Developers like Bohemia Interactivem, Crytek, and Neocore are pretty creative in what they're doing. They seem to focus less on "set pieces" like American designers, and focus more on like interesting game aspects.

American game devs tend to be like hollywood-esque stuff like COD or annoying hipster sidescrollers.

Japanese devs are getting better, but it seems like their output isn't really that high.

BI and CDR Project are pretty awesome as far as Euro devs go (I think Gothic 1-3 and Risen1/2 devs are also Euro to, enjoy there games alot, especially Gothic2)

Crytek is decent but could have done alot more after Crysis1 imo. Wouldn't put em in the same league as BI or CDR Project for me atleast personally.

Agreed. TC, I think you're looking into the the call of duty, hollywood style games too much. There are good western game developers that are working on games like Wasteland 2, Torment successor, and many others that don't rely on action sequences to sell.

European devs are doing great things though.  So I agree.

Crytek had amazing creativity when they made Far Cry and Crysis, those games were great additions to the FPS genre. Since then though, they've regressed more than impressed. Still there are quite a few european (often eastern european) developers who are doing good things

Yeah, Crytek.

Crysis compared to like Gears of War, or even Half Life, is way more open-ended and sandbox-ey. Far Cry is like that too.

Bohemia? Yes, Crytek? Nah. they make awesome technology and their games are usually solid, but nothing amazing (apart from the graphics). It's too bad GSC Game World went under. It still upsets me that we're never going to get a true sequel to Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl.

2nd one is still more sandboxey than call of duty and it gives you more options to be creative in taking out enemies.

Yes, and high lights them with big yellow arrows.  It's just an illusion of a sandbox.

Your examples mostly suck (crytek? really?)...but I do agree with the sentiment. However, I would point towards developers like Larian Studios as a better example of a game company willing to take risks on a game concept.

I tend to agree (although I would argue that there are ALOT of Northern American Devs who are doing great things, but does not get recognized due to how low profile thier games are).

Overall I think it has something to do with the size of the dev teams, and cost of production.

Alot of the really sucessful Devs in the US grew alot, which in turn made making games really expensive, a risk most pubs would not allow. So to make safe bets, they pretty much killed off creativity.

It is what you see from all over the world though, the bigger the dev, the less creative they can afford to be.

Now the European Dev scene tends to work in smaller teams, and very differnt envioments, not to mention that I can count atleast 3 distinct lines in demographics as to where the creative input comes from (Northern European, Southern European and Eastern European) Which all have very varied backgrounds and world views, so Europe is still this witches kettle of input and ideas, taken from all over those backgrounds (This may not really be a cause, but I think it may be)

As stated though, I think the primary cause is the size and thus cost of many US dev teams. Publishers in Europe is also smaller and thus more prone to risk taking.

I really like the games we see from Europe, I always have, while I feel like the more prominent devs in the US are losing thier edge (Not all of them mind you, I can name a good handful who are quite unique and still manages to make me glee with childish anticipation). The European are often far less afraid to make games with really heavy "adult themes" which are NOT boiled down to bloody murders, and far from as politically correct.

As a side note, the shift in the far east also gives raise to some interresting games these days, it is just beginning to show, but you can feel how the older devs over there gives way to new ones, with thier ideas and storys they want to tell.

It seems like in America they're either huge hollywood-like studios or tiny indies

Europe yeah, seems more mid-sized. Mid-sized like gives you pretty good capability in graphics but small enough to let you take creative risk.

2k Czech I think is a good one. Like, there are a lot of really impressive sandboxy elements in Mafia 2.

And that's been the big problem.  Either huge budget dumbed down AAA games trying to appeal to everybody and their grandmothers or artsy puzzle/platformers by made by hipsters on shoestring budgets.

We need that middle ground and the more niche genres back.  At least (as far as RPGs go) it looks like we'll finally be getting some much needed relief in the form of games like Wasteland 2, Project Eternity, Chaos Chronicles, Tides of Numenera, Divinity: Original Sin, Shadowrun Returns, Dead State...

I wish we could get a similar revival with some of my other favorite genres like tactical shooters and survival horror games.  Â
