Trouble installing SSD

So I hooked my new SSD in to make sure it was working before I formatted my HDD, but it's not showing up in My Computer. I know it's in there because Windows showed a message about a new drive or something when I rebooted. Haven't bothered to check BIOS at all yet, but don't know what I'd find there. I did switch it to a different SATA port, but still nothing. Am I missing something?

you need to go to control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management.

under disks you should see the SSD as unallocated.

It will not show up under my computer until you partition it and assign it a drive letter (obviously dont do this - just boot from the windows cd and let it do what it needs to).
