Sennheiser HD555 (Amazon. Best deal ever if you buy refurbished)
Bravo V2 tube amp (eBay only)
Zalman clip-on mic (Amazon)
Mic adapter for PS3 (Amazon again. Don't worry about what it is, it works fine according to multiple users.)
This will beat out any gaming headset easily.
If you live in America you just can't go wrong with the Sennheiser HD555. They're easily as good as anything in the $120 range. Yet cost much less.
You can even mod them to sound like a really good pair of $150-$160 pair of headphones..
^He's telling the truth. Trittons, Turble Beach, Astros, ect are all crap in terms of sound quality. And you don't need 5.1 in headphones when headphones themselves with only 2 drivers mimic surround perfectly.
They all sound crap? They sound fukcing amazing. I don't know about astros but they're just as good as far as I've red. Stop postiing crap like "they suck" etc. It's just elitism and nobody likes that.nizyoThey're good for positional sounding in shooters...and thats about it.

Once again proves AnnoyingDragon correct;
Just replace SW with headphones.
Just like to say I used to use Trittons before I got Sennheisers. I used to be stupid at one point about headphones too.

The sound is good whatever you do more or less. In fact, it's more than good. I know what I'm talking about as well Chubbyboy since I use them myself and can tell from my own experience. :)

You use them yourself. They must really sound good then, since you say so, right? No... What you're doing is you're telling me a Ford Focus is a good car. you paid £30,000 for a Ford Focus and I got a £53,000 Nissan GT-R.. Enjoy your FF. $150 headset is generally equal to $30 headphones...
I've used many different headsets/headphones since I've started gaming. Started out with sony moved to sennheiser then had the zalman 5.1 for awhile didn't like em moved on to bose finally tried the trittons after using the bose QC15 for awhile. Haven't looked back.Maybe if you've never used a pair of headphones that cost more than 30 bucks they sound good, but putting a cluster f*** of drivers into each cup is completely retarded. The pair I had didn't sound even remotely good unless I used that amp. I also find it a bit silly to only include Dolby Digital support and not DTS.
Stereo headphones are naturally good at giving a surround image. Theres no need for additional software, processors, or additional drivers. None of those offer any benefits. All you need is a pair of quality headphones and good source material.
I could never go back to using a gaming headset. The only good thing I liked about Tritton was their customer service.

Ignorance implys a lack of knowledge and unwillingness to adapt. I don't fit into either category. Please name something better. I'm always looking to upgrade. In fact before I re purchased the trittons I made a post here asking for recommendations, but no one replied."sigh.." ignorance is bliss I guess

In other words, there are dozens to chose from that will not only sound better than your standard headset, but be cheaper while doing so. A lot of ones will cost 2,3,4 or even 5 times as much but they will sound 5-20 times better. I will admit I have not listened to half of those I listed. I am soon to be an owner (perhaps tomorrow) of the AKG K702s. The sound is mind blowing. They literally sound like $800+ headphones yet I bought them for $250 with free shipping and no tax and got staff discount on all future purchases at the store, because of the huge delay. Ordered them 3+ weeks ago, not arrived yet :("sigh.." ignorance is bliss I guess

Edit - Nevermind those things are $1500, for that price they damn well better do more than sound great.
