i am here to help you with 95% of all the vista problems you may be having!

let me start things off.

A game wont work and your asking yourself why? do these things!

1. make sure that you are playing as an administrator!

2. Try and just put XP sp2 compatablity mode on that sucker!

3. update your drivers!

4. make sure your computer can actually run the game, wise consumer!

5. installing an os does not make your computer faster, it is not intended to do that!

6. make sure vista is up to date!

7. just because your crappy computer cant run a game does not make it a vista compatability issue, upgrade!

8. Make sure you have the very latest updates for the game you are trying to play!

9. if you are experiencing slow down in games make sure you are not running any other programs.

10. Vista uses more ram than XP, just like XP uses more ram than 2000, just like 2000 uses more ram than 98, just like 98 uses more ram than 95, just like 95 uses more ram than windows 3, so if you are experiencing a slow downs you can do one of these 2 things

1. increase your paging file size(this may or may not work)

2. buy some more ram(this will almost allways increase performance, but make sure to research and get the right kind of ram.

11. in the rare occasion you are missing a DLL file you can download them at dll-files.com (just search for the file you are missing)

The only game I have had problems whit on vista is SupCom,whitsh tuned out to be just that, a RAM problem so I increased the amount of ran the game jused and it worked to a "ok". I can now play for maby 1h 40min instead of before when i could only play for 30min.

And I suppose I have some crash problems whit Black and White 2... when its a big map and lots of ppl and buildings..

Silence the haters? I would think this should encourage them even more. A person shouldnt have to fix a product they spend 100+ dollars on themselves, it should be working out of the box. ESPECIALLY (!!!) an operating system.

lol yea, I don't either. To be honest, I never understood what all the crap talk about vista is all about. Man when I got vista, I was so scared to use it because all the crap I read on here. Then I installed it and haven't had no issues. I am starting to think it isn't vista, but the user.

Name one windows OS that has worked like it should on release. Oh wait, you can't. So if you wish to complain about vista, you better be doing the same about XP. After all, it didn't work without flaws at launch either, hell it still doesn't. WTF do you think those windows updates are you get? To fixs flaws in your XP. ;)

Well, Ive never had a single problem with Windows 95, 98, ME, or XP. I chalk that up to the fact that I usually wait 1+ years to upgrade, however, so I guess thats not really fair concerning OSs recently released.

And atleast the updates are automated. A lot of people, specifically casual gamers, dont have the know-how to modify stuff like that so its hard to fix Vista manually.

But still, I stand by my comment out of priniciple (even if its not how the real world of software works).

As I've said a thousand times before, most of these compatability issues are down to sloppy programming (or in most cases, exploiting a security hole) in the game itself.

Vista is a good O/S. You could argue about how you don't get on with the GUI, but jeez, the core is by far an improvement. This is WHY there are compatability issues - Microsoft by large fixed a lot of problems/holes (that non-MS developers exploited) that were resident in XP.

Ahh I never thought of it from that perspective, very interesting.

Is it safe to say that future games shouldnt have many compatability issues then since they will likely stop exploiting those holes?

you sicken me, since when did operating systems from the same damn company get fanboys?

are you sad that vista wont work good on your miniscule 256 mb of ram?

vista is the new kid on the block, stop being a bully and make nice.

all the people who say there are major bugs in vista havent even used vista, and if they have they havent used it in the past year or more.

It is quite a tricky one really, because in all fairness Microsoft aren't *that* helpful when it comes to giving out support/advice regarding the DX API, so in the past people have found their own ways of getting things to work as they like. Which is why some developers have abused security holes and so forth. It worked for them then, but unfortunately it did mean that should the holes ever get patched up (which would always be unlikely in the same version of Windows - these are fundamental flaws in the code), the game would usually hit compatability problems.

It is safe to say that any developer that follows Microsoft's guidelines for the DX API to the letter won't have any compatability issues. It is also relatively safe to say that any game released in the future will have do things the proper way (of course there are always hold-outs who - like Rockstar - would be holding onto their beloved GTA 3 engine and simply refuse to update a core function of it)

Unfortunately, Vista came at such a time that after 7 years of XP, developers *really* started to get lazy, lulling themselves into the false belief that XP will be here forever - and so they never really bothered to change their bad habits.

9 times out of 10, if your computer crashes, it is not the fault of the O/S, more the software you're running (inc drivers). This is why Mac OS has enjoyed so much stability in the past because the few people who develop for it professionally, do it properly. If Mac OS ever reached the popularity, or should I say, have the same number of third-party applications available for it - it would encounter precisely the same issues. ;)

Vista in its current shape isn't worth $200. I got it on my new laptop and wasn't impressed. I uninstalled Vista and put XP back in hehe.

I can see Vista being ok for the casual PC users (the ones that just turn them on to surf webs, play games, listen to music, watch movies, etc...) It's those of us who do a lot of work on the PC find Vista isn't up to par.

Oh, don't forget that Vista runs games 5-10% slower than XP, too.

Not any more, the latest performance update fixed this problem. Now games tend to run the same or faster on Vista.
