordon.

The G-Man may be an actual human being of some very high importance. Possibly a Majestic 13/Illuminati type of character. A government spook or the "Hidden Hand".

Or, the G-Man may be a member of a highly advanced, intelligent alien life form. Whether he existed before the Resonance Cascade incident or whether he showed up because of it is currently debatable.

Or, as I said, the G-Man may be a sort of a demigod figure. A God that takes the body of a human.

Truthfully, no one even knows if the G-Men takes material form or not. He may be a ghostly apparition of some sort. His ability to show up and leave a scene virtually undetected seems to suggest just that.

But, like I said, to me the G-Man seems like a gimmick character. The kind of character that is used only to somewhat enhance and mystify the franchise as a whole. In the future, Valve may reveal who is or they might not.

G-man. Essentially the reason why Gordon is the star of the show. Without G-man, no half-life, no half-life 2 and episodes. I quite like him cos he's a blessing and a curse, a being who is neither good nor bad.

We'll probably never know much more about him. I think we'll be getting something similar to the ending of Lost and a lot of people annoyed by not getting answers. XD

No it wouldn't be stupid if done correctly... I'm no writer, but it could be that Gordon somehow learns to travel back in time...after he fails in something BIG... but the transport affects him and that's why he talks like that. To me the GMan is getting worse in his voice from the start of HL1, maybe cause he travels so often back in time....

my theory is that the g-man is a door to door salesman if you will. he travels time and space dealing in heroes. for the chance to save your species you do what he asks to further himself in the universe. this would after all explain why he is seen talking to the rebels , and his commets regarding eli vance in episode 2.

Considering the Combine go about enslaving races, I think this is a good theory.

If he was Gordon after being able to go back in time not try to stop the Resonance Cascade from happening and not **** up his own life?

g-man stands for "government man". It is a term used to describe people working for questionable, classified, or anonymous government agencies, and over the years has gained a reputation of being mysterious.

Originally, iirc, McCarthy had "g-men" during his reign of terror and eventually the men-in-black worked their way into both conspiracy theories and real life.

I think Breens words are quite interesting, suggesting that he knew quite a lot. he says you've been a fine pawn for who control you (possibly suggesting gman isn't working for a good goal) and he also says that a contract for gorden was open for the highest bidder. so I think its indeed likely that gman is a door to door salesman and that youare important for Gman

but I guess all thats really of interest has already been said
