I wonder if anyone has some good advice for a gaming laptop. I found some online, but the good ones were all extremely heavy.

I travel a lot and want something I can carry, not drag, meaning 3kg or less... 15" is fine as long as the resolution is high.

Today I have a Samsung X65, with 512mb geforce 8600GS. Packs quite some power at only 2.4kg, but I found the 3D card to be too slow for the top games today.

If you want the absolute performance crown, you'll have to get the XPS M1730. However, this laptop is ridiculously expensive and pretty hefty. Also, if you want power, you'll have to get a heavy laptop.

well you could get one with a 8600gt which will be a bit better but if you want a fast gaming laptop then is off to 17" land and 5cm thick jobs

Without looking at any actual price numbers it can be safely assumed that all Dell AND Alienware (and every other company but for a few) is overpriced.

not really, i bought an xps 1530 for $1100 with a 8600m gt card, 2gb ram and a c2d processor. not a bad deal at all. and the xps 1530 is a nice laptop.

btw, i read that the xps 1730 weighs 14 pounds!!!! that's almost 3x the weight of an xps 1530 which weighs a little above 5lbs. a 14lbs laptop, that's crazy. and i though 6.5lbs was bad.

The keywords in your question is "a while back". :)

I typically upgrade my laptop at least once a year as unfortunately there is no way to upgrade only a single component, like the 3D card, and I am done with desktops.

Actually my current laptop is very powerful and only 2.4kg. The only thing I really need to upgrade on it is the 3D card. A 8600gs/512 is just not enough for todays best games... I do not think a 3D card upgrade would add that much weight though, just need a laptop manufacturer copy the samsung design more or less and add a more recent 3D card in it.

But, unfortunately seems like my current one might be the top of the line in its weightclass... :(
