My first and still favorite is Starcraft. I`m currently playing Company of heroes and World in conflict which are also both great games.
1. COH
2. C&C Red Alert
3. Warcraft II
4. TA
5. Close Combat: Invasion Normandy
6. StarCraft
7. Dune2
8. Close Combat III: The Russian Front
9. Rome: Total War
10. Myth 2
I agree with most but AoE is seriously missing, Defiatly one of the best Top5 if not 10. Also UaW is really great for War3 RTS type fans.
WiC is RTS but to me its not on the list, its like a hyrid game not really a true rts like Warraft, Age or DoW
How are Myth 2 and Dark Reign? I've read about them but I'm not sure if I would want it. Is Myth 2 reallybetter than Myth 3? What about the original myth?
this is gonna be very tough. But ill give it a go.
1: Command and ConquerRed Alert 1/2/Yuri
2: Starcraft
3: Company of Heroes
4: Dawn of War
5: Supreme Commander
6: Command and Conquer
7: World in Conflict
8: Command and Conquer Tiberium Sun
9: Age of Empires 3
10: Command and Conquer 3
[QUOTE="Ztyza"]FYI Total war games are considered Turn based strategy.pwilletts
Yes but you don't neccessarily have to fight the battles because of the automatic feature. That and most people constantly pausing the real time battles to issue orders, and that the majority of the game is spent in world map is enough for me to say it shouldn't be thrown into a top 10 RTS game thread.
But the battles are Real Time Strategy and thats the biggest point of the game, being able to conquer the world and fight the classic epic battles.

myth 2 is an incredible game, obviously graphics are quite a bit dated. myth 3 follows the same formula as 2 ,and more of the same, but i preferred the campaigns myth 2 and 1 over it. myth 1 was also quite good (in fact it is in GS's greatest games of all times). also there is total conversion so that you can play myth 1 using myth 2 graphics engine

Definitely AoE2, the original AoE wasn't anything to write home about though.
Here are my Picks;
1. Red Alert 2
2. Warcraft 3
3. CoH
4. Starcraft
5.Warcraft II
6. Command and Conquer
7. Command and Conquer 3
8. Dune
9. Command And Conquer Generals
10. Medival Total War
Top 5 RTS of All Time
1. Total Annihilation
2. Age of Empires 2
3. Command & Conquer Red Alert (Original)
4. Company of Heroes
5. Dawn of War
Some of my favs:
Company of Heroes - Awesome game with the enviroment changing due to explosions etc, the Graphics are very nice even on my 6800gt and its a WW2 game.
World in Conflict - Graphics are really nice, Singleplayer was very good although a little short and Multiplayer its just great how you can drop into games at anytime rather than waiting for rooms to fill up and start.
Warzone 2100 - This was my first RTS game that i played (i think), was great gameplay and you could design your own units
Warcraft 3 - Great Singleplayer, lots of story and Multiplayer was and still is amazing
Rome: Total War - I first saw this game on a BBC program that was on every week (forgot the name), it has good graphics, Massive battles and i loved how you can zoom right in to the soldiers and watch them fight.
I don't like RTS games for the most part, but Company of Heroes and World in Conflict are awesome. The Total War games look appealing too.
BTW, anyone heard if a Company of Heroes sequel is in development?

comapany of heroes expansion is there, and i think another expansion is coming
I think all the Red Alert / Red Alert 2 picks is just the affects of time playing with peoples minds, if you go back and play the Red Alert games and compare them to other games of the 90's even they really are just spam fest unbalanced no skill garbage RTS games.
The sad thing really about the super overhyped CnC series is the latest one CNC3 is actually probably the most balanced skilled based one yet and thats not saying alot for the series since even it is a balanced spam fest train wreck.
Red Alert 1
Age Of Empires 2
Warcraft 1
Starcraft
Warcraft 3
Command and Conquer 1
Dawn of War
Age of Empires 3
Homeworld 2
Rome: Total War / Black&White 1

why do you assume we havent played them? and in their time they were alot of fun and very memorable, especially the single player campaigns. they still are, you obviously just didnt get what they were about.

Can you point me to were I said the people picking it never played it? Why would I say that even? What I SAID was if you go back and play them TODAY.
Today looking back on RA/RA2 it becomes failry obvious pretty fast that the CNC series really are thoughtless games with little concept of balance.
My thoughts at least for my mind on why I thought the games were hot stuff when I was growing up is simply because I was never looking to get into the competitive aspects of RTS games with the brain more in the early stages of my youth I was more content with the game as it was.
I'd compare to something like wrestling even, growing up many youths watch wrestling and are satisfied with those lower levels of entertainment, you could even compare it to console gaming in some ways.
All in all the CnC series is fine if you looking for some brainless fun, but I don't think thats what the RTS genre should be about personally, I'm no longer satisfied with just making a bunch of spam and throwing it in and thats what CNC is all about.
If Starcraft is Chess then the CnC series is tic tac toe.
