What resolution do you run?
Unless you game at 2560x1600, the 512MB of RAM on the HD4870 CF setup should be enough. If however you do game at 2560x1600 (or close to it), then I do suggest waiting for the HD4870 X2, as each GPU has access to 1GB of RAM (2 x 1GB, but still effectively 1GB).
If I am right the x2 is cheaper and faster. Plus you can crossfire the x2 later on.jjj13
Im pretty sure the X2 is faster, and most def cheaper. So HD 4870 X2 ftw.
It probably uses less power and less micro-stuttering. :]
4870x2 has BETTER perfomance then xfire 4870 and is cheaper then xfire 4870. PointedCow
At 2560x1600 it does by a good degree. At 1920x1200 it does not. With a suggested retail of greater than 500, and most figure 550, it is not that much better than two 4870's. I paid 576 with tax for both of my 4870's and 25 bucks isnt that big of a deal.
At 1920x1200 everyone is showing the 4870x2 and 4870CF are pretty much even and most times it is within a few frames or LESS. 4870 CF also has the ability to make after market cooling much easier than the x2. You will be able to OC the 4870CF on air better than the x2 unless you want to start modding coolers and jerry rig something up.
The 4870x2 is NOT a clear winner outside of 2560x1600. It OWNS that resolution when it comes to ATI cards. However 1920x1200 it is matched evenly overall with 4870CF, and maybe beaten, if you use 3rd market coolers and highly OC the 4870's. Variables exist here.
The microstuttering tests done by Sampa on xtremesystems shows the HD48xx series, be it 4870CF or 4870x2, are about the same in the microstuttering, as in he says they are fixed on both setups.

So basically, we should wait for the HD 4870x2 in quadfire. :D

Hey if you play at 256x1600 then go for it!
I am just content with my 4870 CF overall. Anyone who wants to buy it for 1680x1050 or so can. Not gonna tell anyone they cant or shouldnt outright. Just saying there are really no benefits.

I dont know if my eyesight is bad or not but I dont see a difference between 1440 and 1680 res, all on Very High. Maybe it's just me. And I dont see a difference in 19x12 either. I have yet to try anything higher, because my monitor does not support it.

Which is why the 4870x2 at 1920x1200 isnt any better than 4870CF. The only reason for crossfire on the 4870 is for when you want 1920x1200 AND high AA/AF.
Or do you mean how it looks? Well the benefit of 1920x1200 is that you wont notice jagged edges as much and naturally there is more to the screen. On a mmorpg on a pvp server it helps me watch my back alittle more.
