HomeWorld 2
Half-Life 2
Counterstrike
Diablo 2

Company of Heroes
Unreal Tournement
Fallout 2

Battlefield 2
I'll go over 10:
Call Of Duty 2
Doom III + Resurrection Of Evil
Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne
F.E.A.R. + Extraction Point
Fable The Lost Chapters
Fahrenheit (AKA Indigo Prophecy - but IP is censored)*
Far Cry
Half-Life 2
Legacy Of Kain Series (Soul Reaver 1 & 2; Blood Omen 2; LoK:Defiance)*
MotoGP Ultimate Racing Technology 3*
Prey
Psychonauts*
Quake 4
Silent Hill 2 & 3 (SH4:The Room wasn't good at all, a lot of backtracking and not scary at all...)*
Prince Of Persia Trilogy (Sands of Time; Warrior Within; The Two Thrones)*
Games marked with * requires a dual analog gamepad (Logitech RumblePad 2 is the best), since they completly suck on keyboard.
I absolutely hate strategy games and RPGs (only exception is godlike Fable), so can't help you there :P
Nobody said Deus Ex or Stalker because they are more complex games.. They are, to me, more suitable for people who have been playing FPSes for a while and are annoyed at how exactly-the-same they all are and desire something.. 'more'. Those boring Generic games you may hate by now are going to be the most fun to someone brand new. Like HL2 GTA UT2k4 Call of Duty Star Craft..
These games are more generic.. If he starts out playing those crazy complex games with all this extra crap added to them like RPG/FPS hybrids and such and he eventually figures it all out and gets into it and enjoys it.. It won't necessarily make the less complex FPSes for example any less fun, but it will feel like something is missing sometimes, or maybe that something more should be there.
Stick to those really fun, really popular games that are usually more popular because anyone can just jump into the game and enjoy it as much as the core gamers. The really fun simpler classics that almost anyone could love. The ones that are the basis for the others
