I am thinking about trying to make a little money building and selling computers. Whenever I go to the computer stores and see the dell or HP computers $500 without a monitor, and think to myself wow I could do that way cheaper. So could you guys give me your opinion on this pure budget build and what I should charge to make a little money.

What about the OS? lol anyway most stores don't even sell single core processor configurations anymore. you want a system that has bang for the buck, but this system would be like scraping the bottom of the bargain bin. Anyway hold on and I'll build you a more suitable system that will attract customer attention.

for future reference you are much better off writing what the actual items are and just posting a public wishlist of your build. Saves you and the people helping you alot of time.

I just feel that is getting really excessive for what most people need. I see these computers 8 gbs of RAM and 500gb hard drive. It seems to me most people need a computer that is reasonably fast that can get online and do word and photo editing. I am currently running a regor 245 dual core with 1gb 533 RAM with 4670 graphics card and it is great for games for the amount it cost, but my old pentium 4 computer can still do 99% of what most people do on a computer. I guess what I am trying to say is Really how much does the average person need?

With knowing this might lead to 5 or more days of moderation, I am stunned and I ask you why would you say such a thing? You can get a free windows 7 that will be miles better than XP and you won't pay for it, and the funcionality will be the same except windows upgrade or something which barely who uses.

Windows 7 RC would be fine if the OP was building it for personal use, but the intent here is to resell. And loading an OS that will limit itself in 6 months and eventually become unusable won't be good for reputation or business.

It'll be very hard to beat OEM's in the low-end section by building it yourself. For example Dell has a similar spec model for less than 300 (Inspirion series) and at the same price level, a Studio Desktop which is way better than the configuration you proposed in just about any possible way(+ it has warranty, customer support, a legally obtained OS and productivity software).

That thing is junk. I can get a bargain basement Dell that's a dual core and come's with a keyboard, mouse, OS and monitor for maybe $300, especially if I check their refurbished section. You can't compete in the low end segment.

If you want to take on the big guys, build high end systems or gaming rigs. The OEMs are a ripoff in that segment.

Yes but those pre-built Dell models don't last very lomg because the case has no air circulation whatsoever and the RAM is cheap and crappy and will need to be replaced in a year or so. Also the power supply is a no named brand that will eventually kill at least your motherboard.
