I am trying to run Age of Conan and already updated my video card to a NVidia GeForce 8500 GT , and its still running slow, not even slow, its like a slide show with all the settings as low as they go. Here is my system, i am hoping I just need more ram, but let me know what you think.

AMD's Athlon 64 X2 3800+ dual-core processor

250 GB hard drive

1 GB installed RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT 1 GB DDR2

8500gt isn't a proper gamers card.

At least 2GB ram is necessary for AoC.

And you better hope the HDD is 7200rpm.

Also.. note that the game performed bad on my Q6600 and 8800GTS 512mb.

I switched to the 169.21 drivers for XP, and the perfomances was boosted up significantly.

There are some spooky things going with that game, technical mysterious issues. The ran terrible for me on shader model 2.0... and better at shader model 3.0. Don't know what caused it, but those drivers fixed the problem for me.

Don't take my word for it, there is no guarantee that it will fix it for you. Your problem is probably the system itself.

8500gt pretty much sucks for gaming. Try an 8800gs or 8600gt/2600xt if you have a low budget.

So what is the easiest and cheapest thing to do, throw another GB of ram in there? I can't exactly go out and buy another video card since I just put this one in and can't return it now. Is the main problem just the ram, or is it my processor?

actually I just downloaded Cpu-z and my processor is 4200+ not 3800+ if that makes any difference at all.

And also when I had the new video card installed it looks like they didn't take the old one out, because on the mainboard it says Chipset NVIDIA 6150 LE Southbridge says NVIDIA nforce 410/430 MCP

totally confused.....

sorry for all the questions, but I have no idea what Im doing.

But when I see that for the mainboard it still says the old graphics card does that mean it is still running off of that card and not the new one???

graphics card is the biggest thing in your computer. you could have the new intel extreme edition, 8 gigs of the best ram you could get your hands on, but with that graphics card, its a huge bottleneck and wont help anything.

i have been in your situation years before, you want someone to answer " your graphics card is fine, insert cheap solution here" , but sorry bro thats not the truth, your going to need to upgrade that thing.

The 9600 is looking deeply promising at the minute....

Anyway, shadows and draw distances I usually find cause the most lag issues in games.
Also, check your character LOD distance with character draw distance, and make sure LOD is equal or lower. Im not sure about performance impact, but it sure doesn't make sense to have LOD higher.

Oh, and have more RAM.

but the thing I don't understand is I read all these other forums of people running this game on high settings with cheaper graphics cards than mine, and I can't even play the game on the lowest of low settings, it just doesn't make sense.

They're all massive fat liars I'm obliged to inform you :)

I have a 7900GTX (better than the 8600s and below), and I have mid-low (like, 80% low) settings. So errrr...yeah, they're lying if they tell you they play high on cheaper cards.

But like some of the others have said, mysterious technical issues with higher settings (maybe I should try that :P).

We all gotta start somewhere, it took me ages to work out what 'imo' meant :)

LOD means "level of detail" - it's the distance where the computer starts to draw proper textures in, or - in games such as supreme commander - it represents the zoom level at which you can see debris and such.
