I just built a new quad core with 4g of ram and I heard only the 64 bit version of windows xp can fully utilize it. I was just simply looking for a link to a 64 bit version of xp with sp2 (preferably home, but either way), but I can't figure out which version of windows at amazon/tiger direct/ zipzoomfly I need

a link to which version of XP im looking for would be greatly appriciated

I don't know, I've heard bad things about the 64-bit version of XP. If you do get a 64-bit OS I recommend Vista, but if you get a 32-bit version (which only supports 3.2GB of RAM) then get XP Professional.

Compatibility problems mostly, I've heard that not many programs have been written for the 64-bit version of XP, and that drivers are hard to come by. Don't take my word for it though because I don't have any first hand knowledge of these problems.

I agree with everything General says. I have used XP 64, and really hated the experience. Drivers sucked, applications didn't perform well, gaming was bad. I have Vista 64, and love it.

Thoses were my experiences as well. Now I tried XP 64 quite a while ago, so it could be just fine now. But so far Vista 64 has been good to me.

I'd just stick with a 32-bit OS. Sure, you lose out on a bit of RAM right now (not that you'll ever use that much unless you're doing semi-professional art or more advanced stuff), and upgrade to a 64-bit OS when they work out a few more kinks. Or you know, just get 2GB of RAM.

With a 512MB graphics card, him having 3.5GB of RAM free is a rather high estimate.
