Hey all,

I have a friend overseas that doesn't have a gaming PC (just a normal PC), and that also doesn't have time to sit down and do a proper gaming session (on top of that the time difference is difficult).

We normally play Chess by turn, but we are a bit over it so I wanted to ask if there are any games out there, either on PC or on mobiles, which let you play your turn and then wait for the other turn? ie, both players don't have to be online at the same time.

I know there are things like Scrabble, Word with Friends, Draw Something etc... but I'm looking for something more strategic and not so board game like.

Cheers

Maybe looks like a something like Hero Academy and Carcassonne. I think they both have the option you are looking for.

These are both for mobile devices.

Check out Planetarion. It's a browser-based game of galactic conquest. Very team(alliance)-oriented.

Me and a group of friends have been playing it since the early 2000s.

You should try Frozen Synapse. It's a great tactical turn-based game that's really competitive tense and engaging. Pretty sure that if you buy one copy, you get another to give to your friend too. It's play-by-email is internal and you can take turns with notifications.

Frozen Endzone is another, it's only in Early Access phase on Steam but it's the same developers as Frozen Synapse. It's a futuristic tactical turn-based sports game inspired by Gridiron with robots; if that makes much sense. It has play-by-email and likewise to frozen synapse, you buy one copy and you get another for a friend.

I always thought Civ 5 should have a mobile app with the simple hex grid yield icon UI that sends your moves to a dedicated server and keeps you updated so you can play a game with friends leisurely over a week rather than an entire night. Somebody needs to get on this!

There's a game I used to play in high-school called Neptune's Pride. I thought there were some balancing issues with weird starts, but it is like a simpler version of Sins of a Solar Empire. It takes a few hours to build fleets/do research/send ships to stars so you can just check back every so often.
