okay now why do you need a 980X. are you doing some serious video encoding, rendering, or encryption? I can't really justify that in a chip - it seems more like a vanity buy.

Cant fault you for a GTX580 personally but a GTX560 Ti SLI setup might be as good - but you can just Tri SLI your GTX580s (or wait for a GTX590) if you drop the 980X

You probably won't need the 1200W PSU either - but I'd keep it if you were going to do GTX580 SLI

I will SLI the cards and the reason I bought the 6 core is just for future proof, I won't need another for a long while : )

Wait for socket 2011 or buy a sandy bridge.

Drop the 980X and get a tri sli setup - get a better CPU cooler too. Venomous X or a Silver Arrow/Noctua NH-D14. Or water cool it or ln2 jezz

or just put a downpayment on a new house and car

No point in getting the 980x, Sandy bridge is cheaper and faster in gaming!

980X is not future proof, buY the time that CPU performs better than a 2600K, you'll be looking for a new CPU, anyway.

Honestly, 980X is a waste of money, shame on Intel for not dropping the price of that thing.

Shame on them? What about the fact that they have released something more powerful for such a great price!

Yeah, I guess they deserve a pat on the back for the 1155 CPUs, but the 980X price is still a bit ridiculous.

You won't need the hex core CPU. You might not need SLI GTX 580's. Those cards in SLI are good for Nvidia surround however, they are overkill for a single screen. If I was doing anything like that I would want AMD GPU's anyway. They have 2GB of GDDR5 which is good for Eyefinity. One GTX 580 will be fine for a single screen at resolutions up to 1600p. You could justify more GTX 580's as long as the resolution does not change from that. You won't be limited by the framebuffer at 1600p.

What resolution are you playing at?
