For those who played the game ...

That really depends on what you like. So far I can tell you that the Witcher looks beautiful; has an okay combat mechanic; has extremely limited character development (think dark messiah and the like); has okay voicework and dialogue; has a lot of quests, most of which are interesting.
It's extremely linear in terms of location progression- you go to one area, a town or whatever, and you do all the things in that area, then you move on. And so on. It's abso-defi-lutely-nitly not a free-roam game. Course, that's because we get to impact the game's events in our very own choose-your-own-adventure type thing, and I think it's a worthwhile tradeoff. It also means that you don't have to run back and forth over great distances to complete quests that may yield minor rewards, which isgood thing. You can turn the page and know that everything you've done is now behind you.
All the gameplay mechanics are sound, and it looks beautiful. If you enjoy rpgs, you have every reason to get the witcher. But note, the game has limited character development. Geralt's 'class' is already pre-determined. You can alter his development somewhat, but who - and what - he is, is already set out. Similarly with items, little changes.
That said, this is so far the second best RPG i've ever played, after bloodlines. And i'm not even a quarter into the supposed 80 hours the game has to offer. So who knows what i'll think by the end of the week.
I want it, but only if I can get the European version. I live in California so thats tough, but fortunately a friend of mine works for an exporter so he makes lot of trips to Europe. I gave him 50 bucks and told him to bring me back a copy, along with some Absinthe
I know I problably sound like a perv who wants the game for the sex, but I just feel that one person can make a difference and I refuse to buy a game that was not presented to its audienceas intended.
I would buy it now probably if you are interested in it... although you may want to wait a while until more patches come out. It still seems like the camera and load times need a fix. Current patch doesn't fix that... but I hope they do soon. Till CVthan I'm gonna stop playing this game.Old_Gooseberry
Camera control is fantastic for me and the load times are nothing to cry about. If you suffer them, upgrade or accept the fact that seamless zones are not a must for a game. Also, dont quote your experience like its as if its everyones experience.Thats annoying.
Its currently my favorite rpg. It's alot better then I expected it to play and so far the story is awesome. I havent been this into an rpg for awhile.
You should totally pick this game up. Its awesome.
Yes, I agree with etype. My Pc loads The Witcher faster than it does Dark Messiah and Neverwinter Nights 2 and the like. So I don't know what you're complaining about, unless you really need a hardware upgrade... I've been playing it for +- 10 hours now but have seen no traces of the many bugs people are complaining about either. I use the OTS (over the shoulder) view, and the only time the camera is buggy or a bit slow is when you pause the game. Further is The Witcher a great buy for any Rpg fan, it has beautiful graphics, a great story line (so far I've played), you really get to know Geralt as you regain his memory with him which only compels you to play further. But the most important thing, the quests are FUN, unlike the quests you find in so many rpgs today which only makes you feel like "go there, do this, fetch that".
This isa highly addictive Rpg, although not for everyone (yes, we all have different tastes). But if you enjoyed Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fable, Divine Divinity and the like, THIS GAME IS A MUST HAVE.
I am playing the game and am around the 4th chapter in it and I have mixed opinions. The game is very well done and all that, I like the combat and making potions, and there are tons of quests to do. Unfortunately, for me at least, the load times area HUGE pain.
The load times are very troublesome in chapter 2 and 3, as these take place in a city where you are going in and out of buildings. Going into a building takes me 20-30 seconds to load. Leavinga building takes 1minute-2minutes to load. My computer is decent and I did not expect load times to be this large. I definately spent more time looking at a loading screen than playing during chapter 2 and 3. This is releaved in the bigger areas that contain monsters, like the 1st chapter, and the swamps in the 2nd and 3rd chapter as you dont have to go in/out of places that often. The load times in this game were 2x as long as Oblivion's and occured7 times as often.
Normally when I play RPG's like these I like to explore every nook and cranny to make sure I dont miss anything. ie. go in every doorand explore every area. I found that I cannot go into every area in the game, well I can, just I dont want to as the chances are I will go in and waste 2minutes at loading screens for a strawberry and5 gold.
This game would really have benefited from a slightly more seamless world. If it had less loading times, it would be a very amazing game.
I beat it on thursday, its a great game. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a solid action rpg with a good story.
The game made me very interested in the books, I can't wait until they are released in english next year.

Don't get your hopes up too much, I read The Last Wish - it's pretty bad, really. I presume it's the translation, but there's a lot of broken english and outright gibberish. And, while the story covers many dark and adult themes, they're almost all laced with a pseudo-fairytale vibe that really cheapens all of it.At times, it even falls into parody, but not in a funny or particularly enjoyable way.
That said, I am looking forward to the rest of the English translations, too, if only for more background on a game I am utterly loving. But if you read fantasy a lot and have read stuff like Leiber, Vance, Tolkien, Erikson and Martin and etc, you will probably come away from Sapowski's writing very unimpressed, especially after The Witcher, which has very decent english dialogue, for the most part.
Since we don't get RPGs like Fallout and Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines very often, this is a must buy. If you fancy oblivion sandbox type of games, this is probably not for you, then again everyone is different.dykunas
This sentence doesn't make much sense... So if I like Oblivion, I shouldn't buy this game? I would reword that sentence if I were you. I got the European version of The Witcher and I will say, that hands down, this is one of the best RPG's I have ever played in a long, long time. As soon as I started I couldn't stop playing it...

He means that oblivion is very open ended and witcher is the absolute opposite of that.
I recomment it... it is a very good, very story driven game.
Id say that the fact that you can not choose your own character, might scare someone off, but atleast it is one badass role you get handed to you ^^

Real RPG players love both types :D
You can get the uncensored version at GoGamer.com.-wildflower-
Yeah, that's where I'm buying it from. Some UK sellers are also offering the game on Ebay, but they're screwing people with the shipping costs...19.99 BGP, which equates to about 40 USD. $40 for shipping. No.

I am upgrading in March 2008 roughly, so thats why i'm holding off... but load times are way too long, I have a 10,000 rpm raptor and they still take long. Current patch doesnt fix load times, I didnt quote anyone kid.
Bought The Witcher today, how the hell did this get missed by most of the major game review sites? Theres a few bugs in there but the storyline is fantastic, its adult theme makes a really nice change. The combat system isn't to exciting but in fairness it does save on constant mouse clicking!
Ive yet to really get into the full depth of the game but from what little ive seen so far im going to love it!
The Witcher is freaking sweet. I am only 30 minutes into Act I and loving in. The combat is satisfying (coup de grace moves rule!) and the story is one of the best told.
Voiceacting is extremely well done, even better than the KOTOR series, which I thought were some of the best.
Folks, this is a real RPG....it has a story, it has cut scenes, and it has lots of character interaction. Dont expect Fable or Oblivion or anything.
Load times are longer than usual, but not too terrible. If you could disable autosave it would cut the load time down by about 10 seconds.
Game is beautiful as well, very artistic and eery.
any game where you get pinup cards when you have sex with someone is a game worth getting.taylore2003
oh yes, that goes without saying. THats the whole reason I bought the game, everytthing else is just icing on the cake.
I hope I get a chance to sleep with Abigail, the witch. Morally bankrupt women are hot!
Or, as John Turturro says in Transformers "Criminals are HOT!"
Yep, this game is awesome. I'm just pissed now cause I wasn't aware there were a censored and un-censored versions. I want sex, violence, and vulgar language in my Witcher too! I'm tired of people telling me what I can and can't experience... I just don't think trading it in and buying the uncensored version online is worth the trouble and money.
