Thinking about getting Starcraft 2, however I am concerned that since it's been out for some time, then I will be way outranked and noobified online. Wondering what the Starcraft 2 community online is like? I am trying to find a good online game these days that I can learn and get my teeth into, but also get advise from others if needed.

no, not even. the game has only been out a year. And if anyone tells you the multiplayer is too hard to get into, its really not. Just have fun with it, and us the resources that are available online to get better.

I might give it a go then. I have played RTS like Supreme Commander and C&C.
Does it have pretty decent matchmaking? Don't want to start against some gold veteran that does tournaments as a job.

It actually has challenges you can take to prepare you for common online tactics, a 'practice league' where you can play 50 non-mandatory casual matches in very slow speed and then, when you feel ready, you can take your 5 placement matches which, depending on the results, will place you in a league ranging from Bronze/Silver/Gold/Plat/Diamond/Masters. So, obviously you will be matched with players at ur skill lvl. When u start to improve and thus win alot, you will be matched against players from higher leagues, and eventually get promoted to a higher league, and vice versa if ur losing all the time. There are some bugs and glitches in the system, as well as the occasional Masters-league skilled player farming wins on bronze league, but generally it's a fantastic matchmaking system and I dont think there's anything like it.

no, your first 50 games, are not normal ladder games, they are put on custom maps for novice players to let you get a hang of the game on your own.

This actually sounds like a pretty smart system. Off to give Blizaard my hard earned cash.

What's this Real ID? Do I have to enable that to play online?

RealID = your real name, it's always there but nobody will see that, except you and the friends you add specifically through it, this is for "real" friends mostly. Others will just see you in game name, the default way of adding friends is through their in game name and an account number to avoid duplicate names.

You first have 50 matches that realy suck cause they have some stupid rocks that dont allow u to rush etc. After that you have 5 placement matches, where you get matched against all skill levels, and after that you get placed in league where you belong based on your skill, so you have fun all the time. You can advance by wining games and get demoted by losing.

Just finished registering, and thought I should start the single player campaign first. Might be a good starting point.Just played the first sections of the campaign on normal and hard. Wow, so far this makes Command & Conquer 4 seem mehhhh.

When I just started it at main screen I can't believe the game is saying there's about 500,000 players online. Looks like I found a game that has massive multiplayer.

C&C 4 was meh :P and SC 2 usually has from 750K to 1 million, especially on Saturday and Sunday.

I started SC2 a good year ago. It was the first RTS Ive played online that truly needed skill. I played SupCom online but it was always just a battle of the experimentals and I didnt like it. But anyway, I got into the beta for SC2 and started learning. It honestly helps a lot to watch videos and start learning the lingo. Part of succeeding is understanding how people are communicating. It also takes practice and being willing to self evaluate and try to improve.

Here are a few links to start watching videos:

www.youtube.com/huskystarcraft

day9tv.blip.tv

The second one is very useful. The guy is born to teach Starcraft. lol. Hope that helps. ALSO - play custom games and just play to get used to what you have to do to start well and move through the game. Learn to be okay with LOSING.

You don't have to do ladder you know. If you don't like that sort of challenge, there are plenty of custom maps you can play. There are the typical Dota and Tower Defense maps, but lots of other unique game types. Also Blizzard occasionally releases an Official custom map (all free) with good production value.

its GM, and you won't ever race pro's or good players unless you are actually at that level . The match making system is excellent and matches you against noobs such as yourself! Its great, its fun, never to late!

Not to thread jack, but would you guys recommend completing the entire SP campaign before going on to MP? Because I, as well, just got SC2.

I see. Thanks. I think I'll do about 6 missions or so before jumping into MP.

Be aware that the SP game teaches you next to nothing about how the MP works.

Thanks everyone. Got it and playing it. All other games have totally been put aside, loving it. Couldn't find it cheap anywhere though. I really thought games come down in price after a year.

oh there are much better matchmaking systems tan blizzards and there are far mroe than "a few" msters level players in bronze level matyches. try more like 40% of the players are this.

Keep believing that, because a few suffer enough to remain in bronze to for some reason own newbies, now almost half of the community does that, it makes you wonder why there still are active leagues above bronze, "behind" numbers never proved anything and there aren't matchmaking systems that are better, because there are few 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 games out there that use matchmaking and makes it decent, higher than 3v3 is worthless like all matchmaking games, the sum of skill =/= the other sum of skill, having decent players will always win a match with experts and newbies on the other team.

Dunno what you guys are talking about, I've had a fantastic experience with the matchmaking thus far. Was never in Bronze tbh, but from Silver to Plat the matchmaking was excelent. Team games with my friends or with random team have also been quite good. Maybe it's different for the NA servers, my experience comes from the EU servers.

I just recently started playing again after about a 6 month hiatus. I was around 50 diamond when I quit. I lost and it placed me into Plat again... and now I just keep losing (with my score barely diminishing). How many more games will I have to be battered around before I get into a league that fits my level? :/

Win more than half of your games and have a winning streak when you're close to promotion or lose all your games and hope that you'll get demoted soon :P.

Hmm, OK. It actually put me into Diamond (rank 100 though), so I guess I'll just lose for a bit. I play random now, so that + taking a break = I now suck.

The SP Challenges are what teach you about MP BUT when I got the game I tried to drag out the SP for as long as possible so I played MP a lot/
