Well i am sure nobody pulled a bigger one than me 5 years ago when i was just 14 i bought a gaming PC.Well atleast i thought it was one.

P4 1.6Ghz

256MB Ram

128 MB of integrated graphics.:lol::?:cry:

And guess what i thought this was an end of the world PC cuz it was a PENTIUM 4.I got home and installed a game and cranked the graphics to maximum and then got a heartattack looking at the slideshow. And then worse there was no AGP slot in the mobo either.I was totally screwed having burned all my fathers money into a piss poor PC.I still cannot forget that day.

A bit over 2 years ago I didn't know much about hardware and I was going to get my first "Gaming PC". I kept looking for 256mb graphics and saw those ... ATI Xpress 300 256mb cards and then saw cards like 7800gtx ... both 256mb but like WORLDS apart in price. And I remember thinking... who would pay so much for a 7800 when they could just get these other cheap 256mb cards?

Lol I almost both those things but then I just ended up showing my friend (who builds computers) my setup and he explained how 256mb only means nothing. Ah... thank god I told him... lol.

I feel sorry for you guys.

This last purchase was the first large computer purchace that I have ever made. I could have spent an extra $40 for a E6550 rig instead of a 5000+ BE rig and an extra $60 for a HD 3850 instead of a OCed 7900GS (although I didn't get XP until after I ordered it). I cannot say I regret it though. I wanted to have some money for extras like a monitor. That extra $100 will go to a better cause. At 3.2GHz, it pleases me so much that I am glad I didn't spend the $100.

My grandpa is the one that should be posting here.

He bought a X2 3800+ for $210 instead of $115, and worst of all, he didn't even need that much power.

Even better, it wasn't until recently that I was able to convince him, a big accomplishment, that you can get better than a 1.6GHz P4 w/mobo and 512MB RAM for $200. He thought that P4 system was a great deal to. He might still be questioning me though. I spent only ~$250 for the core of my computer.

Ya it seems many people used to believe that VRAM is everything just like me.I blame the specs requirements for games which only state how much VRAM you need.

A year ago I barely knew anything about computers and I convinced my parents that this computer that costed like... 1100£ were awesome. ( It had 512 mb graphic card. w00t! ) but later I found out that the card. X1650LE actually sucks pretty much! :(

Another big mistake happened like two years ago..
I had a old computer and I wanted to upgrade the graphic card to the nvidia 6600 but after a while I couldn't play any game at all because the graphic became really messed up..
I'm not sure what caused it tho... As I still don't know so much I'm just gonna guess that it's the power supply's fault..
I sent the card back and got a new one but it still had the problem.. :(

hmm my worst mistake was probably to get a Voodoo 5500 instead of a Geforce 2 GTS.

My mobile software wont install. My monitor driver wont install.I downloaded the vista drivers from viewsonic.com but they wont install.

But right now i am really pissed that i cant play bioshock in DX10.And i fully blame vista for that. It's my only DX10 game for now but if it happens with any other game DX10 game that i have to play in XP then i'll just go nuts.I can actually play it in DX10 but with either no sound or 60hz refresh rate on my CRT monitor.:|

I don't think I have made any big mistakes when buying PC parts I always check with everyone on here before I buy so I can't really go wrong. but all of people did go wrong when buying 8800GTX cards and thinking they were crysis proof, luckily I waited till Crysis was released before deciding what card to get.

He gotta be the joystick and controller I bought, that I never ever used and ended up throwing away.

Or that time in the beginning when I bought a case that was too small for my motherboard. Haha.

Maybe a year of high-end gaming was worth for many people.

My absolute first computer. It was a PCChips motherboard with integrated graphics. Yes it was better than the older computers my dad had, but it was still junk. This was made back during AGP x1/x2 era. I got a PCI ATI AIW Rage 128 Pro with 32 MB, although it functioned at half power until I upgraded the motherboard to a Gigabyte mobo with the Intel 440bx chipset. That machine was the most stable computer I ever had. You can keep it on forever without a need to restart it, ever.

I still loved how the final modifications to that machine, 800 MHZ Pentium 3, outperformed this one person's boxed 1.8 GHz machine, Intel Celeron.

OK... It was around 3am, on a weekend, back in mid 2002. I stumbled (VERY...VERY) drunk into a local Walmart. My goal? Munchies. Somehow, I found myself staring into a locked glass case containing various computer components, many of which were of a dubious nature. I can't tell you all what they were exactly. There were letters and numbers on the packaging, but they could have been anything (eyes not wanting to work properly). Suddenly, I managed to focus on a single box. HP was on the outside, along with DVD+RW. An electronics assistant approached warily, as I must have looked somewhat off-putting...what with the leather jacket...boots with the spikes and chains...did I mention the mirrored aviators? At any rate, "Can I help you?" he asked, as I swayed slightly in place. I don't remember the exact details of the sale, but his look was one of concern and apprehension, when I asked him to open the case. Long story slightly shorter, I woke up the next day (afternoon) to find a brand new HP DVD+RW installed in my primary rig, just below the LG CD burner and above my DVDRom. The rig was all beige...except for the gray HP newcomer. Sitting on top on the mid-tower was a spindle of unwrapped DVD-R disks. Horror settled in comfortably beside my raging hangover... An HP box was beside my monitor. I picked it up and was greeted by a neon green price tag. $428.99. After I'd emptied my stomach's contents into the appropriate porcelain receptacle, I staggered back for a second, hopeful look. No, my eyes were in fact working. $428.99. Never did find the receipt... Well, that's my tale of PC parts purchasing woe. Hope you all had as much fun as I did. Stupid goin' to Walmart drunk... D'OH!!!

mine has to be this crap joystick where the throttle was seperate from it and the buttons that make the airplane turn were impossible to use, $50 down the drain. my brothers $20 joystick turned out to be so much better. Also my first computer build i went with intel p4 instead of amd. big mistake

Let me guess...you had something like the TM Afterburner or Saitek X-36/X-45, with a rocker on the throttle for the rudder instead of a twisty-stick. (Can't say I've actually used one of those in gameplay, since I went straight from cheap-twisty sticks to high-end HOTAS setups that require rudder pedals for proper rudder control!) Anyway, I don't think I've made any particularly bad purchases on PC hardware(might have paid too much for some things, and ordering that MSI 8800 GT from Dell may end up with me waiting virtually forever to truly complete my new gaming PC, but that's about it), though I do have friends and family that have made bad purchases: -Many years ago, my father built me a PC so that I wouldn't be hogging his. The motherboard? An AWFUL PCChips M598 POS that lacks an AGP slot and has the worst mobo layout I've ever encountered! (I have to run serial port cables over the top of a bunch of add-on cards to get to the mobo headers, for starters! And the CPU's HSF blocks the way for two of the three PCI slots, so I can't install any long graphics cards in all but one of them!) -More recently, back in 2003 or so, just after Christmas the preceding year, my stepfather bought an AGP graphics card to improve gaming performance in the family PC. An ATI Radeon 9600 XT 128 MB for 200 US$, to be specific. I wanted him to spend a bit more and get one of the Radeon 9700 cards, even if it meant me having to pay for part of the price and having no Half-Life 2 voucher, but that didn't happen. While the 9600 XT wasn't exactly a horrible card for its day(still a hell of a lot better than the awful GeForce FX series!), the 9700 series had more bang for the buck in my eyes. (Then again, now that I think about it, would this crappy Compaq's 200W PSU be overstressed just from adding a Radeon 9700?)

Spending money on fans with LEDs and cold cathode light tubes and buying a cheap case that looks like a kid thought of it (its very annoying and its falling apart). Also buying $20 madcatz gamepads for the PC that only lasted for 2 days before they got stuck going in certain direction or stuck holding buttons down. Buying an optical drive for Lightscribe (its not that bad, it just takes to long to print to be useful). Buying a Raptor 74gb hard drive (definitely the worst purchase since my $68 IDE Maxtor 7500rpm 200gb puts it to shame at loading levels in any game).

I bought and x1650pro thinking VRAM was all that mattered like other people in this thread. And I learned shortly after that it wasn't. And several years ago trying to play Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring on a really old computer (can't remember the specs) and and getting white charaters because the gfx card didn't support T&L
