Hello

I am currently running 2 8800gts's in SLI (640mb). I play many games and am thinking it is almost time to upgrade. I was just wondering which video cards would give me the best improvement while still being under $500. Also what kind of fps improvements can i expect?

thanks!

No, it's not time for an upgrade :P . If you are thinking of buying another card or two, what PSU do you have? You could easily SLI two GTX 275's or some such if your PSU could take it.

The 275 is a rebranded 9800/8800. Would not be much of an upgrade. You can run two 4890's for under 500 or get the 4870X2 I f you have a board that can't use Crossfire. The 295 Is the same disaster that Nvidia's previous dual card was, I wouldn't touch that. Nvidia just can't get the gripps with dual cards, while ATI has made them for years before they hit the consumer market.

If you plan on using an i7, then Nvidia should be ruled out right now, at least according to Tom's hardware as the ATI cards scale much better with the i7 chips, and from the benches I've seen I'd agree with this. I myself think that the scaling problem on i7 systems Is another Nvidia driver or hardware problem, or It could be Intel throwing a wrench In the works for trying to go toe to toe with Intel? It simply does not make sense that an architexture that has been getting the snot kicked out of It Is somehow faster, or better optimized to run one card (especially Nvidia?) and not the other, being It's own brand.

The 275 is much much better than a 9800, it is on par with a 4890.

Yah, I made an error. I know It's a rename of a current chip though, but I don't remember which one.

Ahh, yes. The 275 is supposedly a respun 260, but that's a laugh, the 275 is a 280 with a little faster shader and gpu, and 64 bit less memory width. Well, that's what happens when one stares at the sun to long, It fries the brain.

GTS250 is the rebranded 9800 GTX+, 275 is far superior than those cards.

It really wouldn't surprise me if your E6600 was bottlenecking your 295, because it's definitely bottlenecking your RAM.

Time for a 45nm me thinks :P

Not worth the upgrade unless you have a huge monitor imo.

Not really, the gtx 275 is pretty much one of the gpu's used on the 295, you might be thinking of the gts250...

I recommend a GTX 295 (fastest card on the market to date) or wait for the 4890X2 which is due out soon as vendors are clearing out the 4870X2 stock. In both cases your CPU will need to be at 3.5GHz + to avoid bottlenecking these cards. If you want something to tie you over then a GTX 275 to retain your option to SLI. (GTX 295 is essentially two GTX 275).

ATI is hoping to have theirs on the market by August, and nVidia by October. I'm waiting on the second gen DX11 cards though, since my 2x 7950gt's can max out anything on the market...
