That seems like a pretty nice budget. Personally I'd go with an Onkyo amp, probably a 605. It's fairly future ready, he does video switching if need be, and it's getting great reviews... All for a fairly reasonable price. I think you can find them for about $500. Speakers... you can spend a fortune on; some decent brands: kef, b&w, polk audio

The Onkyo is a good suggest with all it's new features.

There are also new internet direct speaker companies out there that are usually highly rated for making a product only sold online, no advertising, dealers, ect, so they can sell it for price that would have cost a lot more in a store for the same product.

For budget, I might suggest the newer budget speakers from AV123:
http://www.av123.com/products_category_brand.php?section=speakers&brand=55

Maybe the two pairs of the bookshelfs, and one center. I think they have a nice risk free offer with the bookshelfs. So maybe two pairs of the bookshelfs, and one center, that's $577 and whatever shipping might be. Then

Then the Onkyo 605 is $399, no tax, $32 shipping at Onecall.com, Silver is instock. What's nice about the 605 is it supports all the newer audio format and lossless decoding over HDMI for the new Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies.

Then what you need is a decent subwoofer. Something around $400-$500

This one is not half bad from user opinions for being a budget store subwoofer at $469 (just don't get any other version of Klipsh subwoofer as they were rated bad until this one, unless you look at the higher end ones with the copper look):

I think Best Buy has had it cheaper than that in the past. I got one for $299 openbox (but they gave me 2 bad ones in a row with a day lost in testing thinking it was my setup)

If you pay more, look into the SVS subs, they have a great $799 sale on the PB12-Plus, or get one of their $599 cylinder (tall) subs:

Don't forget costs like decent speaker wire and such.

+2 on the Onkyo 605.

+1 on internet direct speakers such as av123.

TimothyB, if you were going to go "budget" on a sub for $500 why not go with the Hsu VTF-2 MK 3 (I'm probably going to pick this up soon myself). Also, while that is a great price on the PB 12-Plus, I'd also seriously consider the Hsu VTF-3 MK 3 or the VTF-3 HO. They score better than the PB12 line on craigsub's rankings (obviously that's subjective but his rankings are highly regarded, as I'm sure you're aware).

I just couldn't remember all the subs out there and I do recall hearing the HSU name just as much, just forgot. I'm sure any sub is good, but now that you point out an HSU for $499 with a 12inch woofer, doesn't look like you could go wrong. I haven't been researching for some time so I'm a bit rusty. I had ended up with an AV123 UFW-12 b-stock I think for $499, and that included the r-des equalizer box, a screaming deal as most the time the bstock now doesn't include that at $599, but only full $1100 price.
