I've enjoyed those games too, but an MMO? I hope not.

Just like I'd like to see Privateer 3 (which I probably never will  ), Another followup to DreamFall would be nice.

Unless the Dreamfall chapters will be more like TLJ than Dreamfall, I wont be promoting the game. Dreamfall wasn't even close to 'average'. All you did in Dreamfall was talking, running and fighting... puzzles was non-existant The fighting was boring as hell (too simple to be exciting) and the ending was the worst ending I've seen in a long time (you end up feeling like you have accomplished nothing). The ending was kinda like if the creators of Lost only aired 4 episodes, then told you the next episodes might be aired in a few years For me to even bother with a sequel there has to be some puzzles

I liked Dreamfall. I've always been fascinated by good dialog and great writing, the last game had both. Would be nice to have some good puzzles in the episodes, but if they're not done right, they can ruin the flow of the game, especially one that is as dialog-driven as Dreamfall.

TLJ is a great game, had lots of fun with it, I look forward to seeing what they do next.

Episodic gaming... well I hope they can pull it off.

Fair point about the puzzles! Could have been a little bit harder, but not so hard as to stop you progressing with the story!

To be honest the game is story driven! The story is the most important aspect of the game! It is why we play Dreamfall and love it so much. The game play is not without faults but they are overshadowed by a wonderful enviroment and an amazing story!

With regard to the future of the series the developers seem to be pretty lazy about things, and yes I too am worried that we may have to wait a long time between releases. Lets hope they get their act together!

I enjoyed the unique world TLJ and Dreamfall took place in. Dreamfall also had a very nice immersion factor and engaging dialogue. I just started on TLJ. I played dreamfall on xbox. I just picked up them both off steam for 25 dollars. I still seem to like Zoe the best out of the two. I've played little of TLJ so I haven't played as april long, but April's personality sucked in dreamfall. She seemed so self centered as opposed to Zoe just being sweet girl next door.

April was worse in TLJ - she spent the entire game whining. Seriously. :|

Anyway, I've got absolutely nothing against episodic games (Sam and Max ftw!), and since TLJ and Dreamfall already had 'chapters', I think it could work fairly well.

As for the focus on combat in Dreamfall, I'd argue that it was fairly necessary - one of my main complaints about TLJ (aside from April's whining and the endless random fantasy cliche's) was that the 'fighting' was just so absurd; it just totally ruined the immersion when you couldn't be hurt by the Gribbler, the Snapjaw, and so on.
Sure, the combat system was terrible, but it was better than TLJ's "just let it attack you until you solve the puzzle" system.

April is a much, much better character in TLJ. I found her very charming and one of my most memorable video game characters. Shes very well voiced, and while she may complain as Planeforger pointed out, you have to put her character into context. Shes been ripped from her regular life and has been thrown into a battle between two worlds, and is presumed to be the savior that has been prophecized. Wouldn't you be a little uneasy and cranky as well in that situation? :P

I loved both games. I'm glad you started this thread. I played Dreamfall first and wasn't going to play TLJ because the graphics were so dated, but I needed more after playing dreamfall so I played it and it was fantastic. Yes the puzzles were better in TLJ with dreamfall.

If I had played TLJ first I would of found the smaller easier puzzles in dreamfall disappointing. I would of also hated the fight bits, but I didn't cos I played it first so accepted as "this is how the game is".

I'd like a nice big fat conclusive part 3 instead of short episodes.

ALSO, how bad was the PC default mouse/keyboard controls! what were they thinking. Fortunately you could set them to behave like a normal game.

I used the 360 controller, no problems with the controls. Some games are just better with a gamepad, especially Dreamfall. It's basically an interactive movie, I don't watch movies sitting in a chair in front of my monitor, so relaxing on my bed with a gamepad was sooooo much better.

Like I said I just started TLJ. I haven't gotten to know the April before. But the April afterwards hardly seems likeable. I hope from playing TLJ I can found out why she stayed in Arcadia. Her friends back in stark seemed pretty worried.

Oh yea and as for the episodic content. I don;t really care how long it takes just as long as they continue it. I would really like to find out what happens.

So glad I started this thread!

I have never been able to discuss The Longest Journey or Dreamfall with other fans of our beloved saga. Most of my friends are not into the same stuff as I am, It's great to meet people who feel the same about this series.

Yes April was a little whiny, but it gave her character! If you were in the same situation wouldn't you be upset! The story appeals to anyone who has experienced life in general. Who has never been faced with a new challenge or task, who has not faced a change from childhood to adulthood! Its the struggle we all face, and it's shown so well in this journey. I've been in situations in my life, where I didn't know what was next or which direction to go. I felt lost and alone much like Zoe. The Longest Journey is a story about everyones life, told in a fantastic and imaginative way! Possibly the greatest tale ever told, with a real message given in a surreal enviroment!

P.S.

Who could not love Zoe! I work with the real life version of Zoe, looks the same, and has the exact same voice and accent!

The Longest Journey is one of my top favourite games. There are some games where I play constantly for the gameplay itself, such as the Civilization series, but the Longest Journey went beyond the time that I spent playing it. I looked at the world with a little bit more wonder and magic. I was able to identify a bit with April and felt her growth from a gloomy, pessimistic, 'why me?' attitude to someone who began to accept the responsibilities that were given to her (while remaining refreshingly witty and sarcastic the whole time :D). Probably a little weird for a guy saying all that, but I guess it's just because the themes in TLJ are so universal.

I also really liked Dreamfall, but felt a greater impact from TLJ. Possibly because there was more interaction with the people and the environments in TLJ.

I actually have 2 copies of each game because I bought them both seperately, then bought the Dreamfall game of the year edition that included both games plus the wonderful Dreamfall soundtrack. Then I encouraged some other friends to buy the game, then bought the game as a gift for a friend... and I'll probably get Dreamfall: Chapters whenever it comes out. I guess that means I'm a pretty big fan. :)

Considering how busy Ragner Tornquist is with The Secret World right now, I wonder when we will see Dreamfall chapters. What do you think about funcom's idea of possibly making a Longest Journey mmo?

Me I don't know what to think. I am not sure how they would do it. Half the appeal of the TLJ universe is the story. So an mmo might be stretch unless they come out with some ideas to better blend storytelling with the mmo genre. Well it might not be too much of a stretch, Uru live when it was running on gametap would have what you call episode week every month. Events and characters would play out a certain week every month to continue pushing the story forward. But how do you honestly get something like 5000 people all involved in the type of storytelling we've come to expect from the series at the same time? It will certainly take some imagination. Not all hope is lost though TLJ series alone should be enough to prove the guys over at funcom are not short on the imagination department.

The Longest Journey original (the only traditional adventure game I've played) was such a wonderfully atmospheric and emotionally captivating experience. I just grew to adore April Ryan; the only game character that I've ever had feelings for. Now if she only came in the human form:D

Yep I liked crow too! But also have a soft spot for Benrime Salmin! Thought the new reformed Roper Klax was so funny! Fiona was good as well with her rude humor and Captain Horatio Nebevay had such a sarcastic humor, reminds me of me actually!

Don't like Reza Temiz or Damien Cavanaugh, "Stay away from my Zoe, god damn it"

Ragnor Tornquist should stick to continuing the series before trying to introduce new games. The Longest Journey / Dreamfall series is Funcoms biggest money maker so far and they need to reward the fans for years of loyalty.

The Longest Journey as an MMO? Well maybe but not with the main characters that we have seen so far! My guess is that it will be set between the two games. The time gap is there, and also the Tyren occupation of Marcuria and the Azadi liberation would be a good backdrop for an MMO.

The Secret World is a game funcom has been wanting to make for over 10 years now. They were developing it at the time plans for Dreamfall came along. Eventually they had to pull some of the team off Secret world and put it on dreamfall to speed up the time it was taking to develop the game. I think by now Funcom seems quite determined to get it out. And it may not be till afterwards we see the dreamfall chapters. As usual Ragner is one of its key designers. Of course they still have to deal with their launch with Age of Conan first. Considering the two games use the same engine, I wonder what will happen is Conan just totally bombs. Either way I think its likely we have a good wait ahead of us.

Hmm I don;t know about Conan hurting the future of TLJ. Funcom is a big company if the game bombs they'll be able to cut their loses and get back on their feet. However since Conan and The Secret World use the same engine for both of thier games, I was saying I wonder what kind of trouble this could spell for TSW if Conan bombs. Considering The Secret World is a game Ragner and the rest at funcom have really put a lot of time and interest into. Its possible, and not necessarily theres plenty of things that could go wrong with Conan besides the engine it runs on, but if that is the case I can see them pushing TSW back even further. They may want to use a different engine or what not and if that happens it might not be till after TSW is done that they can even get around to Dreamfall Chapters. Funcom is a major mmo company and while TLJ is one of thier most popular series, I am not sure how much of a priority it is for them to get the those chapters out. It seems they will surely come though. Tornquist said he is devoted to finishing the story. But for right night Funcom has alot on its plate it needs to clear off.

If they make a TLJ mmo, its probably going to be after the events of dreamfall chapters.

As I said in a former post though since story is a big thing in TLJ, and basically the weakest aspect of an mmo I am curious how they could possibly pull it off. I doubt for some reason Zoe or April will really take much part in the mmo if they decide to make it. And since story is best told from a personal perspective with events characters who you are playing as, an mmo would just not provide the depth and personal experience required for storytelling. MMO's are often the complete opposite. Sure they are personal in a sense you are roleplaying as your character you are there with him/her as he/she grows in strength, but anyone who has ever played an mmo knows despite all of that, its a very anti-personal experience. You are more like a number. In Uru I felt like I was sort of watching from the side lines. Its like watching a couple fight at the mall. You don't know what they are fighting about. You are not there in their shoes arguing with that other person. Its likely you don't have the facts nor know whats going on.You are a 3rd party. I guess my imagination has hit a wall for the moment but thats what I see as happening with a TLJ mmo. If thats the case it just does not do it justice.

The reality is they just want the world and the name. TLJ universe is unique. It sort of offers something to both those who want a more sci fi or modern based mmo, and it has something to offer to those who want a more traditional fantasy setting. TLJ is popular they can sell it on name alone. Plenty of companies do this. Why else are we hearing about a call of duty mmo and what not. MMO genre is the thing to do in gaming. So everyone wants a quick cash in on their brand names...Maybe I am just being cynical.

Check out The Secret World. Theres not much info on the game right now, but what is there is interesting. You'll see its much more different from what mmost mmos have to offer. Other than that I can't think of anything else to add to this thread. If you have anything you want to add go right ahead you lead the discussion.

Yes and I like it too a lot... I haven't seen, played yet a game like this before as if your watching a movie then, you just can't stop continuing solving that puzzles and waiting for the outcome youv'e done on yes/no etc. issues.

Hoping that if this could have a sequel let the players be given enough freedom, open-ended game and a slight harder difficulties on combat.

I'd also say TLJ is better than Dreamfall. The fighting felt tacked on, the story was more cliched and convoluted, and the characters and locales weren't as memorable. Still a great game though.

Sort of like seeing the ending without knowing the beginning. Dreamfall isn't the end of the series but I think you know what I mean. Like stumbling upon a really interesting movie that would have liked to have seen from the beginning but theres only 30 minutes left. So you make a promise to watch the whole thing later.

I don't know about everything that is going on, but it will all make more sense to me after I finish TLJ.

I actually played Dreamfall first before TLJ. The story in Dreamfall was pretty self-contained, even though it is the sequel to TLJ. But, obviously, I felt like I was missing character and story elements when I was playing as April in Dreamfall. When I finally played through TLJ, it actually didn't feel disjointed with Dreamfall at all. The strength of both stories set them enough apart that it was not majorly important which one was played first. But, I think that I would have understood April a lot more in Dreamfall if I had played through TLJ first.

More importantly, I would have gotten an even bigger kick out of the 'evolution' of Roper Klacks from TLJ to Dreamfall. In Dreamfall, I just found him a little odd, and April's matter-of-fact description of him didn't do him justice. The situation with Roper Klacks in TLJ was one of the most hilarious moments in general that I have ever experienced. I think I almost broke my computer desk because I was banging it so hard from the gut busting laughing. :D

I finally got around to playing Dreamfall...I'm a few hours into it. The story is intriguing, and it has a nice atmospher; decent graphic and music, but it is more like an interactive movie than a game... sure I love a good story but the gameplay is clearly lacking. It is all fetch quests and "click on this to continue the story." The action sections are also very clumsy and annoying.

It feels like a very dumbed down adventure game. The puzzle elements are more trial and error, or just "do the obvious" rather than anything approaching what you would expect in a good adventure game.

Who's doing the episodic? Hopefully it's GameTap because I already have a subscription to them :?

TLJ is one of my favorite games ever, I haven't played dreamfall because I fear it would screw up my memories of how awesome TLJ is.

in most respects you're right, but when I played it, it was exactly what I was after, something I can sit back, relax and enjoy.

[QUOTE="lenson"]The Secret World is a game funcom has been wanting to make for over 10 years now. Either way I think its likely we have a good wait ahead of us. claytoma

Didn't think of that possibility! Good point, Funcom have put lots of money and time into Conan. If it doesn't do well its going to put the future of The Longest Journey in question!

I have a cunning plan! I'm trying to buy lots of copies of Dreamfall, I have 4 at the moment and one of them is the Limited Edition copy! I will buy Conan also, don't know what the expect from it but at least I'll be giving Funcom some cash, we should all do the same thing! Then we can ensure Dreamfall Chapters gets made and soon! Sounds crazy but Its my plan and I'm sticking to it! LOL!

Did you prefer Dreamfall over the original TLJ?

Well that's a difficult one!

TLJ was fantastic, I enjoyed it very much. The puzzle aspect made the game more interactive in a lateral thinking sense than Dreamfall, the characters were great also! TLJ also seem longer, maybe that's because of the puzzle solving, maybe not! The story in the first game was slightly different also, you were given more background on the characters, and the tongue in cheek humor was hilarious. Stark was portrayed as a Blade Runner esque future world while in Dreamfall, Stark was closer to our own reality, so it was easier to identify with.

Dreamfall I simply loved. The new 3D environment and gameplay made it a more hands on approach even if it was short on the puzzle aspect, you got a sense of constant progress and rarely came to an impasse, but it still didn't seem that you were along for the ride! I identified more with Zoe than i did with April, obviously I really liked both main characters, but Zoe seemed to have more in common with me than April did.

The modern look of Dreamfall versus the dated look of TLJ doesn't sway my opinion in any way as the story telling is the most important aspect. But I would probably have to side with Dreamfall in the end for one important reason. The fact that the story in Dreamfall, was filled with emotion for me, and that the sad ending reduced me to tears (not ashamed to admit it), would be the deciding factor.

The series is the best I have ever experienced and both games rank as being the greatest I have ever played!

Don't worry you won't be dissapointed by Dreamfall, they compliment one and other very well!

You'll be interested to see whats happened in Marcuria after the first game, and also how disilussioned poor April has become! Do play it its a great game and definitely worth playing. Let me know what you decide to do and what you think if you do play it!

In the meantime keep posting about the original game I'd love to hear more of peoples TLJ experience!

I didn't play the original game when it came out first, I actually played the Dreamfall demo first when I got it on the discs with PC Gamer magazine. That got me interested, and I bought the game when it was released. Before I got around to playing it I found out about The Longest Journey. Of course I decided I was going to play TLJ first but couldn't find it anywhere. Luckily when then limited edition pack was released with both games I got it and played TLJ first then Dreamfall.

Thing is, even though TLJ was over 5 years old at the time and looking dated it was still a great experience, just go to show how brilliant the game is. Wish Funcom had patched it or touch it up a bit before the re-release with anti-aliasing.

April Ryan's voice and mannerisms pissed me off so much that I only spent about two or three hours with the game before deciding that it wasn't worth it, no matter how good a game it actually is. I never bothered with Dreamfall, but it's a game I've been meaning to try out for a long time.

The Longest Journey was the most dissapointing game I have ever played. Its a good game, but it has way too many flaws, beginning with the convoluted puzzles (remember the rubber duck puzzle?) and going from there. The middle sections were the best, but even then there is a puzzle or 2 that isn't intuitive and will have u scrambling for a walkthrough. By the end, the game seemed like too long a journey, and I was looking forward to the end, which also was dissapointing.
