This game looks pretty interesting. How is the gameplay and story?

The Witcher is one of the best games this gen imo.
I wont say its the best but its in my top 5 best games this gen forsure.
Any rpg fan should buy it, and even people who are not big rpg fans should give it a try imo.
Great story, TONS of quests, mature theme, fun combat and good atmosphere.

its an awesome game ^^
the story is pretty standard fantasy, but a whole lot darker, with a hint of "Frankensteins monster" added in. At times it can be a tad childish (sex cards anyone?) and it seems that some people just doessnt get the humor in the game (very bleak, dark humor).
And it has alot of connections to problems we face in todays society.
At times the story can be a bit odd, that is largely becauseyou often get sideswiped by other overlapping stories, it isnice, gives a change of pace. It is a nice touch that you as the player, knows nothing more then Geralt, so the magical "I know how this is going to turn out" that alot of RPGs offer players is not present here (unless you play through multible times.
The quests are amuzing (apart from the optional kill x amount of monsters) and quite diverse. Some are awesome, some are funny, some makes you think, and others again make you kind of sad.
The controls are very much like nwn 1+2 but the combat is somewhat timingbased, and needs a few mins getting used to.
IPrefer the kb+mouse setup (there is an option for mouse only but, it lacks alot of the optional controles like manual dodge)
Overall I think it is perhaps the best RPG since VTMB,and it is really nice to have an apg that doessnt remind me of a really cheesy fairytale (nwn2)
For me everything in The Witcher started off great. The into was fantastic and the battle mechanics where interesting. However my impression of the game diminished over time.
Colour. First thing i released was the lack of colour. Levels are grey and poorly lighten. I found Stalker to be the same really, in the sense that the atmosphere was there but it was still lacking proper art direction. I understand that the setting of it and the use of greys and dull colours as a backdrop to the Gothic setting but still....
Sex with women. Who would imagine something so interesting would become so boring when incorporated into a game. Cards? Hu?
Sound/Dialouge. This one killed it for me.
Personally I'm not too keen on voice work in games. True when done well it can add something to the game however I have always been a fan of reading. One of the most immerse RPG's I have played is Bailders Gate 2. The NPC scripts in that are still in my books the best to date- more so if you get the mods.
The voice work in this game though is awful. Flat and 'foreign', just like Stalker. The dialogues play out like KOTOR, oblivion, NWN etc but I never felt like I was talking to anyone just strolling through sound files.
I got about 15 hours in before quiting in the end so maybe I'm not being fair on the game, or maybe I'm just not in sync with other hardcore RPG gamers out there. In fairness I did find myself enjoying Mass Effect so maybe my oppinion is invalid lol.
Im not trying to flame just offering oppinions.
Not since the first few patches, on my rig at least. It's fantastic, but it does suffer from technical issues

The combat ruined it for me...it feels like a a ARPG click fest infused with what is referred to on the consoles as quick time events. I dunno...after the 20th battle I couldn't stand it anymore. With that said, the game seemed like a good RPG and I completely understand why so many people heap praise on it.dnuggs40The battle system seems shallow at first, but as the game progresses and certain encounters force you to use multiple styles and different magic strategies, it actually becomes surprisingly deep.
