Yea I picked it up for $10 on GoG, Gold version. It's a great game and holds up very well. I must say the sound design is extremely well done and oftentimes hilarious. But I do disagree that having a more detailed or useful map is handholding. A map IS handholding by its very nature. Alright, I'm fine with it not pointing to the goal or showing which way I'm facing (though this could easily been a substitute for the compass and nothing more), but here's my main issue:
This game is old. As such, its visuals are very rudimentary and textures constantly repeated, and most are not unique in their own right which makes it sometimes very hard to distinguish one area from another. It would be hard to navigate an unfamiliar area like this in RL, even with a map which allows markings on it. I can appreciate that they were going for realism, but the game's tech and presentation are simply not up to the task for how the map is supposed to be utilized. The architecture is blocky, and the textures and items are reused over and over.
I'd have no problem if I could draw on it or he filled in areas as he explored. Maybe a mod? Anyone know? But when it's just a basic drawing of a world that is itself very basic in its visual design, attempting to ascertain visual points and then reference them to the map becomes difficult to the point of almost becoming useless. I'm still having a lot of fun with this game, but am finding myself remembering the levels instead of utilizing the map which seems like a missed opportunity.
