looks good but he wants 512mb card.Ice-Cube
Why so? As stated, a low-mid range card won't use the full 512MB (nor is there and extra performance boost with 512MB over 256MB) - haggle with him until he agrees to get a 256MB one...
Take 7900 or 8800 :)
Or for cheaper card, get some of ATI, maybe half the price, or more.
But NVidia I reccommend, for the technology that they have.Maybe ATI won't lose 5+frames on AA and AF, but NVidia Rule the Bloom/HDR. And 7900 and 8800 has the newest Pixel shading, and engines... You know the other :)
Ask him what res he is playing at. If it is above 1680 x 1050, then get the 512mb. If not, 256 is fine. And fyi a lot of graphics card manufacturers put 512mb on a crappy card so noobs think it is good, when it really sucks. See: noob bait.
Oh and also you can tell if a card is bad by the memory bit rate and type of memory. If the card is 64-bit or lower, it sucks. And if it has gddr, gddr2, ddr, ddr2, or ddr3, it sucks. The only good types of memory are gddr3 and gddr4. And you should never get a card where the amount of memory is more than double the bit rate. ex: 256-bit 512mb :-) but 128-bit 512mb :-(
Aright I appreciate the replys, looks like I may go with this one.

Ice-Cube
you could go for this aswell http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3244198&CatId=1826
Don't get a 512mb 128-bit card. The extra memory DOESN'T DO ANYTHING. He won't even get 1 more frame per second unless he's on a really high res, which the 2600xt can't handle anyway. The 2600xt is a good card, but don't waste money on a 512mb version.
Cards that use 512mb effectively: ati x1900 series, ati x1950 series, nvidia 7900 series, nvidia 7950 series, ati 2900xt, and I guess we'll throw in the nvidia 8800s since they have even more memory than that.

as the he said he wants 512mb and imo the 2600xt 512mb is the best mid range 512mb card and it's overclocked
Not at all. It's like duct taping a v8 engine to a tricycle, it just doesn't work. Instead, said tricycle will flip over and possibly explode, and no one wants to see a cute little kid get injured (unless it is an ugly kid, or your a sadist, but we'll ignore those possibilities).imrlybord7
AHAHA - that's one weird comparsion (comparison? metaphor? arhhh can't remember) - I can picture that kid on that tricycle now :D
But this ain't going to be the topic opener's card - it's for his friend, so I say just let the baby have his bottle and just give him the 512MB version if the friend is really really eager for a 512MB card...
I may go with 2600 xt or the one I previous said. He's not going to be using it for "just gaming", he just needs it for vista and possibly a few games.
He wants to pay 150 CAD bucks max with shipping in there too, he really doesn't want to head into the 200's.
if not i'll just tell him to get a 256mb card even though he has his eyes set on the 512s.

Good card, good price, comes with a free game.
Seriously dude there is no point getting a 512MB Card, unless its something like the X1950 or 7900GT or 8800GTS.
Take this card as an example. The 7300GT is a really lame card, and yet they stick 512MB RAM on the thing. There is no way it will ever be able to make use of that. Its probably only using 128MB of the RAM.
Putting 512MB on that card is just a con. And it works. Because less knowlegable people will go out and buy it thinking "wow it must be really good because it has 512 RAMs".

the 7300gt is not for gaming it's for movie playback etc just like other low end cards they have 512mb yes to fool people and for hd movie playback
people get caught up in the ram hype machine. I remmber when 256mb card first came out there was lots of talk in pc mags about how it was useless to most cards. the 6800/x800 was the first that could really use 256mb. it was really funny how just about every 6600gt had 128mb while the 6600gs had 256mb which it couldn't use while the gt could use some of it. 512mb is useless on anything below a 7900gs/x1950gtimprezawrx500
The X1800 series made good use of 512MB of VRAM, as did the 7800 series cards.
I went with the GeForce 8600GT 256mb Ram, he's not a gamer so he will make use of this card for Media. Note that it's for my friend, not myself.
I appreciate all the help you have given me, I got the card for about 120 bucks, $100 if I send in mail in rebate CAD.
There's really no need to argue here, a smart person would buy:
If on a tight bugdet: 7600GT
If on a moderate bugdet: X1950PRO
If on a great bugdet: 8800GTS 320MB
If on a crazy splurge: 8800GTX / HD 2900XT
If on a all out system: 8800ultra
Iv gone through all of the price ranges! I concider them all as the best bang for your buck graphics cards and reviewers love them.
NO! other card is even worth looking at since they might be on similar price range's but wouldn't give you the performance you nee/want.
2600XT and 8600GT / GTS are the most pathetic mid range cardsI have ever seen or delt with they are not worth the money.

The 7600GT is only $10 less than a 256MB HD2600XT GDDR3, and performs worse. And if your budget isn't adjustable by $10, don't build a computer.
The X1950GT is only $20 or so more than the 7600GT, and performs better than either the 7600GT or the HD2600XT.
Lastly, the 8800Ultra isn't worth the money - period. Even on an all-out system, You're better off water-cooling and overclocking your 8800GTX card.
