I have a Dell Inspiron i580-5108NBC. It's a pretty good gaming computer for a pre-built with the exception of the GPU- The NVIDIA GeForce GT220. So, I want to upgrade it. I know that I'll need a bigger PSU too. But, I have heard that Dell's have a taller PSU or something so I wanted to ask here about it. I don't really have a budget, since these are going on my Christmas list, but it can't be too expensive. For the GPU, I was thinking the GTX460. Would I see a big performance boost in games with that? And would heat be a concern? And would they fit inside the case?

I don't really know where to find detailed info, like the motherboard, but: Intel Core i5 650 NVIDIA GeForce GT220 8gb DDR3 RAM 1tb 7200rpm HDD And I think it's a Micro ATX Dell motherboard or something like that

its currently sporting actually some hot stuff parts..

8gb ddr2 ram, core i5 3.2ghz (2 core), gt220 330watt psu

id say toss the psu and the gpu

replacements can be had for say 130 bucks thatd waste those two nicely.. youd be set for another year or so and then an upgrade is a hop skip and jump away

1440x900, but I plan on getting a bigger monitor and that would likely be 1080p.

That's why I bought it. I was forced to buy a pre-built and it had pretty good specs for an $800 pre built. It performs pretty decent in games already- with a GPU and PSU upgrade I would easily get a year and a half out of it, at least, and then I can get a new case, mobo, and CPU.

MSI N460GTX CYCLONE 1GD5/OC GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video CardYou will benefit

from the 1GB of Memory at 1080p. Looking at the inside Photos, the GTX 460 should fit inside your case.

Good PSU that should last you awhile and survive more upgrades down the road

But isn't Intel changing the socket? I could go to an i5 750, but that's 45nm and not 32nm. I thought that wouldn't work?

Do dells motherboards support CPU upgrades? I thought the BIOS was locked so such upgrades were impossible?

Well you could get a 500-600 W Corsair power supply and a GTX 460 1Gb to be future proof. And it wont even cost you that much if the speccs are true its pretty decent.

Those look good. I think I'll open up my computer and measure to be safe. I've checked before and there's nothing blocking a longer GPU. And the PSU will fit for sure? Anything better someone wants to recommend?

What resolution do you game at?gmaster456
I saw BluRayHiDef post this monitor in another thread: http://www.neweggbusiness.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236102&Tpk=VE248 And I think I'm adding it to the list. So, I guess I'll be gaming at 1080p now.

I'd go for a rear-exhausting GTX 460 instead of one that dumps heat into the case; considering that the OP's case incorporates a single 120mm exhaust fan for cooling, I'm pretty certain that his system will need all the help it can get in keeping ambient temperatures low.

Something along the lines of this would do nicely.

Dells use a in house psu. It's a custom psu you cant replace it with a consumer 3rd party psu. you gotta buy one from dell. otherwise youll fry the system.

So...I can't upgrade it?

EDIT: Would I have to find a compatible one here:http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category.aspx?c=us&category_id=6732&l=en&manufact=694&s=dhs&cs=19&~ck=anav

EDIT 2: I googled it, and I found what you said, but the articles are from 2001-2006. Are you sure this applies to newer Dells?

These should help. I've looked through these guides and found nothing about needing a special PSU.
