Sometimes I want to hook up the PC to the TV via HDMI and play some games in 1080p. Are there certain TV brands or models to avoid? And what are ideal TVs to consider? I'm looking for a 40inch and considering Samsung or LG. I guess LED.

Honestly look at the reviews, both professional and consumer ones.. One of the biggest things is when you get this tv that you look for a online guide in properly calibrating it.. Having incorrect settings like setting the color range in hdmi settings to full instead of limited (when your tv can't do it) can wash out the colors and make the image look awful..

@locus-solus: What is an acceptable input lag? I'm not a hardcore FPS guy so I don't get uptight if there is some input lag. Though, I don't play FPS on TVs via controller. Just K/M

I have one of PC's that I use to game hooked up to my 60" Samsung Plasma. I would consider Samsung as I believe they have one of the best picture quality and is the best regarding price/performance. LG is good too. But Samsung I think is the best with respect to the quality and the price you get it at.

I got a new 55 inch panasonic plasma st50 for 1400 (4 year warranty) a couple years ago and I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed this tv. The picture is fantastic, 3d is awesome, I can even convert 2d to 3d which isn't that bad either but not near as good as 3d blu rays etc. Gaming runs flawlessly, input lag is non existent, image retention I don't have an issue with, if I play something for a month strait and only do that I might have a little but it goes away fairly quick as long as I switch the content

Hope this helps!

I bought a used but still very good Samsung LCD 40inch from someone. There are certain games where it's amazing on a 40inch in my bedroom. I tried Grid Autosport, Bioshock Infinite and they look amazing. The colors really pop out. But Witcher 3 doesn't look as good for some reason. MGS 5 is fine.

Sadly, I think I'll have to sell it and get a 32 Inch LED because the TV is too big for my bedroom and viewing vision. I'm about 8-10 feet from the TV on my bed and my eyes strain a bit

do a search for sites that report response time and input lag on tvs. heres a site for example. http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-test-results/input-lag

with a tv of only 40 inches i would imagine your input lag to be reasonable compared to a larger 60+ inch, but do some quick research to be sure. I have a 60 inch panasonic plasma tv, and while its great for tv, there is a slight delay i notice when moving my mouse around on the screen compared to my smaller 27 inch monitor. When i was looking into maybe buying an ultra wide lg monitor earlier this year i noticed this also that the larger 30+ inch version of the same monitor had a slightly larger response time of about 10 ms more, so keep that in mind also that the larger the screen will sometimes increase response time.

Its a strange thing, because i have a much older 42 inch samsung plasma tv and its response times are near non existent and i don't notice any mouse lag on it, even though its almost 6 years older than my 60 inch plasma.

Theres no way to know for sure as this isn't always the case, thats why you should check out these sites that do tests to measure the response times.
