We reckon there's a good chance NVIDIA's next-generation GPU - codenamed Fermi - will be publicly unveiled in the coming weeks, but at least one U.S. retailer appears to have jumped the gun.

SabrePC is the retailer in question, and it has an XFX GeForce GTX 480 available for a massive $679.99.

There's little information on the card itself - and no product image, unfortunately - but SabrePC does reveal that the card will feature 2GB of GDDR5 memory. Knowing that NVIDIA's card features a 384-bit memory interface, we're going to go ahead and presume that the retailer is hinting at a massive 2,304MB frame buffer.

The suggested price and amount of GDDR5 memory has to be taken with a pinch of salt, but it certainly looks as though NVIDIA is gearing up to unveil its long-awaited range of GeForce 400-series products. Taking the company's latest teaser into consideration, Fermi could finally be revealed to the world at the Penny Arcade Expo this Friday in Boston.hexus

Not too bad. 5870's on release were pushing $600 as well (well pre-release was even higher). Probably we'll be seeing $400ish.

Over priced, not worth it with the 5850 already at sub $300 prices.

Um offcourse it will be overpriced a bit on release Thats how it always is. Ati did the exact same. Not including the 2 gig 5900 series of ati is the same price so think about that to.

That is expensive indeed... It's probably gonna drop alot tho when it actually releases.. Pre-ordering 40nm chips will be expensive indeed... Defenately if you look at the current availability of them XD. But yeah, With those prices they must be pretty confident to bring down the HD5970 in its price... Not sure how they're gonna do it tho... 2GB On a single GPU PCB sounds weird aswell..

Yeah but the 5850/5870 had no equal in the market. Nvidia will.

Expect the big daddy card and in months to follow release of mid class cards. Thats how nvidia has always done. Can't wait for the mid levels.

The card hasnt even come out yet . You don't know its performance . You may be right but i would say to wait until the card is released to see what it has to offer...imagine if it blows the 5970 out the competition 0.o

What I am saying is at $300 why get anything other than a 5850. Anything else is major overkill anyway. I understand if you're an enthusiast, but if not you're just wasting money.

What's sad is newegg.com had the 5850 priced at $265 and the 5870 at around $370 when I first saw them advertised. That's probably why I couldn't find any and had to settle for a 5770. Then when I saw the current prices, I decided to stick with what I have now.

That price probably isn't accurate because it isn't legit.

What I find interesting is that the GTX 470 may be priced at $300.

Single card solutions costing so much still baffles me. It makes them really only a plausible option for people who plan to go dual cards for bragging rights.

To the average person they are fairly pointless considering that @ that insane price point you will ALWAYS be able to get a dual card setup from the previous gen that performs better for less money.

And btw, it wont MSRP for anything close to that unless yields are so bad that they only have enough cards for the select few people who would buy them at that price. It'll MSRP for $499.99 or nobody will buy it. Of course there will be people who get gouged on "first run" units from e-sellers for that much.

people might not buy it even if it is priced at 499. once fermi comes out ATI prices are gonna drop and a 5970 will probably cost around 500-550 so a 5970 will be better because i am pretty sure Fermi wont beat the 5970

Actually, the current ATI offerings are ( based on scant net born speculation ) going to be so close to fermi performance wise that they wont need to drop prices to stay competitive. They are going to be marginally inferior at worst and will already be cheaper by default.

I want this to be clear - THAT PRICE IS NOT ACCURATE! Even the listed specs are incorrect, they go against what Nvidia has said and what is physically capable (i.e. neither GTX 470 nor GTX 480 cannot facilitate a 2GB quantity of memory, it has to be either 1920MB or 2304MB). Many people have already contacted Sabre and their response has been that they a) dont have the card, b) are accepting preorders with their suggested retail price which is subject to change once Nvidia decides what to charge, lastly c) they are currently unsure of when they will get them - but they have stated that they will get multiples of the first batch.

This is the only CONFIRMED news

He's confusing them with 5970s, which would BLOW the GTX 480 out of the water.

ok can we PLEASE put this into some consideration,

this is not too pricey, well not as pricey as some hyped it to be.

ATI's 5870 is now at $400 and was somewhere between $500 and $600 at launch.

For the beast that we all know the 470 will be i say its not that bad.

seeing what specs i have i will consider that it will compete with the 5970, which is @ $700 and was alot higher at launch

so yes it is expensive but not as bad as everyone hyped it to be

I don't know where you live, or where you were looking for 5870's, but I never saw the prices that high. I got my 5870 at launch for less than $400. As far as I know, it has always been between $370 and $440. Over $600 for a single-gpu video card is absurd.

It was when they had the 40nm processing production issue. which caused shortages bumping the prices over $500 for the 5870 and the 5850 was over 400 for a time. after the next shipment came the prices dropped.

Ahhh, that's true.. but it was relatively brief, and it wasn't at launch. The prices were right where they were supposed to be at launch, and for a few weeks right after it. ATI can't control fabrication screw-ups at TSMC anymore than Nvidia can.

WTF is wrong with you people - Nvidia has not confirmed any price scale yet, let alone MANUFACTURED THE DAMN CARD! They have only anounced that the card will finally be revealed at PAX. SabrePC even has confirmed that THAT IS THEIR OWN SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE AS THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT NVIDIA OR THE BOARD MANUFACTURERS WILL BE CHARGING!

Whose to say the fermi match up to the 5900 cards which go for 600-700 dollars. As was stated early, people just put a speculatory price up base on prices of ati highest card. Just wait and see. No need to argue that X hypothetical > Y real thus Y = win. We don't know anything.

Same price as my entire PC, and I am very happy with my performance. This card out performs anything practical at this time, and so do some other cards on the market. This is only for the people that truely want the best of the best whether it is needed or not.

IF it actually costs that much, it would mean that it would be a killer performer. they would NEVER sell it for that price, if it wouldn't be worth it, cos they have ATI's 5000-series to beat.

and, according to rumors, it will not be a killer performer:

"Getting back to the selective showings of the GTX480, there is a good reason for it. The performance is too close to the HD5870, so Nvidia will be forced to sell it at HD5870 prices, basically $400. The GPU isn't a money maker at this price point, and at best, Nvidia can price it between the $400 HD5870 and the $600 HD5970. The only tools left to deal with this issue are PR and marketing as the chip is currently in production."

Source, but yes, just rumors.

My sig is green cause it stands out - but otherwise you do have a point. I just get riled up with all the hypothetical's that have become damn near facts with the whole fermi/5000 debate. People quote Charlie/Semi Accurate/The Inquirer as if they are Prez Jen and disregard the fact that AMD/ATI are the formers sole sponsors. If Nvidia does price it at 700 they will price themselves out of the market, regadless of the performance. The 5000 is a worthy card, it is not a 3000 so they cant use that as their leverage. Nvidia may have a huge chip on their shoulder, but they are not stupid as to the corner they are in with this launch.

cool so after about 6 to 8 months after it launches, it will be around $350-450 (by then drivers will be better, and there will be more of a reason to even go dx11)

with the temperature rumor, i'm more worried about overclocking headroom and fan noise than the price. and yes the price is insane. i remember when i bought 4870x2 when it just came out and even that i only paid a total of 650 canadian

cool so after about 6 to 8 months after it launches, it will be around $350-450 (by then drivers will be better, and there will be more of a reason to even go dx11)

I know this isn't the place, but I have to give you MASSIVE props for your inclusion of the Venus Project in your sig. Barely a soul knows about, let alone grasps the concept, but they would all benefit from it.

as well as democracy.

Well I'll be...while this isn't quite confirmed (At least not by Nvidia), the pricing so far appears to be correct!

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20100225PD202.html

ATI doesn't even have to try to win me this round, Nvidia have effectively priced themselves out of hte market if this is true. Fermi better be able to do my taxes, cover me at my job on sick days, and flatter me in every way possible for that price.

I may have spoke to soon! There may be light at the end of the tunnel. Nvidia claims those prices are not correct. http://www.techreport.com/discussions.x/18529

The price is official now folks read below.

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/nvidias_geforce_gtx_480_470_will_come_low_supply_high_prices

As for price, Nvidia is said to be aiming for numbers well above AMD's current line. The GTX 470 may retail for $499, and the GTX 480 could go for an eye-popping $680 at launch. For perspective, AMD's Radeon HD 5970 dual GPU card tops out at only $599 MSRP.

This is INSANE. Their top-of-the-line card had better be faster than the 5970 for these prices.. And even if it is, who needs it?
