Hey all,

I'm currently doing my second playthrough of Eschalon: Book I. I have Book: II ready to be played, but I'm newish to this genre of games. I usually spend all my time playing normal RPG's. So I'm just wondering, if people could throw out some suggestions of what games they love in this genre as I'm really into them. But I'm looking to have good customisation, with both stats. Visible weapon and armor changes, as some games don't change the sprite's apparel. A half decent story and great gameplay.

Hope to get some decent suggestions as I'll be checking some of them out.

Chronic

EDIT: For the record, I'm not particularly fond of party based games, but they're fine. I'm also looking for something relatively recent, as I've played through Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, so on and so forth. I've definitely hit and played the more "well known" ones, but still, throw some of these my way, just incase i've passed them or forgotten about them!

It's party based but Temple of Elemental Evil is one of the best turn based D&D games out there. Awesome customization, tons of equipment to find/craft, lots of monsters to kill, and nice amount of stuff to explore. I'd recommend grabbing it off of gog.com and then heading over to the Co8 forums to grab their damn near essential content/bug community patch. For something maybe a bit different I'd also recommend Silent Storm.

While technically not a RPG, your squad does level up and you can equip them with various weapons and skills. The destructible environments still look awesome imo. Highly overlooked gem.

You mentioned Eschalon Book I so I'd naturally recommend Book II if you haven't played it already.

The new King's Bounty series might be worth looking at as well. While it's more of a tactics game, it does have character development with full skill trees and a nice magic system. Tons of loot to find and places to explore. You wouldn't think it, but KB does scratch that RPG itch fairly well. I highly recommend the game, really fantastic.

Anyways good luck with finding something, it's one of my favorite genre's but they just don't make games like that anymore (much)...and you are going to have an even harder time finding something more recent that's not party based.

Ah! I knew this would end up popping up! I bought this game at release and played the crap out of it! It is indeed an overlooked gem that I enjoyed very much, played both with and without the CoE mod. Brilliant game, shame games these days don't really live up to the standards of old classics like this! Thanks for the recommendation, hopefully someone will use this thread and stumble across this game and take a look at it!

I was looking at this on GoG. But as I'm out of work at the moment I was looking for something a little cheaper, although it's not that expensive anyway and I'm just being tight with my money. I probably go and pick it up before the day ends. I'll also take a peek at Silent Storm on Youtube and see what I think.

Cheers again buddy!

No problem :)

Anyways the GOTY edition for it is $5 on amazon (direct download):

http://www.amazon.com/Kings-Bounty-Princess-Crossworlds-Download/dp/B0042AMMCI/ref=sr_1_83_bnp_0?s=videogames-download&ie=UTF8&qid=1335387994&sr=1-83&tag=isthcom0a-20

That includes Armored Princess and the Crossworlds expansion.

SCRATCH THAT!

The platinum edition is also $5 from the same place, but also includes The Legend:

That's only available in America I think, I'm in the UK unfortunately! I'll look though and see if I'm right. Thanks though.

I think you are still good, I went to:

http://isthereanydeal.com/

Changed region to UK and they were both 3.06. I can't click the link to the amazon page though since amazon automatically adjusts which site I view.

Currently looking on Amazon now, I'll let you know in a second, thanks for checking out for me.

EDIT: Nope, I can't find the download section on games on the UK version of Amazon. Real shame! Cheers though man. When I went on "IsThereAnyDeal" It keeps throwing me onto the US Site of Amazon, so that's a no go I'm afraid, unless I'm screwing up.

Just go to the isthereanydealsite I posted above, type in "king's bounty" into the filter box, then click the amazon link for the platinum version.

*edit*

Oh ok, only think i would check is down below on the isthereanydeal site to make sure you have your region set to UK. You will know if it's the correct site if it's listing the correct currencies.

Done that buddy. Just keeps throwing me onto the US Site. I'm pretty sure I tried before to download a game, but it wasn't available to do it on Amazon in my region. Which is a little sucky. And yep. The region is set to UK.

I love turn based RPGs too. (not a fan of jrpgs though) And to me, they are the 'normal' ones, while these new hybrids play too much like action games. Unfortunately, in most all of them the gameplay isn't as good as a real action games. At least if they're gonna homogenize the genre like that, give us some actual decent combat like in Dark Souls or Severance, say. Anyway, here's some suggestions.

D&D Gold Box Games & the 2 Gold Box Buck Rogers games

Temple of Elemental Evil (Co8 mod)

Dark Sun D&D games

Wizardry series (especially 6-8)

Jagged Alliance 2 (and the 1.13 mod)

Knights of the Chalice

Realms of Arkania series

Dark Heart of Uukrul

Betrayal at Krondor

D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun

Earlier Might & Magic and Ultima games had turn based combat

Awesome! Cheers for the suggestions! I have played most of them out the D&D Box. Played ToEE. Heard of Wizadry but never checked them out. Never played Jagged Alliance, KNights of the Chalice, Realms of Arkania, Dark Heart of Uukrul, Betrayal at Krondor, or D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun. But I have played the whole M&M and Ultima series! I'll be sure to check out the ones that you've mentioned and I've not played. Thank you so much!

EDIT: I have played Knights of the Chalice, it wasn't my kind of game unfortunately!

@Revenent42: I looked at Silent Storm for the last 20 mins or so on YT. Not what I'm looking for. More into the whole swords and shield business. Cheers for the suggestion though buddy.

How could I leave off Fallout 1 & 2 from that list ?

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura also has a turn based mode, btw,

FYI, you can take a party straight through Wizardry 6-8, importing them from one game to the next.

Played both Fallout I and II. I have a hell of a lot of games on GoG.com! Also played Arcanum too. I'll need to take a closer look at Wizardry too. Finished Legend of Grimrock. It was a really brilliant game, looking forward to some user made content for it!

Maybe check out Grotesque Tactics: Evil Heroes. I don't think there was much visual customization when I played, but the gameplay itself is fantastic and I love the humour.

Spiderweb Software makes old school RPGs. These are indie games, no amazing graphics or anything, but good gameplay and good story.

http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/products.html

They are shareware if you get them directly from their site (that link). You download the free demo and can pay for the rest whenever you want. No time limits, limited exploration. The newer ones are also available on Steam. Steam version has achievements if you want those, but of course developer makes more money if you buy direct.

@ Bussinrounds: I've played a bunch of these types of games. I like them, but not looking for that type of game at the moment, but I can use the list as future reference if I need a new one to pass the time, so thank you. @James00715 : Cheers for the link, I'll take a look at it.
