The Witcher Demo - First Impressions

Well well well...ol' Mr. Witcher. What a surprise this game is.

Now I'm not really big on RPGs but this is a pretty nice game from the short period I've played it! (About half an hour lol).

So far I like this a lot more than the State of Oblivion (which I used to be running for).

The cutscenes add nicely to an actual story and *gasp* you even know what to do in this!

Combat: Its a click fest again, but there is some actual timing involved as you wait for the flaming sword icon (some depth therefore) and it looks great! Best of all you can actually defeat your opponents in this unlike a certain other game where a mere Goblin can slaughter you.

It looks really nice too. The faces in this are far better than Oblivion even if the lip synching isn't that flash.

The game is cross between Diablo, Oblivion, uhh something with Sean Connery, oh and Shrek :D

So let me get this straight. Crysis on easy was rather difficult for you, yet you bested CoD4 on veteran apparently without a lot of trouble, yet you were beaten by a goblin in oblivion? I almost never use acronyms on the internet, but... WTF? If there's one thing Oblivion isn't criticized for, it's that it can be too hard.

I haven't touched The Witcher yet, not even the demo. I'm too busy playing and finishing other games.

Anyway, if it was shooting fireballs, I assume it was a Goblin Shaman. But even if I were to just start the game and fight one of those with my bare fists with the difficulty slider all the way up, I'd beat the pulp out of it. I'm just confounded as to how you got killed by one.

By the way, ranged spells are pretty easy to avoid. Just sidestep them, they don't home in or anything (enemies will advance their shots flawlessly if you're moving in a certain direction when they fire arrows or spells, in which case you just strafe in the other direction). Electric spells move faster and are a little harder to dodge, but it's still pretty easy.

I haven't touched The Witcher yet, not even the demo. I'm too busy playing and finishing other games.

Seriously, Sins of a Solar Empire comes out, and I haven't even finished a single game I bought last year, and then Soulstorm is coming like, a week later. I'm foolish for thinking I have time to finish these games.

EDIT: Oh and JP, run Oblivion again, go to options, turn that "difficulty" bar all the way up, and a Goblin can do more than just "slaughter" you.

Oh so soon, you should be able to download it in about 12 hours if you have a pre-order from Stardock =D. But yeah I have downloaded the Witcher Demo, have yet to give a go though, been to busy.

Usually, yeah - but this time he was totally off (probably because he only played the tutorial and a few quests from the first chapter).

I have. I once saved my game right after I left the sewers, stripped down to nothing but a loincloth and bare hands, turned the difficulty all the way up, and tried to see how long I could last. I figured I'd die eventually, but I was just screwing around. I killed the three bandits by the ruins across the river, the slaughterfish in the river, and went running around the Imperial City island killing every dear, mudcrab, goblin, wolf, whatever. By the time I was done, I still had almost half my health left. It's really rather easy to avoid getting hit most of the time, you just have to know how to dart in and out and punch at the right moments.

Granted, if you're talking about like Goblin Berserkers and such, then yeah, they'd kick the crap out of you at level 1, but I don't think you could find any that weren't quest-specific. By the way, I meant full difficulty in the base game, not with any mods like OOO where most enemies are unbeatable at level 1.

He doesn't bash every game, he bashes what he sees as the negative aspects of every game. There are several games he's reviewed that he at least said were "just good."

As for his text adventures, the text isn't usually very drawn out in his games. The dialogue in them is short and simple, yet intelligent and oh-so-entertaining just like his reviews.

I tried the multiplayer out last night ! It was so cool! I killed 10 people! And I like how you can unlock new features, some incentive finally!

BTW, everyone says Bioshocks story is awesome but it really, really sucks, just telling you in advance before you get dissapointed cuz they hype says otherwise.

-oh and haven't you already played System Shock 2? It's almost pointless to play Bioshock if you've already got that game.

I would get both if you can. But if I could only have one of the two, I would get The Witcher. More replayability.

Yeah but now he's sold out and is supposed to hate everything, and also, even if he hasn't sold out and is simply showing the signs of selling out (half-assed forced reviews with cheap laughs just to shut everyone up.) that Witcher review is pretty much the worst of the worst, I mean, he compared it to an MMORPG, clearly shows how much of the game he's played. Only valid point he makes is how pointless the sex is. (and the PC gamer master race :P) - he also hates RPGs more then any other genre, so linking a ZP review of an RPG is very pointless. Heck he took very stupid and forgivable flaws and just flaunted them in your face. Like the ammount of menus. - or the fetch quests (every RPG has fetch quests, but this game has the least, and almost every single one is 100% optional, no need to complete them unless you need cash.)

Everything before SMG is pretty much the only credible stuff he's got, if you take him seriously that is. Silent Hill Origins and RE Umbrella chronicles were decent though.

They don't have to, but it's the most hyped RPG to hit the PC in a long time. It doesn't help that the game got rave reviews, and is "hit and miss" with fellow PC gamers. It's popular, bottom line.

Just any game that has insane graphics in 2008 will be compared to..... you know... Crysis.
