I have a laptop with these specs:

Core 2 Duo (Penryn AFAIK) 2.5ghz

GeForce 8400gs m

2 GB DDR2 RAM

So now I was wondering how this would compare with an xbox 360? I am NOt loking for the best gaming PCs can give. I just want to know if this PC will be able to run multiplats equal to the xbox 360 graphically? I dont mind the same resolution as the xbox at all. I ahve hear that the xbox doesnt run Gears of War on 1080p or even 720p so that would allow me to lower the resolution of Gears of War PC to make it compareable to Gears of War xbox.

No a 8400 isn't a gaming card anyway.

With most graphics cards *600's are cards that are meant for gaming but not high ended gaming for the most part. *500's or lower arent meant for gaming. so your 8400gs is alot like a Geforce 6600 performance wise. Which now wont play high ended games now at all or very slowly.

Not even at xbox 360 level? Not even with low settigs and 640x480 or 800x600 res? This laptop cna play Company of Heroes alright and some basic World in Conflict at low settings. It also runs COD4 which runs at 600p on the xbox AFAIK.

Well I know from first hand when within in the 360's first year a Geforce 6600 had better graphics in the same games. But since you got a laptop that 8400gs of yours is about 15% slower than its desktop counterpart. Put this way games made 2006 or older are the only way you can even think of matching 360's gfx's with that card.

As much as I hate Xbox 360, the GPU in one is very good. Roughly, I think it's around a 8800GS or a 8600.

Yes it will run it on 640 x 800, but it will look horribe. Its not really the same on a TV and on a monitor because on TVs your far away and wont really notice it, however you stand directly in front of a comupter, so you will notice that it looks much worse, which is why PC games try to have much better resolutions and graphical detail.

ok so lets say the 9800gtx is better than the xbox GPU today, then will the 9800 still perform better in future multiplat games?

Lol people remember Prey,Cod2 and Oblivion my old geforce 6600 had better graphics than the 360 on those games. Ok if the 360 is comparable to a 8800 of any sorts how come it couldnt beat a mid ranged pc back then with a geforce 6 par graphics card on textures and draw distance, examples here http://www.gamespot.com/features/6154261/p-3.html . the hardware hasnt changed in the 360 just some new tricks too hide behind the inferior hardware.

Now it takes high end hardware to run 360 ports because of poor optminizations.

^Thats my point. If the current gen PC GPUs are at 7 series, you hear that only the 7900gtx can equal the xbox 360, when the 8 series comes out, only the 8900gtx can equal the xbox 360. It souds as though the xbox just keeps getting automatically upgraded all the time.

Um the 8 and 9 series are out and there's no such thing as a 8900gtx.

I say 7600, 8600, 9400 and above are better than Xbox. My 2600 XT kicks xbox's ass!

Wait if the 6600 is better than the xbox then Xbox can't run Crysis for crap!

The Xbox utilizes the ATI Xenos chip, which was the precursser to ATI's R600 PC platform (HD 2000/3000 series).

I believe the 360 along the lines in video power, is like a 2900XT, which runs circles around your 8400GS that I doubt will barely even support GeOW. Don't forget the 360 also has a Tri-Core Processor of 3.2ghz. I doubt there is a laptop that has a processor that can match that, and we're only starting to see desktops that can. Still, PC's have more advanced GPU's than the 360 now, hence they can play Crysis and Xbox 360 can't.

Yeah but that tri-core has 1mb of cache when a intel (duo or quad) have 6mb.

They will tailer Crysis(engine/game) for the 360 by cuting texture res, and draw distances and smaller levels with less AI.

nope expect lowest settings at 640x480 rez with crappy fram rates so expect it to look like gears of war would like if it came out on the xbox proably worse.

It's completely different from any PC processor . . . Ever. It uses in-order processing (verses out-of order on the PC) which makes it far cheaper to produce than any CPU on the PC could ever be. It also nullifies the possibility of AI that doesn't suck.

Its BASED on the 2900xt but its performance isn't even close to it. Its basically an early baby version of the 2900. Last time I checked and the 2900xt had 10x the transistors, more than 3x the shader pipelines, and a way faster core clock speed. You'd be WAY better off comparing the 360's gpu to a 2600xt

Its around a 8600-2600xt at the very most. Both are probaly a tad better than it
