Because I'm tired of my dvd/home theater thingie. Thoughts? Something better for a similar price? It's 550 right now... I was originally considering an onkyo 507... This is the right place for this sort of random question, yeah?

That's a great deal for that receiver. That's ~$700+ receiver. Must be coming out with a new one. I set up a dedicated theater room this summer for my cousin based around the Onkyo 807 which I found for $680 on a similar blow-out. That receiver has no problem driving a $2500 Monitor Audio speaker system. Onkyo's have very good amps and is probably my favorite mass-market brand after Denon/Marantz. What's great about Onkyo though is that you can find these killer deals once and a while whereas Denon/Marantz rarely are marked down too much. The 707 has ~745 watt power supply so it theoretically can put out a clean ~105 watts/channel/all channels driven - a little juice required for the electronics. What speakers you paring this with?

I'm just finally interested in better sound, so i'm moving my way up slowly... but i don't want to skimp on the receiver as I'm sure that's something I'll use for a long time, and I really didn't want to buy expensive expensive speakers before I decided it was worth it. In terms of sound. If you see what I'm saying.

Ugh. Nothing there warrants that level of Amp. You'd be better served by a lower end Onkyo and getting better speakers.

Why are you mixing speaker brands? That's one of the worst mistakes you can make. The Center Channel you chose is fine. Get yourself a complete klipsch set of speakers and the Onkyo 507.

Jandurin

About a couple thousand (at least) for a 5.1 set-up. I'd still recommend picking up the amp -- you're not paying a huge premium and it gives you plenty of overhead for future upgrades -- but you could definitely go with something cheaper if you'd rather save a couple hundred bucks or put the savings towards new speakers.

I've been looking at upgrading my HT as well from a Sony HtiB. I think I found the receiver i want (Denon AVR-789 not that its important) i understand its importanat that the 5 speakers match now, but how important is it that the speakers match the sub? Is it important at all if the speakers match the receiver?

The Sub doesn't really need to match, but I still like to stick with the same brand and build quality as the other speakers I have.

@Jandurin

The speakers are the most important part of any setup. Even a cheap $150 5.1 Amp will sound good with good speakers attached to it. What is your actual budget for the system you wish to build. Maybe then we can help you a little better.

I usually do NOT recommend the same sub that goes with a series. There are many good subs out there and you should get the best sub for the buck you can find. You also don't need to spend 1000's on speakers. There are many good speakers that cost less especially if you supplement them with a good sub. Some great speakers for the money include Paradigm, Def Tech, Atlantic, Energy, Monitor Audio, and a whole lot of others. To save money get a good sub and go with smaller speakers. The Energy Take 5 classic would be a good set of speakers (good not exceptional) that you could pick up with a sub for ~$600. They still will not show everything your amp offers, but it gets you into some good speakers.

those Energy speakers look nice, and they are actually $400 on amazon. the only major downside considering the price point is that (according to cnet) the energys aren't available in single or 2 packs, only 5, so if i wanted to expand to 7.1 (i just don't have the space right now) I wouldn't be able to get matching speakers. Im still going to be concidering these for my upgrade, thanks :)

If you were going to expand to 7.1, you really need a fairly large room and a different caliber of speakers to make a very noticeable difference. Most people are better served with a quality 5.1 setup than a cheaper 7.1 setup. I have a 13x20 foot theater with a 96" screen, Denon 3805 7.1 receiver, and a quality 5.1 RS series Monitor Audio setup and it is amazing. When I hooked up a pair of Paradigm Mini-Monitor 3's (very highly regarded monitor speakers for $350 pair) as my back 2 channels to test out 7.1, the difference did not warrant the cost of the speakers and I had no issues whatsoever spending more if I wanted to and my receiver supported it with no issues.

By the way, that is an excellent deal for those speakers with the 200 watt subwoofer included! That set up regularly sold for twice that not long ago.

The silly amp is 480 now >_> And I see there have been further responses since I walked away. The reason I mixed and matched was I was just playing around, as it were. It's not like any of that was particularly expensive.
