Ok, so my TV only has component and composite inputs, no HMDI. Above the Component inputs is says "1080i". I don't see anything about 720p or 1080p. So I'm assuming I can only run my PS3 in 1080i or 480p. In the resolution settings I tried selecting only 480p and 720p and the screen went blank (confirming that assumption I think). But a game like Elder Scrolls: Oblivion has a max res. of 720p (can't run in 1080i or 1080p).

Does this mean I have to run the game in 480p standard def?

Do component cables make the quality better in 480p than composite cables?

A lot of PS3 games have a max resolution of 720p, so what do I do for those games to maximize quality?

I had this problem with my toshiba. The ps3 will play them at 480p. Unless this has been changed with a update (haven't used that set up for 2 years). You need the blue, grean, red to get even 480p.

I should get a TV that supports 720p then, because most PS3 games run best in 720p.

Yes it is time to upgrade. I had an older hdtv that only supported 1080i and 480p back when ps3 first came out. had the same issue you did, the fact is you have to get an new tv or play xbox 360 because it will scale to any resolution you want it to. Its sad to say as far more advance the ps3 is they kinda neglected this issue but the 360 didn't.

If the game is unable to up-res to 1080i, it will be dropped back to 480p. This is a limitation of the PS3. Sorry.

Component cables will be better than composite cables. With composite, you can only get 480i, whereas with component, you will get 480p and 1080i.

My TV does the same, but it automatically converts 720p too 1080. It doesn't look that great compared to native 1080i, but I think the majority of older HDtvs do this.

When I set up my PS3 on that tv it automatically is set to 480i unless I change the resolution settings. So I should change it to 480p? Thanks for all the responses.
