The Witcher has the better story (Bioware has pretty much been retelling the same story with the same characters over and over and over since BG2) but DA:O has much better combat, which is good because you'll be fighting A LOT. I really disliked combat in the Witcher and it was nearly enough to make me stop playing the game but I'm glad I stuck it out and finished.
It's a tough call and it really depends on what you think is more important, story or combat.
They're both magnificent but I think I do prefer Dragon Age. It isby far the more polished and complete product.
I enjoyed the stories in both games. Though I do think that Dragon Age's narrative is a lot easier to follow because of the regular updates. Its a classic story and though some think its cliche I just like how much attention is put into the history of the different areas and the politics that surrounds a lot of your actions. I also like the party aspects and the side characters. I think Morrigan is one of the great game characters.
The combat is also a lot deeper in DA, with more options and spells etc.The Witcher's combat is fun but a bit samey. You can beat the game without using the bombs or any of the other weapons besides your swords.
The near perfection of aspects like the interface and the trading system are great additions to DA.
I love The Witcher's universe and in some respects it is grittier and more lively than in DA. But it also has a number of missteps. I think the swamp areas are particularly irritating, with those plants that you can't destroy and getting caught on the geography etc.
There's a lot of tedious walking around too, whereas Dragon Age cuts down on this frequently because of the fast travel. I think the final areas of The Witcher, those ice dream regions go on far too long.
Most annoyingly, its also hampered by pesky issues like taking up to 5 minutes to open your save files, very poor optimisation etc. This was in the special edition as well. The version which was meant to be patched.
They're both great games - two of my favourites - but I would choose Dragon Age: Origins and I am looking forward to buying the expansion during the summer! If anyone wants to come over and play it just let me know!

Your going to love Awakenings bud! I was really surprised by how it turned out. I had a great time playing it.
The witcher, its a very diffirent rpg than most bioware titles that more or less do the same thing. I like the way the story evolves around the character rather than "saving the world" and being good or evil. Also it has better graphics, level design and combat.dakan45I don't agree that the choices in Dragon Age - at least the ones I remember - are purely good or evil

I read Awakenings was good but very short for a full on expansion pack. Any truth to that? I have been waiting for the price to drop to below 20 bucks before I buy so far. Have not found it below 27 so far.I read Awakenings was good but very short for a full on expansion pack. Any truth to that? I'm pretty sure the Gamespot review had it clock it at 20 hours - and you can go back for the choices!

I am leaning toward raising the price I will pay for it. I loved Origins just was holding off for a cheaper price. 20 hours is not bad for 27 dollars though as long as the game play is as good as the initial game.[QUOTE="dakan45"]The witcher, its a very diffirent rpg than most bioware titles that more or less do the same thing. None of the choices in Dragon Age were inherently good or evil. Every choice was a means to an end: stopping the Blight. It's why I was glad that in DA: O the stupid bars from KotOR, Jade Empire and Mass Effect that gave you good/evil points were removed. It let you play however you like without considering a specific path or anything like that to take.
The Witcher is one of the next games I intend on buying. I just finished Dragon Age: Origins myself and I love it, but The Witcher is a game I've wanted for a long and with the sequel coming out soon now would be a good time to go for that Enhanced Edition they have available for me. Then again, I could just go for Awakening and get more Dragon Age. Tough choice, but I'm in no rush right now. :D
The Witcher is much better from a story and choice standpoint (more moral ambiguity; Dragon Age may not shunt its choices into "good" or "evil", but it's much much easier to differentiate the more favourable outcomes from the less favourable outcomes, and the only ethically complex situation in the entire game was the choice between Bhelen and Harrowmont, which may be due to the fact that there is no ideal third path for it unlike with almost all the other moral problems) but worse from a polish and combat standpoint. I'm of the opinion that the former two traits are more important to an RPG, so The Witcher wins this match.
I greatly prefer The Witcher, since it has a much better story, a far more interesting setting, more engaging combat (although that's debatable) and significantly better roleplaying.
In contrast, I didn't think much of Dragon Age. It didn't do anything that other dungeon crawlers hadn't done better, there wasn't much of a story, it was far too long and dull, and the side-characters' stories were literally the only reason I kept playing. It was a solid RPG, but definitely nothing special imo.

PlaneforgerTo be fair, that's all debatable. I much prefer the story and setting of Dragon Age, for example. But I respect your opinion.

Ugh, srsly. I felt like I spent half of the game running back and forth in the Witcher. It really became distracting and tedious and took away from the story and the overall experience.
Dragon Age + Awakening imo.

I have both and like both, but I've been running DA:O more because of the DLCs.
Currently I'm running the Golems of Amgarrak - great addition to the game.
I would say The witcher.
For starters I really loved the combat, and I adored the characters.
The true reason in that game however in that game, is the world, and how everything is part of it, it is not like DA:O where the world often just felt like a setting to do your fighting, and help the story along. The small things just maked the witchers so much more interresting, like how you acturally had to read books to learn, and how mythology was so heavily ingrained.
I also Liked how the witcher could change pace so easily, from combat to social, to beautiful scenery, to lonely rainy nights at a campfire while people tryied to ignore you. Unlike in DA:O where there was fighting - story sequence - fighting - light puzzle solving - fighting.
All those little touches just made the witcher stand out to me. And how they made the player feel the same disconnect as the player does? that is a move I respect, because it will likely not go well with all people, how Geralt is not wanted, nor fits into the world, there is no real place for him, a relic of the past, unwanted and shunned.
I hope they can make the world just as good in The Witcher 2, but I doubt it :(
Not that I disliked DA:O but it often felt hollow, and the easoning for doing what you did, always revolved around: "save the world", instead of "this is the world, what do you think is right and fair?" So DA:O ended up feeling somehow "wrong" which came to a surprise to me, because I will always Judge DA:O against BG2, since it is the game it was supposed to be a spirital sucessor to, but in BG2, you also could wander around the world, and off the beaten path, and make dicicions that was not the "save the world today" thing.
I loved both of them and each had its perks. The Witcher seemed to have a much more complex and enjoyable story while DA: O had more satisfying combat and a fun party system where you had to use each character differently and you could actually talk to your party members.
I would say The witcher.

This.
And it didn't feature anything as annoying as the Deep Roads or the Generic Forest. Dragon Age: quantity over quality.
