The top 10 PC games of all time? For a change, I'm going to choose some of the games that brought us great innovations, or managed to revitalise a genre:
'Gold Box' games (including Eye Of The Beholder series) - for giving us 'first person' RPGs.
Secret Of Monkey Island - for defining the standards of a great graphical adventure game.
Wolfenstein 3D - for bringing us the FPS genre
Doom - for refining and popularising the FPS genre, and kick-starting multiplayer, co-op and LAN
Quake - for giving us the first true 3D environments and characters
Thief - for giving us first person stealth mechanics
Age Of Empires 2 - for refining the game that revitalised the RTS genre
Baldur's Gate - for revitalising the RPG genre
Deus Ex - for refining the concept of the RPG/FPS hybrid first explored in the System Shock series.
Morrowind - for giving gamers the ability to easily modify a single player RPG and share their creations with the rest of the world
Those would be some of my picks, though there are quite a few others that fit the criteria.
Not only can I list the ten greatest PC games of all time I can also tell why they're there.
1. Doom, It is the father of the FPS-genre and the game that made the FPS genre popular to start with, additionally it created "Deathmatch".
2. Starcraft, While not the first RTS it is responsible for probably the greatest influence placed upon the international Gaming community, It is also a immensely popular "sport" in South-Korea where there is three Channels that show tournaments between proffesional Starcraft players, who earn several thousands of dollars.
3. Sim City, First appearing on the Amiga and Macintosh, it took the Gaming community by storm when it allowed you to build and maintain a city. Over the years several sequels have been made which has increased it's popularity. Even today it is the most popular City-building simulation game.
4. Thief, While not the first stealth game, it was the first stealth game to use light and sound as gameplay mechanics, and the first to feature a first-person perspective. It's influence have affected later stealth games such as Splinter Cell and Hitman.
5. Deus-ex, A First Person shooter with roleplaying elements, aswell as pioneering designs in player choices and multiple narrative paths. It was given nearly worldvide critical and industrial acclaim, included being called "The best PC game of all time" and a frequent candidate and winner of the Game of the year awards.
6. World of Warcraft, While not being the first Role Playing Massive Multiplayer Online Game it is the most popular with more than 11.5 million subscribers, landing it the title of "The worlds most succesfull MMORPG" aswell as a place in the Guinness World Record as being the most popular. It is estimated to hold 62% of the MMORPG subscription market.
7. Need for Speed, The most popular racing game series, it's original which was released on both consoles and PC was praised for it's realism, audio and real-time video commentaries of the ingame cars. It's got 15 sequels and the series have sold over a 100 million copies.
8. Grand Theft Auto, Controversial with a capital C, GTA has risen over the years to become the game series you either love or love to hate. It faced mixed reception upon release in 1997 due to it's content. Even today it is considered the most popular controversial Action-adventure game. The series is concidered a gargantuan success with over 70million compies sold worldwide and with 10 world records in the Guinness World Record, it has also paved the way for similar games such as Saints Row, Mafia, The Getaway and more.
9. Diablo, The most popular "Hack'n slash", "Point and click" RPG game, The game was praised for it's dark theme, addictive gameplay, atmosphere and high replayability. While Diablo was a popular game, it's sequel swept across the PC Gaming community with a vengeance, It sold more than 1 million units in the first two weeks of availability, landing it a spot in Guinness Book of World Records for being the fastest selling Computer game sold.
10. The Sims, In 2002, The Sims became the top-selling PC game in history, displacing the game Myst, by selling more than 6.3 million copies worldwide. As of 2005, the game has shipped 16 million copies worldwide and in 2009 the series had sold more then 100 million copies. It's also succesfull in having attracted Casual gamers and Females,The latter being the 50% of those that play The Sims series, into the Gaming community which is dominated by males.
If your list doesn't have Half Life 1 on it, you're doing it completely wrong.denter21is half life that good.? i never played it :P
Ah, Jazz Jackrabbit...those were the days. But it wasn't CliffyB's first game. His first commercially published one was a first-person point-and-click adventure known as The Palace of Deceit: The Dragon's Plight, which was apparently good enough to get him hired by Epic MegaGames (remember when they called themselves that?). He then made a similar game called Dare to Dream, and after that, he got cracking on Jazz Jackrabbit, Unreal, etc. Back on topic, though...this is going to be tough to round out the lower 10, but here goes: 1 - Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters 2 - Deus Ex 3 - System Shock 2 4 - Magic Carpet 2: The Netherworlds 5 - Fallout 6 - Outcast 7 - Unreal Tournament 1999 8 - MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries 9 - IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 10 - Rocket Jockey Honorable mentions: -Thief (The only reason why 1 and/or 2 aren't in the top ten is because I haven't played the full versions yet...but I had a lot of fun faffing about in Lord Bafford's manor many years ago!) -Descent (series) -Tribes (1 and 2, undecided on Vengeance) -MDK (series) -Battlefield 1942 -Unreal Tournament 2004 (just edged out by UT 1999) -MechWarrior 3 (Of course, I tend to change up my top game lists every so often. Heck, if I just start having more online sessions soon, I may end up putting Falcon 4.0: Allied Force in the top ten for sure...)These in addition to Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Quake 2 and a game that perhaps you've never heard of called Jazz Jackrabbit (Cliffy B's first video game) ;)
