So I just graduated yesterday, and there was much rejoicing. So in a little over 2 months I'm on my way to college, which means I can finally take advantage of some student discounts! YAY! So for these past two years I've been using a Toshiba Satellite L645D. It can run Left 4 Dead on low, for gaming, its weaker than I hoped it would be. I got it for about $420 in September of 2010, and it has treated me very well, I've absolutely loved everything about it except the battery, which is lasting about an hour now just web browsing and the like :P. So the specs for my current baby are 4GB of RAM,AMD Turion? II Dual-Core Mobile Processor P520, and anATI Mobility Radeon? HD 4250 graphics card. So considering how two years have passed, I'm looking for a substantial upgrade and I want to take advantage of some student discounts.

So after receiving some $$ from my family for graduating and some scholarships, I want to blow some money on a computer. My antivirus just expired, I'm getting notifications for my laptop battery and what not, so I figure now would be a good time to upgrade, although I could wait until August if there are some major benefits to doing so.

But today I ran across this:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-Pavilion/A3F49AV?HP-Pavilion-dv6t-7000-Quad-Edition-Entertainment-Notebook-PC

A coupon and a discount let me pick up this monster for $877!

i7 core CPU

NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GT 630M Graphics with 1GB GDDR3 memory [HDMI, VGA] (I believe this is the cheapest card, its customizable)

8GB DDR3 RAM

15.6-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1366x768)

750GB HDD

6 hour battery life

WOW!

So now I'm wondering, I understand computer specifications to a limited degree, what I don't understand is if something is going to get bottlenecked or if something else is genuinely wrong with this laptop. I found this laptop off of a review, and he mentioned that it was worth the extra $150 to upgrade to a 1080p screen, which is quite frankly too much over my budget (My budget was 800, 1000 is too much). So what do you guys think? Should I buy this one as soon as I can, should I wait until the end of the summer for any reason, or should I keep looking? If so, is there anything I should really be looking out for, like a 1080p screen or a certain type of card?

Not impressed? Anything to recommend, because I don't want to go over $900, I'm already over budget.

Well I don't have anything to recommend really but somebody else will. All I want to say is don't pay for Antivirus. Use Avira just as good.

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np6165-clevo-w150er-p-4344.html This is from the website I got my laptop from. If you upgrade the CPU to an i7 you get everything you get with the HP for around $930, plus you get a 1080p screen as opposed to 768p and you also get the GT650M instead of 630M so that's about 2x as powerful.

Lord why do I keep geting this kind of lip. I'm going to college next year, my laptop is slowly dying. I'd like something that I can game on, but I need a laptop anyway. So rather spend $500 on a laptop and $500 on a desktop, I'm shooting for $900 that could do the best of both. I don't see the irrational?

Opt for a better card and a better screen. You can get the SAME model for $937.99 *PLUS* the 1920x1080 screen and the faster and larger GT 650M with this coupon code - NBG5247 - from logicbuy.com directly from HP.com.

There are plenty of good gaming laptops out there. With the DV6T gaming is fine if he slightly upgrades his specs.

I wouldn't, not with that GPU.

It's a rebadged GT 540m iirc.

If he upgrades and gets the GT 650m 2gig he should be pretty good at running most contemporary titles with medium and even high settings. He may not crank Max Payne 3, but he'll be able to run titles like MW3 and Battlefield 3 with high settings and still hit over 30 FPS average, I think.

i5 is dual core i7 is quad core, not to mention each core in the i7 is more powerful than each core in the i5 so you should see more than double CPU power for just $70 more. If you really can't afford it then the i5 should be okay but it's much better value with the i7, and it will improve much more than just gaming performance but all round speed of the laptop would be much better.

BF3 on high would be pushing it at 1080p, I'd say medium, which still looks fantastic and better than the console by a long way.

Thank you very much. I'm going to save the Sagar link for a little while until I get my hands on a little more money I think, but that one looks phenominal!
