allow me to break it down fer ya, mate.
story -- if this is the thing you're most concerned about, then you won't be disappointed. V:tMB has a deeply engrossing storyline, through which you get to experience some of the most unique characters and places in the genre. granted, when you look at it hard enough it's still the basic power struggle plot, and it is indeed quite linear to be honest, but it's still easily one of the best. unless for some reason you find the whole vampire theme revolting.
roleplaying -- coming from Troika, you can rest assured that there's open and deep roleplaying to be found in this game. depending on your character skills, you are allowed to tackle most situations in various ways. dialogues play a CRUCIAL part throughout the game, and good news, they are superbly written and voiced. i would go as far as saying that the game has the best voice acting in the genre.
combat -- the weakest link in an otherwise perfect game. ranged combat is quite useless, while the melee combat is so over-powered there's no reason not to go that way. indeed, if you resort to brute force throughout the game, V:tMB would be a very easy, and somewhat dissatisfying, experience. each bloodline ( ie race ) has its own set of traits, and there's no way to branch out -- while this contributes to the roleplaying element, it does feel kinda limiting.
stability -- patch it up to v5.5 and the game would be silky smooth. i'm not saying there would be zero problem, since situation varies from rig to rig, but i think with the latest unofficial patch chances are good that you won't be having any problem. oh, the unofficial patches ( 2.3 and above, i think ) also recovered the History system that was dropped in the final release version.
so, yea, get it, mate. it's a great game that every serious rpg lover has no reason to miss. :)
