Ubisoft probably won't release the dev kit, so it might be hard to make a total conversion for it.
Also, the people making it would have to fix the dead-stupid AI, and implement an entirely new stealth system (since Assassins Creed doesn't use light/shadows or noise for its stealth, apparently).
Although I have yet to play AC i have read several reviews that each criticise it for having a good structure and engine but failed to make the most of it, and have all the tools in place to make a sequel. If this is true then I can't see them releasing the tools for a full conversion as they will want you to buy the sequel.
That said I would also love to see a good Thief 4 :)
Seriously. I was thinking this EXACT same thing from almost the second I started playing AC. I mean, I've been blabbering on to all my friends that this game just SCREAMS for a new thief game to be born from it, they all just dismiss it, mainly because they've never played any of the thief games. but OH MY GOD its the perfect engine. add the blackjack, a nighttime setting, and indoor areas with lots of loot to steal, and you have yourself one of the best games of all time in the making. I've heard that Looking Glass Studio, the ones who made Thief, have gone out of business, which definitely sucks, and Eidos is the company who picked it up. They either need to hand the rights over to Ubisoft, or Ubisoft needs to hand over the AC engine, because any new thief game coming out without the AC engine just wont feel right. AC IS Thief. it has to be.
