Yes you can play gothic 3 without playing gothic 2. Well you character arrives at an island with some friends that take seperate ways. Gothic 2 however...its a good idea to play the first one before you paly gothic 2. Gothic 3 gameplay puts you in a big map and asks you to find some items, then you have to search the entire map to find them. Thats it. No quest indicators in the map, no pointing of where to go next or where is the next quests and dialogues feel so simple. In few words gothic 3 feels storyless, with huge lack of storytelling or trying to interest the player and make him keep playing. So i found it pretty borring, let alone how frustrating the combat is. Either get Risen or two worlds if you want someting older.

Patched Gothic 3 >>>>> Two Worlds

But yeah Risen is basically the new Gothic, it's made by the same people.

I started with Gothic 2 and had no problems with the story (although the three games continue eachother's plots). Whenever you meet a character you're supposed to know, you get the option to tell them that you can't remember who they are, so that'll fill in some blanks. Also, the third game isn't storyless, it's jsut that the story isn't spoonfed to you. You'll disover bits of the plot as you move from town to town, and each town has its own 'story'.

Yup gothic 3 is bits and pieces here and there while two worlds has all those bits and pieces linked up and provides a better character development and level up experiance than gothic 3. Plus better quests and i dare to say even better quality in the main story. Also it has been patched up even better than gothic 3

Dakan45: I like Gothic 3 and Two Worlds. I don't agree with you on very many things, but I agree with you on this post. Two Worlds is superior on the points you have pointed out. Also, I think the animations and music are much better in Two Worlds than Gothic 3. If you can forgive the bad English dialogue, the game is really an under-appreciated gem.

What can i say? Two worlds is a mix of diablo and oblivion for me, its about leveling up without having to relly on a combat system, exploration and quests are just bonus. Leveling up is where all the fun is at.
