Hey, I was wondering about HDMI in a PC, I plan on using my TV as my PC monitor in the future, and to output higher resolutions than 1024*768 on the TV I need to hook the TV up to my PC through HDMI and I had a question about choosing proper components to do this. Now The big question for me is what kind of Video card/mobo am I gonna need to do this? I don't plan on doing this for a few months so I really don't need any links to specific hardware I just need to know what I should be looking for. I'm pretty clueless, I have tried looking on my own and found no answer, so any help would be appreciated.

depends on your TV and what you plan on doing. If you have a large LCD capable of 19x12 1080p and are going to play Crysis on it, you might want to get some high end gear. give us more info about your intentions and current setup and we can help point you in a better direction.

currently i have this TV

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-2S1WPHHtkEW/p_305LN46530/Samsung-LN46A530.html?tab=review

and i use this video card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130442

to connect it using the PC input (not HDMI, i take care of audio seperately)

You don't necessarily need a HDMI out on your PC to connect with the HDMI in on your TV, A DVI connection is the same as a HDMI connection just no sound. You can get a DVI to HDMI adapter or cable to connect your PC to a TV and then connect the audio separately. When it comes to choosing what video card or mobo you need to ask your self what you plan on doing. How much do you want to spend? Are you planing on getting a BluRay Drive to watch movies on? Do you want to play highend games? Personally I have a HTPC case, bluRay Drive, running off a GT260 displaying on a 67" 1080p screen and its great for everything and fits well in the living room. Post what you want to do and I will suggest some stuff.

You paid all that money for that screen and that graphics card and you are running it through VGA?!!?!?! Do yourself a favor and spend the a few bucks on this - DVI to HDMI cable and if you want sound out of the TV get this Audio Y Cable Splitter 1-Mini Plug/2-RCA Plugs Plug the video cable it into HDMI port 2 and the audio into the audio port next to it labled DVI-in/HDMI (the port next to it). Your video quality and color will improve noticeably. Running through VGA is somewhat equivalent to running your screen through S-video cable, not good especially when you could be at full HDMI quality.

im getting married, $100 dollar HDMI cables aren't in my budget at the moment. especially not when i can pump the audio directly out of my sound card to my surround sound system. when cost isnt prohibitive, (ever try telling your fiance that a 100 dollar cable is worth spending the money on over a wedding costs?) anymore. im not going to toss money at converters or splitters either, when down the road im just going to go HDMI anyway.

First off, congrats. Second off I don't think you understand, DVI IS HDMI, just minus the sound and a different shape connector. You have a DVI out on your video card, you have a HDMI in on the TV, the cable I linked you to is a 9 dollar DVI to HDMI cable. You just plug it in and you are golden, it will really improve the picture quality. The way you have it setup now is CONVERTING it down to VGA quality from HDMI/DVI quality. You spent quite a bit on that card, and running it through VGA is kinda like buying a Ferrari and then buying the cheapest possible tires and gas for it, your not really taking full advantage.

This guy is right, you've got top of the line hardware and you're TV can't display it, such a waste and all you need to do is spend a little bit of money on adapters.

Hm, that answered my question perfectly. I have an LCD with a native Resolution of 720p and can show up to 1080i, I plan on using it to show 1920x1080i resolution. I will have some powerful hardware so that isn't any problem. So All I need is a DVI to HDMI and I'm set? Sounds good, much easier then I thought. Thanks.

Listen to this guy, I used VGA for quite some time, until I got a DVI-HDMI adapter for like 20-30 bucks and boy was the quality EXTREMELY noticeable. It's pretty much running at much higher resolutions, because the VGA refused to output a higher res than 1280 or so. Now I'm displaying @ 1360X768

I'm not familiar with the cable the other posters are telling you to get but monoprice.com has the best prices on cables. I got a 6' hdmi cable from there for only a couple dollars and it works perfectly. Check it out at their site.
