http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-02-21-the-witcher-2-sold-1-1-million-copies-in-2011 "Fantastic PC (and soon Xbox 360) RPG, The Witcher 2, sold 1,110,055 copies last year, developer CD Projekt Red has revealed." "Of those copies, 270,000 were sold via digital distribution platforms: 40,000 on GOG.com, which leaves the lion's share of the remainder presumably to Steam (numbers not disclosed). But most "remarkable" to CDPR managing director Adam Badowski, was that 401,543 copies of The Witcher 1 were sold last year. "I have to admit, though, that the sales results for The Witcher, five years on from the game's premier, are remarkable," he commented."

Great sales for a great developer and the witcher 1 shows just how digital distribution contributes to long sales life for games selling 400k after 5 years is incredible how many console games can put up those type numbers after that long a period out on the market? Witcher 2 should easily sell another million or 2 in the next couple of years on pc.

Not to mention the 6 million they will sell on 360 accoridng to our senior analyst loosingENDS.

Anyway they deserve it too. And to think TW2 was pirated a lot more. Imagine if they sold all those copies too. CDPR are a new powerhouse in gaming. They know what gamers want

I guess I need to force myself to get past the first chapter of Witcher 1, it was so slow and didn't capture my attention at all, but I've been told it gets much better later in the game.

Couldn't be more right! Definitely give it an hour or two more. It's strange because that's usually my pet peeve. If a game doesn't get my attention in the first hour then it's not work playing, but for some reason I made that exception with The Witcher. I'm glad I did

They did release the numbers during 2011 with more detail, too: http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/11/11/gog-release-witcher-2-sales-stats-steam-dominates-all-competitors-combined/ It was: 200k Steam 40k GOG 10k Impulse + D2D + GamersGate Leaves another 20k copies somewhere else.

I think that just covers the 270k digital distribution quoted by the developers. Retail must make up the rest of the 1.1 million copies in 2011, which seems like a lot for retail

Half a mill almost for a 5 year old game this year, not bad!

Im surprised that so many retail copies got sold! Although two of friends and my cousin both bought collectors edition copies on disc.

The retail version was the best version though because you got a nuch of stuff with it. Maps walkthroughs DVD soundtrack a coin. And it wasn't a collector's edition either. It was just the normal Retail version. So maybe people liked this and got it in retail. I know I did

well the sales are not amazing, but considering that the witcher is not a household name like elder scrolls and keeping in mind piracy(that could easily be 1-2 million downloads) ,well these are pretty good numbers

Just get past the second chapter, that's when the game truly hooks you in. Trust me I've been in the same position (always gave up playing it after the first or second chapter, too boring) but it was oh so worth it sticking through in the end.

I've been eying this game, but I'm not sure I will like it. I've been playing Skyrim and I loved it, but I'm afraid I will compare The Witcher II too much with it. Also, I never played part one. Is this game really story intensive or will I be able to pick it up easily without knowing anything about its LORE?

1.1M is pretty low sales if you ask me. And TW1 was selling for 5$ on GOG, so 400k still isn't that much

With something so niche and 0 marketing, it's pretty big, shame more people don't know about the game, because that's the only thing "stopping" it, even if some heard about "the Witcher", they didn't have a clue about the series or how it plays and it also has its share of bad advertising (I have quite a lot of friends that hate on 2 because they played the first act of Witcher 1 and hated it, I know I'm not the only one that knows such people).

They can only get more recognition with every title (like the jump in sales Witcher 1 -> Witcher 2), it going multiplatform is the obvious choice, more platforms = more buyers with every title they make even if they still have 0 marketing.

If those numbers are good, I'm very glad. I liked Witcher 2 a lot. I noticed Deus Ex:Human Revolution did well but their North American numbers could've been higher. I wish I wasn't so backlogged on games as I would go out and get Deus Ex: HR and boost their numbers (albeit by one.) It's my next new buy once I get caught up on me gamin'.

Also, European games are neat. Playing Witcher 2 you feel like your playing something straight out of some dark, gnarled eastern European forest. I am also digging E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy bya French developer. I bet I would love the Ukrainian STALKER series but I already spend a lot of gaming time in the Fallout world and the two seem like they'd betoo similar to put hundreds of hours into. Asian games like Devil May Cry or even Bayonetta just don't draw in my attention on the other hand. (Love their food though!)

people pretty well underestimate how well retail generally does - especially in europe!

Well, The Witcher did sell an additional 400,000 thanks to being available via digital distribution.

Color me surprised, would have thought digital sales be closer to 50% than one quarter. I guess it did have quite a good retail package.

Bought The Witcher 1 late last year retail for about $10. Still playing it now, I'm very new to RPGs so it took me a little while to get into. Fantastic game, I'm glad they're getting good sales on both games and I look forward to buying The Witcher 2 later this year.

I don't consider 1.1 million to be great sales for The Witcher 2. It's a wonderful game and it should have sold 3 times as much. It's too bad the marketing for TW2 was ho-hum.. and not enough people like to play action-RPG games. It's all about the damn shooters.

Witcher 2 sales will be even better when they start some new deals and stuff.
