Amazingly bad, perhaps. I played the demo (the second one, not the old one from long before the game's release), and while it was a mildly entertaining game I would probably get when I had nothing better to do, the graphics were undeniably bad. I maxed it out totally, and was very unimpressed. Not that I was expecting much. As I had figured going into it, it's your typical console FPS on the PC, a port pretending to be a multiplat, with mediocre-at-best graphics disguised by gut-wrenching amounts of bloom effects.
i've been playing through timeshift, i i must say, i just discovered that i had parallax mapping and parallax shadows off, and after turning them on, the game looks incredible. the gameplay can be at time boring, but the gfx are really good, especially the textures, and shadows. it runs very smooth for how good it looks, and the physics are actually rather realistic. to bad it's not that great of a game, it looks so damn nice. with_teeth26
The graphics are pretty dated by the likes of Crysis, UT3, COD4, even TF2's cartoony style has a leg up on Timeshift. The physics were "bleh" at best, whatever you are taking to get these effects you have to start sharing.
I love the graphics in this game, easily some of the best I've seen in the FPS genre. Everyone keeps saying that Crysis was the best looking FPS even on just medium settings, but I played Crysis on medium and wasn't too impressed at all. Timeshift looks a lot better than Crysis on medium IMO. Granted Crysis is wide open and Timeshift is closed off, but the game looks great. The textures are fantastic as well. I don't understand how anyone can say the graphics look bad.
The game plays just as good as any other recent FPS as well. Its only problem is that it lacks any real story to keep the player driven in the same way as other games do. I think this game deserves more credit than it gets.
I don't understand how anyone can say the graphics look bad.TheCheat23k
I wouldn't say that.
IMO the graphics are pretty good, a few trouble areas, but I was rather impressed! It does have a very "UE3 engine" (Saber3D) feel to it, but I personally don't mind UE3 graphics. Keep in mind also this is a game that looks significantly better on the PC versus consoles. At least according to the IGN review for example (I've only played the game on the PC). Crysis graphics this ain't though, this is corridor through and through.
The game itself is OK, probably still better than I was expecting going in. The story I could, or was, barely paying attention. The gameplay is extremely simple, however, disregarding the COOP, I'd put it about on par with Gears of War (which I thought was overrated, fun but greatly overrated).
What can I say, I thought it was alright/decent ;) so I can understand where you're coming from, it was worth my time.
The graphics are great.
The textures are amazing, a lot of reviews mention that. They look like they actually have depth, and most of them are high-res. I remember an interview where the producer said that they applied some tricks that make the paint texture on wooden doors look like it's peeled off just like in reality, and it's true.
The rain is very good looking, too.
The human models aren't quite good though.
There are awesome effects, like the water pouring down your visor (it's really impressive), or the beautiful, stylish depth of field. The flame-thrower looks absolutely mindblowing...
Overall, it looks like an UE3 done right, with the exception of the models.
The semi-destructible environments are AWESOME. The feeling of shooting through walls is great!
The puzzles are very simple, but they offer a welcomed change of pace. The pace is very well thought.
It's not just a corridor shooter. Later on you have huge indoor and outdoor areas. It's actually like a mix of FEAR, HL2, Stalker and Halo.
The design is very interesting. You must remember that this game is a damn Frankenstein, it basically looks like it's made in the scrapyard! It's steampunk vs sci-fi vs history vs whatever. Some set-pieces are amazing, and many others have an interesting look.
The shooting mechanics are good, it has really fun guns and it feels right when you shoot something.
Mix that with the awesome time-powers, which are better than in FEAR or PoP!!! Man, killing dudes rocks in Timeshift. I can have fun all day long playing with them, using my awesome powers to make them die in the most gruesome way. You have craploads of ammo and tons of enemies, so it never gets boring. If someone likes old-school shooters, they'll like Timeshift too.
Speaking of which, Timeshift feels like an updated Quake. A certain level is 50% a remake of a Quake 2 level. This is the game that it's closest to Timeshift.
And finally, the AI is smart. It's VERY aggresive, enemies hunt in packs, can take cover, try to flank you or make you get away from your cover, and are very agile. They also have a lot of health points.
So, as a conclusion: Timeshift is a dumb, B-movie-like shooter. But it nails the mechanics better than a lot of other games and offers lots of dumb, straight-to-video style fun. Dumb, dumb, dumb. That's the spirit!
Given it's troubled history, it's marvelous that it resulted in such a fun experience.
And the multiplayer is one of the best ever. It's designed by Russia's UT champion, and it shows. It's highly customisable (think about Halo 3's Forge) and offers a lot of fun, original mechanics. Too bad the game flopped...
I'm sure it will have a sequel eventually. Saber shows genuine talent, and the concept is ace. Timeshift feels like an unpolished diamond... The sequel will certainly be a polished one.
Buy it if you like old-school fun.
funny how some people say timeshift sucks, yet call crap like doom 3, quake 4 good games. omenodebander
Only opinions buddy :)
Personally i think doom 3 is a classic, quake 4 was okay and timeshift was very good.
It has rather clean looking visuals for a cross platform game, but the environments are dead (very still, little motion) and the game itself was boring.
Usually when I get any shooter I play right through to the end because they tend to be short, Timeshift is the only one I got bored of before completing. It relies on throwing large sums of eagle eyed troops at the player to keep them busy; which gets boring over time.
Granted I figured that much from the demo so didn't go out and buy it, but my brother thought it would make a cheap and easy birthday present.
