Is this just coincidence? My brother put together a new computer with a dual core processor, new video card, and a 600 watt power supply. So I am trying all my games at the highest settings, and when I get to FEAR I play for like 3 minutes and the whole computer just shuts off. There is a light inside to tell if there is any power going to it, and the light wouldn't turn on. I had the computer for about 3 hours total!!

Is this just a coincidence and the power supply was defective? Or did FEAR kill my computer?

That has to be a coincidence.

How many components do you have?
If you had to many then that is what killed the PSU.

Most likely though is that you got a defective unit.

I tried playing on max settings with a 350w PSU, and it ran.

But yeah, running a game like FEAR on highest settings could do that if the PSU was insufficien, but 600w seems fine to me. Depends on the other parts, I guess. It could have also just been a faulty PSU to begin with.

Yeah, my brother is the one who put the cpu together and he says it has to be a coincidence. Still, I'm not sure I'm gonna play too many PC games for awhile lol. What are the chances the power supply took anything else, like mybrand new dual core processor, with it? That's what I'm really freaked out about.

You have a small chance other components are damaged but I think it will be fine.

I have blown a few power suplies over the years and had a few motherboards completely die on me and never did I have other components that went with them.

So I think you wil be safe as for the game blowing up your psu I think that that's really a coinsidence how old was the psu and what brand ?

the few that died on me where a few years old and where cheap brands.

just buy a new good one :) I like collermaster others will say other brands.........and don't stop gaming :D

Great, thanks guys. I've been calling around and Circuit City has an Antec power supply for $44.99, which seems low. So I looked it up and it got weirder, as there is a 500 watt for $44.99, and a 380 watt for $54.99. Can anyone explain that? I know the 500 watt price is after savings, but that still seems really low. Here's the link:

okay here is your problem, you bought a cheap psu from circut city. my guess is the power supply didn't have enough amps on the 12V rail. now tell me your graphics card and country and i'll find a place/psu for you to buy.

It's just coincidence, if the power is not enough, you will have alot of restart, crash and blue screens.
