I am going to be getting a computer soon and I am not sure if I want to get World of Warcraft for it or not. I have a extremely obsesive personality when it comes to RPGs and I to force myself to think I am actually the person playing. I am afraid that by playing WoW, WoW well take over my life. I am scared and crying in a corner right now...please...help.

If you have that kind of obsessiver personality I suggest you do not go WoW... Other MMOs won't be as bad, one that comes to mind would be EQ2.

If you want to play a game that is focused on PROGRESSION and achievements...and ultimately end in raiding.

Then WoW is for you.

This game ends in raiding, and since it give BETTER rewards, and that we are talking about a game where the rewards and progression is everything, raiding is enforced...at the end of the path, but enforced nonetheless.

EQ can be lumped in with WoW, possibly even categorized as worse since leveling takes so much more time.

WoW is very friendly to the casual players, but it can also become an obsession for the more compulsive of us.

Go download the trial...if you get to the level cap of 20 in less than four days, I think you should avoid WoW.

What about PVP? PVP gear is completely different from raid gear. People cannot raid well in PVP gear, and people die easily from other players in PVP gear. And besides, do you really just want to level on forever?

Considering Wow does that to anyone regardless of personality for you it may just be a double whammy that puts the last nail into the coffin of whatever your social life maybe. I strongly recommend you don't. And maybe for any mmo for that matter.

I used to play WoW when it came out. But i quit after hitting lvl 70 its pretty fun, you do get hooked playing it espically if you have friends playing it makes it so much better. But Try it out with the trial and see if you like.

Expensive? 15 dollars a month...Compare that to the cost of groceries, bills and other living expenses. A lot of people pay a lot of money for other hobbies, and although your spending an extra 15 dollars a month, if you can afford all of these things and have enough money left over, its hardly 'incredibly expensive'...unless of course, your younger and your most likely keeping your WoW subscription active with your own money, then thats a different situation...Still, if they get an average allowence, it shouldnt be that bad.

And to the person who said 'regardless of your personality, its addictive',its the exact same concept as, say, alcohol. Most normal people can enjoy it in a reasonable fashion and not get completely plastered. Same thing with WoW, most normal people can play for 30-minutes, maybe even 2 or 3 hours at a time and still lead a normal life. But your life would already have to be utterly horrible if you are to become attached to a virtual character.

WoW is an excellent game, a fun game, a quality game. Any other MMO has the potential to become very addictive, just like WoW.

I have played the game long enough and seen it happen to too many people I know, to see that it is a highly probable outcome. No not everyone who gets hopelessly addicted to the game had their life in the gutter before. In the same way not eveyone who is an alcoholic got there cause their life was in the gutter. Take this into account the topic creator said he had an obsessive personality shows that as an even higher probability than just your average person.

As for my post I would like to apologize I can see I did not word my post exactly the way I meant. (Meant to use the words 'can do' instead of 'does') I meant it not as an absolute statement, but more as a high probability. The real point is however there is not just one type of person who can get addicted to a game. Anyone can.

$180 a year? I think most sane people would consider that incredibly expensive for just one game. I could buy four games for that price.

its all realtive man.

however ,180 dollars over 365 days is not a lot. That means having a glass of water with your lunch instead of one of the those 50-cent sodas. That means getting 6 coffees a week instead of 7. It means cutting back on smoking.

In comparison, xbox live is what? 150 a year? Not to mention their games cost about 15 dollars more than PC games.

So, relative to all other unneeded luxuries, I find WoW the best deal around. I mean there isnt one single game out right now I want to buy, so instead of compulsively buying one game per month like I used to, I just buy another month of WoW.

Expensive? Yes, it is more expensive than nothing. But incredibly expensive? No, its a great deal.

Xbox Live is 50 dollars a year.

But yea I do agree actually not just Wow but any mmo is cheaper for that matter if you play games all the time that is. If you don't though I can see where you would think it is expensive. Its a matter of perspective.

Video games cannot be addictive. Unless you'd like to prove the disc released an addictive substance into the air when being played your claim is purely nonsense. People don't get addicted to games and the ones that claim they do had no trace of a real life to begin with. In addition, World of Warcraft is both longer and much cheaper than an average game. Most games released presently can be completed in a few hours so they will give you about 5 days of play if you play for an hour or two every evening. World of Warcraft basically doesn't have a real "ending". Lets do the math. To have a game to play every evening you would need to buy approximately 6 games a month. PC games cost about 50 dollars. WoW can provide constant entertainment until the player decides to quit.

$50 X 6 = $300

1 month of WoW = $15 (After initial game purchase.)

Therefore your argument is entirely false.

Play 2 hours an evening for two years and you have 1460 hours. 1000 hours isn't much.

Gambling is addictive. They have AA meetings for people who have gambling addiction. People blow fortunes in Vegas. Before the term addiction may have been used exclusively for substance dependency, however now with with further research on the Brain and its proccesses show that many behaviors can be just as chemically addictive as a substance. Although much debated some believe many of these compulsive behaviors that are stimulated from certain aspects of gambling can be found in video games. So the statement about the disc releasing some sort of addictive substance into the air to be addictive is ridiculous.

I do not believe however that video games in General are addictive. I think they can be to some. But to say these people had to be losers to get addicted is both narrowminded and disdainful.

It was intentionally ridiculous in mocking of how ridiculous a "video game addiction" sounds.

But to say these people had to be losers to get addicted is both narrowminded and disdainful.

Care to provide an alternate explanation then?

Something does not have to have chemical compounds entering the bloodstream to be addictive. Some people are born with what are called "addictive personalities". These people are more easily prone to addiction of any sort because their bodies produce an excess of the hormone that triggers "happiness" in people. This hormone is released through a variety of methods: yes, snorting some coke can release it, but so can having sex and playing video games (both activites are substance-free).

With that said, your argument does have some merit. The difference between someone with an addictive personality that does drugs and someone that plays games is dependency. People can form dependencies on drugs and can even die if they go through withdrawel; however, no one addicted to WoW can go through withdrawel. The worst they might experience is a mood swing for a couple days as they are getting their daily allotment of "happy hormone", somewhat similiar to someone going cold turkey from nicoteine.

As a result, I too find video game "addiction" too severe a term. I think "obsession" is more appropriate. The problem, and the solution, rest entirely in the victims hands, not in the substance being abused. In the case of addiction, the cause of the problem is the person but the problem itself is a drug. I know its a fine line, but I feel its important to distinguish it.

Ah, put much better than I could've. I stand corrected on my gibe at the use of addiction, though.

Your argument can be applied to any game, and, in an extension of the concept, can be applied to almost any form of entertainment or hobby.

WOW is a great game, but you have to remember, if you want to get to 70 and actually be good its not like other games, in WOW, Gear > Skill. If someone has better gear than you, there is a 99% chance you will lose every single time, WOW is all about gear if you want to either play PVP at a high level or raid. And to get the gear, be prepared to put in a LOT of hours to get it. WOW is awesome, but extremely time consuming if you want to be pretty good at it.

if that is the case then DO NOT PLAY WOW!!!

it will become your whole life....you will become slow, fat, ugly, and blind!:|

WOW does this to everyone, so , in your case, it would be significantly worse than that (except for the cool people that can somehow handle it):P

Then u really don't know what ur talking about, MMORPGS are LIFE EATERS, PLAY wow for example, u can't compare a single player game or let's say to play live on x360, i mean, if u play wow, u have the following program, wake up play, u eat, play, play play, and u slepp, and in the next morning there goes again.

and wow is the best, to suck ur life, u go so deep in to the game(i know many ..MANY people, i avoided that)that u don't have time for other things..............and a hobby is s hobby u loly, a hobby doesn;'t take all day and stuff hobby's take some hours not days, wow is an obsesion for others, jeeez, man i won't say nothing.

If u have no ideea then don't talk ****

I am a MT for a raid and I dedicate 4 evenings a week to it. I haven't looked back. Pretty much the pinnacle of my gaming experience over the years.

WoW is as addictive as any other MMORPG, play them at your own risk.
I can only imagine in the future taxes imposed on playing MMORPG, just like the ones they have for tobacco right now... Because the freaking thing is really addictive

Your argument can be applied to any game, and, in an extension of the concept, can be applied to almost any form of entertainment or hobby.

If u have no ideea then don't talk ****

lern speeling/gramar plz k thx...

Are you talking to yourself at the end of the post?

[QUOTE="cmdrmonkey"]It's both addictive and incredibly expensive. You might as well just hit up the crack pipe. cmdrmonkey

$180 a year? I think most sane people would consider that incredibly expensive for just one game. I could buy four games for that price.

Yes but are those 4 games going to last you all year? People who play WoW rarely play other games.

I wouldn't recommend playing WoW, it was better at launch . World pvp was best at that time , nothing was limited . Everyone didn't run around in completely atheistic armour set , epic mounts were a symbol of power and the ranks made you king or peasant. Now all is gone , world pvp is totally non-existent because of the Arenas, battle areas etc... Azeroth is practically empty besides the two major cities , everyone have least one epic mount . The economy is messed up because of inflation caused by the gold farmers , all weapon and armour set that was so awesome pre-TBC is now obsolete in the fact that one green lvl 61 item beats an epic MC lvl 60 weapon. The armour sets are increasing in numbers and useless and cartoonish types.

World of Warcraft is no longer the great game that i played , it now resembles flyff . There is no goal or fun in this game anymore .End of rant made by old open beta player .And yes i have played the burning crusade and got to 66 , but then it just got ridiculously bad.Flaming this post will have no effect whatsoever , so every hardened fans and trolls just forget it.

That is so unbelievably incorrect and filled with blatant lies I don't know why I'm even responding to it at all. In this response I'm ignoring the extremely senseless parts and just going for the core of the argument. I play WoW, and this may be terrifying enough to rip open the very fabric of the universe for you but... I'm completely capable of only playing for an hour or two. Self-control is your friend, paranoia that borderlines on conspiracy-theories about MMOs is not.
