After playing Borderlands 2, I quite enjoy looting and playing co-op with some people. I'm in the mood of a hack n slash and Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3 come to mind. I'm trying to decide which one to get as I'll only be purchasing one of them anyway. From what I hear, you can properly set your attributes every time you level in Torchlight 2. I remember playing the D3 beta and the skill trees seemed kind of restricted.

Anyone got any opinions on which one is better for it's value?

T2 wins, yeah you can assign stat points and you also assign skill points. Skills get new attributes at certain tiers which can do more than just increase damage. T2 has more awesome loot and is much more randomized than Diablo 3. Campaign is longer and monsters better designed.. You are free to use many potions in T2, unlike D3.

Have not played D3 yet, but I can say Torchlight 2 is a great hack and slash rpg.

You could check out Titan Quest and its expansion if you like greek mythology.

Yeah, I've already beat it, it was pretty good.

I realised there was a demo for T2, tried it and I quite enjoyed it. I liked the fact that with my Engineer, I can take three different skill trees that would focus on certain areas like becoming a bashing menace, a projectile healer or a tank. Not to mention that T2 will have a good modding community or already has. I think I'll be getting Torchlight 2. It seems more ambitious.

I only played the beta for D3 but that was more than enough. I'm actually enjoying TL2 and I am typically not a fan of hack-n-slash rpgs. For $20 you can't go wrong.

I would go with TL2, it's every bit as good as D3, lasts longer (arguably) and it's 1/3 of the price. Easy choice for me.

D3 is better then TL2 by miles, don't listen to the cheap gamers in this thread. TL2 is like the poor mans D3. D3 had a very bad drop rate when it was released and it got well dserved bad rep, seemed bills was controlling drops or throttling them to keep RMAH sales up. That has all changed now and many improvements have been made. It has hands down the best gameplay for a ARPG. TL 2 got boring after just a few hrs. Lol at the Guy who suggested Titan quest, wtf is it with you cheap bastards on these forums and old ass games .

Price doesnt always reflect quality. Especially in this specific case. D3 is a poor mans D3. TL2 is D2's true successor in every way. Considering you talked about drop rates like its a massive plus, I guess you play these games for the mind numbing grind, so keep enjoying D3.

I've enjoyed Torchlight II far more than I have Diablo 3. But you can't go wrong with either one, they are both great games.

Nah... I dont agree. Torchlight 2 looks really childish. Diablo 2 have more horror atmosphere wich I like. D3 feels more cartoonish too but Torchlight 2 looks like a good story for 5 year old kids.

Diablo III's story: stop evil

Torchlight II's story: stop evil

Yeah one is clearly more targeted towards kids than the other

Im writing about Diablo 2 = Torchlight 2. Its not about the target of the game but how it looks. Even if D3 is cartoonish too but I like graphics style more. T2 really looks like a fable. I dont like cartoonish style.

Torchlight 2 is cartoony if you're into that style of art direction : ) I liked what I saw of it, but roguelike games aren't my preferred genre so I didn't play it much.

And from what my sooper elite D3 friends tell me, the majority of the D3 playerbase doesn't really know how to play the game other than focusing on looting and then wondering why their glass cannon builds die so fast. (I don't play D3 so I wouldn't react in any way if someone took offense to this.) But I also like D3's art direction as well, from what I've seen of it.

I played d3 for 2 weeks and got bored and wish i hadn't spent all that money on that and blizzard security sucks d3 and wow account got hacked and they gave me a hard time to have this crap fixed.

Torchlight 2 is simpler and more fun at 1/3 the price.

i was really excited to get d3...played the beta and had some questions about it...but i still had it preordered because...well...i put more hours into d2 that i want to even think about...ahh middleschool...gotta say when i picked up d3 i really wanted to enjoy it...played it by myself mostly...but everyone once in awhile id get to hit up a game with my brother and his wife or a couple of my friends...but...they stream lined it waaay to much(only 6 skills really?) and after about a month i have no desire to play it anymore...nor do i know anyone who plays it still...it was such the disappointment. it could have been so good...but nope not even close

the good news is...torchlight 2 came out and its more like d2 than d3 can even hope to be...and i actually think its the all around better game(kinda sad when you consider how much money blizzard had to throw at their dev team to make it)

Diablo 3 is a great game and it's got a lot of polish that Torchlight 2 doesn't have, obvisouly, given Diablo 3 probably had 10 times the budget fo Torchlight 2.

That being said, torchlight 2 is also a great game, what those guys managed to do with such limited resources is pretty amazing. If you have to choose between the two, I'd go Diablo 3, just for the polished experience, but definitley pick up torchlight 2 on the holiday sale. It's aorund $20 now, and in the sale I wouldn't be suprised to see it go for $10.

Diablo 3 with the latest patch is nothing like Diablo 3 at launch. 99% of the people who hate on Diablo 3 now only remember the pretty poor launch. Just like Diablo 2, the game came a long way with a few patches that fixed the vast majority of issues and made it a great game.

Blizzard needs to learn to not screw their launches up so badly as they'll never live it down.

Don't just jump on the whole Diablo 3 hate train and believe Torchlight 2 is far superior, because it's not really the case.

They are both great games but one is considerably cheaper and that will come at a noticeable difference in overall quality. So take that into consideration.

I would say go for Torchlight 2... Its a better Diablo game then Diablo 3 now dont take it the wrong way... I know they have done somethings that improved Diablo 3 abit... But in my opinion it did not fix the core issues: Items, Skills and how the scale, Blizzards "NERF EVERYTHING" mentality. Also the story is so... Meh... Its like watching a cartoon "I activate my super ability of dooooom *evil laugh*" Wait... Why would you say what you are going to do :(?

i dont agree with this. TL2 went for an art style and nailed it. There is nothing wrong with the quality. The only thing D3 has that TL2 doesnt is better cutscenes. Which is quite laughable when D3 probably had 100 times the budget of TL2.

I wan't to believe this, I really do. I just can't, Diablo 2 had its flaws at launch but from the get go you knew this was a good game and was only going to get better with patches.

Diablo 3 was terrible, I finished the game not because I enjoyed it, but because I kept telling myself that the next Act will be better, that there is a hidden quality somewhere in the later levels. I never found it, uninstalled and it would take almost a complete overhaul for me to get back in.

I am enjoying TL2 much more than D3. I find I had to force myself to play D3 to get to inferno. With TL2 I am having fun building my character. Plus with no AH looting is how its supposed to be.

Anything but D3, trust me, if you enjoyed D2 or D1 for that matter, D3 is insulting
