I love Starcraft 2. Its right up there with TF2, CS and WC3 as far as multiplayer time spent. The one thing I have against it, which is honestly a very ME thing, is the intimidation that comes from the game. I dont mind losing in games, sports, whatever, I played Varsity basketball, swam across several countries, dont care about dying in MW2 or TF2, but for whatever reason I honestly feel a "game on the line", "this is important" feeling whenever I do a 1v1. Pretty telling on my performance too being that I am gold and plat in 2v2 and up, where as I was just demoted to silver in 1v1.

..

Its a little ridiculous and somehow I love the game for it, but the result has been me playing less and watching replys (mine and others) so much more, which is really a first for me. So I guess this is a shout out, who, if anyone feels like me, who is intimidated (if you are how did you get over that), who feels cocky out there, how do you feel clicking on the find a match button in 1v1?

I sorta get like that, only with sc 2. I find that forcing yourself to play actually gets you over the hump quick, I find myself almost too eager for another game after my first 1v1 of the day. That and smoking up can help once n a while. Edit : Ranked low Diamond, I feel im more of a mid platinum player but whatever...

edit2: Post my sc2 ID in a bit.

There are two feelings I get when playing SC2 that I don't get with other games: 1) I too get the feeling of "OMG this **** is important sooo much pressure" that I've honestly never felt from any other game. It was so bad when I first got the game that I avoided ladder matches for a few weeks after buying the game. This feeling has since subsided into above average anticipation when starting a game after getting nearly a hundred games under my belt. (still not that great at it though, upper silver.) 2) I also get a minor feeling of the Tetris Effect, where I find myself critiquing my games and thinking of counters and/or improvements to my build order whenever my brain is idling, usually while I'm laying in bed trying to sleep.

Yea I get that with SC 2 in online games, especially in 1 vs. 1. I had the same feeling when playing ranked games in DoW II though, that game is even more intense and right off the bat, while SC 2 requires you be really efficient and not make any mistakes.

Probably has something to do with your wanting to win, and also in anticipation of the amount of concentration you will need to apply during the match.

I find in most online RTS games, especially SC 2 and DoW II, that after a really close match i'm absolutely exhausted by the end of it because of how hard and how long i had to focus. If I win the match, the feeling of satisfaction is probably one of the greatest I know of that can be achieved on a regular basis.

I feel eager most times cuz I dont play that much but I get what you're saying. One thing that helped me get over that is the placement matches. They were like tests to me. I practiced in custom games just to do them and eventually it got more and more fun as I played. You get more confident. I dont know.

I guess the end result is that I am not alone in this. I understand the practice would make this feeling go away, but I find it rather amusing that game that I honestly love to play I feel sometimes hesitant about playing. I guess this is pretty much exactly how I feel to the dot. I have about 47 league wins right now, guessing with the average 50% or so win/lose that would put me at just under a 100 game.

..

My comments are by no means meant as an insult to the game, I honestly have a blast playing it, but its probably the first game where I actually feel apprehensive of playing despite enjoying it...

Totally agree, I play both games and I think that rts in multiplayer are the most emotionally involving and competitive challenge that a player could face. Aside from this, I only really feel myself nervous playing rts or in a 1 vs 1 fighting game or in a 1 vs 1 duel deathmatch as in UT or Quake.

I did have a similar feeling to this, im kinda surprised someone had brought this up actually. When i first started SC2, i was intimidated and kind of like 'oh crap, im going to get owned' and i knew it. but, once you play more and more games, gain more confidence, knowing your build orders, and how other races work. watching husky starcraft and your own replays, you kind of gain a sense of confidence from knowledge i guess.

and sometimes during midgame, you get a little nervous because you have spent so much dedication and time on your army, only for it to get killed from a better form of opposite composition.

i totally agree with you man!! but dont worry, im sure you'll one day be fine, and be happy on clicking the 1v1 buttton, knowing your going to take the win!

omg you get this too? in bed thinking 'oh damm, i shouldve done this build or mad this army'

things like that come to you after, never during. thats the thing with rts games
