Just got a new PC, and wondering what game I should buy. I'm a FPS lover, and I'm stuck between Quake 4, Doom 3, F.E.A.R., and HL2. I'm looking for personal opinion and what GS thinks, also taking into consideration graphics, multiplayer, and price. What should I get?

Well I have all of them and they are all great. HL2 is the best bet because its a easy 12 hour game(with all the trimings)plus has css with it.

Half Life 2 will give you the best value. For $60 on Steam you can get HL2 & Episode 1, Day of Defeat Source, CSS, HL2 Deathmatch, and Half Life Source (in case you missed out on HL..I hope not!). Plus, there are a ton of good mods (both multiplayer and singleplayer) to download for free. Doom 3 has nice graphics and a fun singleplayer, but hardly anyone plays it online. Quake 4 is okay. I didn't like the demo, and more people play Quake 3 Arena multiplayer than Quake 4. FEAR singleplayer is really fun. The multiplayer can be downloaded for free, so it has a good amount of players. I thought the multiplayer got boring pretty quickly though.

Best to worst is as follows. Half-Life 2 - engrossing, great gameplay, interactive, personal Doom 3 - shooter, scary, dark, alone FEAR - scary, short, slow mo Quake 4 - short, action, vehicles

For the first time in a while, someone has asked a question like this, and I have actually played and beat every game you're considering (and still own 3 of them). I would say knock Doom 3 and Quake 4 off your list immediately, as they are good, but nowhere near F.E.A.R. or HL2 good. Between those two, though... I'd go with Half-Life 2 and then get Episode 1 immediately after beating it. Go with F.E.A.R., though if you like a taste of horror in your shooters. Half-Life 2 has a little bit of that action with the "...We don't go to Ravenholm" level, but not like the the nonstop feeling of dread you get from playing F.E.A.R. with graphics maxed, headphones on, lights off... this is making me want to play it again.

Easily Half Life 2 because it is the same price as other games but comes with Counter Strike: Source and maybe another game. Also, it has the best multiplayer imo from the games you listed. Also, it has many great mods you can get.

D/L Fear combat for free and get HL2. Doom 3 is a strong choice but few people online.

Half Life 2 is the best of those 4 games BY FAR.

Quake 4 totally sucks compared to Half Life 2.

Doom 3 is just ok. Still fades in comparison to Half Life 2

FEAR could be the game for you if you like scary games.

I was in the exact same situation a few months ago when I bought my new computer. I bought HL2, Q4 and Doom3 all in the past 3 months. that's why it is still fresh in my mind :)

Half-Life 2 is the best choice.
FEAR had great gunplay, but the single-player was dull, and the multi-player is free for anyone to download.
Doom 3 had great graphics, and more than a few shocks, but after a while things just got boring.
Quake 4 wasn't actually all that bad - the campaign was more varied than FEAR's or Doom's, and the enemies and guns weren't bad...but the game was just very mediocre.
