To put everything aside here are the numbers

So at 1080p it get's still 35 fps in crysis but only on gamer settings (so not enthousiast, which is the highest). This is also done with an i7 cpu (which btw makes a difference ). It's not so much the 768 mb that's your problem, it's the chipset , the gtx 460 is a good card even for gaming in 1080p just don't expect any miracles with high-end games.
If i was you i would only get a new monitor after you have bought a better card or go sli. Not that the monitor would be a bad buy but i think you wouldn't have much better quality. You would have higher resolution but you would have less detail. That seems like a bad trade-off if you're already gaming at 1440 x 900.
Still crysis warhead is big sandwich, far cry 2 for instance would run flawlessly at the highest settings on 1080p. You can always lower the resolution for the more 'demanding' games. That's up to you .
I have a similar system like yours only your gpu is a little bit better (i3 530/4gb ddr3/hd 5770 512 mb). My cpu is a little bit better though. I can run crysis almost at very high (i have to lower shadows and textures to high instead of very high) but on '1280 x 1024'. I play on a 4:3 17 inch and i still like it. I prefer smoother framerates and higher detail levels over bigger screens but that's just me. Not to mention that bigger screens will come with higher performance demand.
Your cpu you can keep , it won't bottleneck butI would sell that gtx 460 and get a least a hd 5850, hd 6870, gtx 560 or gtx 470 and then buy yourself a nice 1080p monitor. The hd 6950 or gtx 570 would even be better , it would futureproof you some more
