Just downloaded Thief. Am enjoying it, but the map is completely useless, as it doesn't show where my guy is. Since the game is so non-linear, is there a way to mark on the map where I am? I can't believe they'd be so stupid as to provide a map and not show where your guy is on it.

Unfortunatly you cant, the best thing to do is find on the landmarks noted on the map and use it as referance point. It gets worse with the cavern and cave missions, but you kind of learn to find your way. Getting lost just means a chance of finding loot so make the best of it :P

It isn't stupid, he's a real life thief that drew the map, drawn maps don't tell you where you are, you have to use your sense of direction and brain to figure it out.

Appreciate the fact that the game isn't insulting your intelligence.

If he drew the map, then he should also be able to mark on it for reference if it's not shown where he and what direction he's pointing. It's relegated to almost useless the way it is, and is an oversight on the developer's part.

Doesn't the map have colour coding on it for areas that you've been to? Its meant to be more realistic. God forbid the day a Thief game has an auto arrow telling you where to go.

I remember there being a heap of missions where Garrett doesn't have a map of the area, or his map is compiled from outdated sketches, things like that. The point being that his knowledge of the area is sketchy at best, and the ambiguous map reflects that well. Scouting is your friend, and at the very least, I think the game marks off rooms you have been in (unless that was in Thief 2?).

TS, the way the game is designed for you to explore every room and case everything. Take your time and explore one level at a time, the map is somewhat confusing but I remember the room or level you are in lights up to where you are. Get used to it and you'll realize there is no other game like it

Most of missions do have an "automap" which highlight where you currently are and shade where you have been. A couple of others do not and are intended to be vague, like the Lost City (it's lost, get it?)

I actually love the sketchiness of the maps. It doesn't rely on handholding like "modern" games today where they show you the exact location of all your objectives and locations of enemies. But it stills serves a general purpose of getting you to right general area in conjunction with your compass. Although the suggestion to allow you to mark things on you map is not a bad one. Thief does have a Notes section where you can enter your own notes, it is accessed from the map screen.

Unfortunately, Eidos Montreal has never been very good when it comes to hyping and building public interest in their games in development, so very little has been officially revealed even though they are well two years into development. Here is where all the rumours and speculation can be found, where all the hardcore Thief fans hang out:

Are you talking about the very first Thief Game or Thief Deadly Shadows which I got from Steam?

If it's the first, is it free to download now like Bethesda has done with Arena & Daggerfall? And will I need Dosbox for it too?

Sorry if that sounds nooblike, really haven't been into the Thief Series much but Deadly Shadows was something I really liked so I wouldn't mind more of it.

Yea I picked it up for $10 on GoG, Gold version. It's a great game and holds up very well. I must say the sound design is extremely well done and oftentimes hilarious. But I do disagree that having a more detailed or useful map is handholding. A map IS handholding by its very nature. Alright, I'm fine with it not pointing to the goal or showing which way I'm facing (though this could easily been a substitute for the compass and nothing more), but here's my main issue:

This game is old. As such, its visuals are very rudimentary and textures constantly repeated, and most are not unique in their own right which makes it sometimes very hard to distinguish one area from another. It would be hard to navigate an unfamiliar area like this in RL, even with a map which allows markings on it. I can appreciate that they were going for realism, but the game's tech and presentation are simply not up to the task for how the map is supposed to be utilized. The architecture is blocky, and the textures and items are reused over and over.

I'd have no problem if I could draw on it or he filled in areas as he explored. Maybe a mod? Anyone know? But when it's just a basic drawing of a world that is itself very basic in its visual design, attempting to ascertain visual points and then reference them to the map becomes difficult to the point of almost becoming useless. I'm still having a lot of fun with this game, but am finding myself remembering the levels instead of utilizing the map which seems like a missed opportunity.
