Everyone in that clip was an idiot. Trya, the big girl, the doctor, the guy for ignoring his kid. Not much on tv anymore no? Tyra should stop trying to be the next oprah. Back on track though, this is another example on how consuming a game WOW is. Balance is everything.

I agree. Not only does this guy have some brains, common sense and heart, but that showed true wisdom and character; and the gift of "self control" not the curse of "being controlled." For all those (with wives and/or girlfriends) who may be thinking what I think you're thinking...there's a big difference between being "whipped" and caring about the one you "proclaim" to love.

Good points.

And lets also remember that there is a difference between being addicted and obsessed.  I still think that there is no way you can get addicted to something like WoW or a video game.  The symptoms may be similiar to addiction, but the main difference is that with obsession you can easily replace that object, whereas with addiction it is extremely hard to replace that object of addiction.

I think playing WoW is fine but if he left her when she was having a baby I'd get on the computer, delete his characters, uninstall it, cancel the subscrition and snap the disc. But seriously if he is sleeping on the couch then WoW doesn't seem to be the real problem here. :?

Haha, yeah.

Really I think these things are hilarious..  I can see it now they come back 4 months later, and now the wife is playing the game lol..  This reminds me of what one of my good friends told me about one of his co-workers at his work.. Apparently co-worker and his Girl friend both asked for 2 weeks off on the release of Burning Crusade..

I don't see a proplem with myself enjoying video games while working 56+ hrs a week.. I find it cheaper than going to bars and trying to pick up women who end up looking for one thing.. the size of your bank account, oh and the shallow part.. your apperance.. (as if it wasn't shallow enough with the $ ). I work more than 40+hrs a week have enough money to do as I please and own my own place etc.. I do not have the responsibility of having children or a wife.. so what is SO WRONG about playing 8hrs a day? If it wasn't that, I would be watching TV for 8hrs a day.. since I own quite a DVD collection. Besides having Direct TV. If not that.. I could listen to Music all day.. for 8hrs.or read books for 8hrs.. (I also have quite a few books I have yet to read.. bought but never read.. they just sit there.. waiting).. The same goes for most of my games.. a ton just sit there waiting to be played.
If video games did not occupy my "free time" I would have spent it doing something less "productive" like the aformentioned things.

BTW, how many hours a day do you check these forums Lonehawk? I think your internet addicted.. :P

I can't believe that guy missed the birth of his child to play WoW... that's a new low. The wife's pretty good looking, she did gain some weight when she had the kid, but it's not like she can't lose it again if she has motivation! :)

WOW (pun intended), you should really chill out man. I must agree that 8 hours a day i a bit much. If i play for 4 hours, that's usually enough for me.

Now to the point, unlike the guy in that video you don't have a kid or a wife so a direct comparison between your situation and his is not valid. He should be taking care of his wife/kid rather than playing with his dark mage elf and casting spells for 8 hours a day.

As for the addiction part, as someone pointed out earlier it is impossible to be addicted to a video game. Although addiction to drugs and games likely originates from the same brain regions which may suggest that the two are similar (the euphoria that you get), there isn't a physical substance that you are addicted to when games are concerned. You can easily walk away from a game for a month, can't say the same thing about heroin though.

Just adds to the point of how much WOW blows. Too many people get wrapped up in that game. It's wierd though how most other mmorpg's don't have the addiction level that WOW does.

True, I do NOT have those responsibilities.. and if I did, I would take care of those FIRST. But Tyra did mention that "gaming is a problem". And you have to say that Video games have come under fire moreso now than ever before. This is due to the avg age of a gamer steadily rising as well as new "recruits" joining the ranks. If I an adult choose to play video games all day long.. that is MY choice.. and no one not even the President has the right to take that away from me. I know I sound a little selfish and a bit shallow.. but I find gaming a worthy hobby and not "just for kids". I am chilled out.. I just find it hypocritical for someone to say "man that guy has issues when most of us have issues since we check these GS forums with such regularity. Anything can become an addiction.. this is true.. from shopping, to watching TV, to any hobby that you can think of. It CAN be taken to the extreme and burn away your social life, etc. That is why there is something called moderation. I play games because I don't feel like going out and spending more money. If I were to go out to a restraunt that I enjoy.. I could easily accumulate a check of 50 bucks.. (sushi is expensive), combine that with some saki and a main course of steak and lobster tail.. and your pretty much 50 bucks in.. ;)

A game bought can last me a good week.. at the price of 50 bucks.. expensive? I think not..but I digress, I have gotten off the subject and went to other rants I find daily on these boards.. like the "gaming is too expensive" arguments.. If I sounded "non mellow" when I type.. then I apologize.. it is just how strong I feel about the issue being discussed.. If you cannot handle my responses.. just ignore em.. it isn't too difficult to not read every post. ;)

But I do agree with you on the responsibility as well as well as the addictive aspect :)

Im sure the guy was laughing inside when they were destroying the cd's

*These people are soooo clueless that they dont know I can play the game without the cds*

If they really wanted to do something, they should of made him delete his account right there. Then you would of seen him taken back, and he probably wouldn't of done it. Probably would of broken out in a cold sweat.

wow I can't believe most of you people are agreeing with that fat **** (The wife if you didn't notice) okay I know he missed the birth, but god damnit he only played for 1 hour adn 30 min and she's complaining. If she wants him to notice her, lose a few pounds. And Yeah he didn't pay attention to the baby  he knew his wife was behind him "taking care" of the baby.....by video cameraing it.

Some of you need to learn the definition of addiction before you go around saying it's impossible to become addicted to anything other than physical substances. You can become "addicted" to anything.

There are two types of addiction -- physiological (chemical) and psychological. Drug abusers are obviously the prior, and are typically a combination of both. It is possible to have a psychological addiction to something without physiologic dependency. A better definition of "addiction" would be the repeated use of substances or participation in behaviors despite clear problems secondary to the use or participation. I would say obsessively playing WoW while ignoring your wife and child fits this category.

True, but when does a definition become to broad? Addicted to collecting stamps.. addicted to fixing up cars, addicted to the "one eyed monster". Frankly, we use that word "addiction" too often to explain a host of things.. "Obsessive" would be another word that would fit and isn't "overused". True it is a synonym of the word, but at least things aren't always attributed to just one definition.. I guess I don't really know the word addiction except for those substances that cause dependancy.. like smoking.

What I posted was the definition of addiction according to the DSM-IV, not Webster's Dictionary. The DSM uses very strict clinical parameters and is what psychologists and psychiatrists used to dx conditions in clinic. The key factor seperating obsession and addiction is the part about ignoring secondary morbidities (although clinical obsession is something of a different beast and is related to anxiety)

There seem to be very different meanings in the layman's definition of addiction, which typically IS obession or participation in an event to an extreme. Clinical addiction has the other factor I mentioned above.

So yeah, you are probably correct that the general public use addiction too generally, probably using it interchangeably with obsession, when in reality actual addiction is pretty different. I have noticed the public tends to use misnomers quite a bit. :D

I also meant to add that MMORPG-related addiction is still in the research stage and is not currently recognized, as far as I know, to be a clinical addiction. However, the APA is updating the DSM in version V to include all manner of addiction, which will encompass everything from substance abuse to MMORPG addiction.

It's also important to keep in mind that psychology/psychiatrist is a little over 200 years old; an infant in terms of science and medicine. There is a lot we don't know and understand, and much to still be learned.

There was a really good website out there from a PhD candidate who did research on EverQuest players and their addiction. I will post the link once I find it.

[QUOTE="REX3453"]wow I can't believe most of you people are agreeing with that fat **** (The wife if you didn't notice) okay I know he missed the birth, but god damnit he only played for 1 hour adn 30 min and she's complaining. If she wants him to notice her, lose a few pounds. And Yeah he didn't pay attention to the baby he knew his wife was behind him "taking care" of the baby.....by video cameraing it. REX3453

I can see that you will never get married if you think you can miss your childs birth because you wanted to play video games.

I don't want to get married, I frankly hate kids, they never shut up, they are money sink holes, and etc. And I stated yeah he missed the birth, that is low.

Actually the girl did say he got back in time for the birth of the child.

But still i mean you don't just leave your wife like that in time of need thats horrible and i'm sure he probably ignored that kid all the time if hes not gonna get his priorities straight then she should leave him

[QUOTE="DGFreak"]This is unrelated, but I like that case in your specs sig. I've got NZXT's Nemesis pro or whatever case. They're a good make.

Thanks, i love the case and the 4 fans really keep it cool and surprisingly quiet.

You sir are correct. My comment was merely alluding to chemical addiction as a "real" addiction in comparison to video games since it is known that drug abuse is associated with elevated levels of dopamine, which perpetuates a positive feedback loop that enforces your addiction to a drug. It is likely that extreme "addiction" to video games will elicit similar physiological responses but with a lower magnitude than let's say heroin. However, I still hold to my opinion that most gamers, even those of us who sometimes play for many hours when a new game comes out, can easily stop playing when and if it is necessary.

Well... I know you didnt mean anything bad by it, but you should know addiction to a video game IS real. The difference is that your body isnt being stimulated by an outside chemical like in drugs, smoking, or food, but rather your bodies own chemicals, endorphins and seratonin. These chemicals are what trigger you to feel happy, and when we find things in life that consistently release these chemicals... naturally we are going to form a habit to it. Make no mistake, thats addiction. These reactions happening behind the scenes in your body is what physically makes an addiction hard to break. Obsession encompasses a broader idea, but its just a mental attachment without the bodily reactions. it cant always be replaced. If your obsessed with a certain person, as a love interest maybe... a different person isnt going to cut it. At least not until you get over your obsession. Just an example.

I think that he meant his wife, not tyra. Tyra is too much of a bimbo for me so i'd pick WoW if i actually liked it.

I was skeptical before but....geez. How can you find the time to play that much? The reason I find myself playing WoW is because I enjoy it. I still buy the odd other game now and again like gears of war, but they never hold my interest. If you really like WoW it's not like you can buy another game and play that. And WoW takes a lot of time, even in PvP.

When the councelor said he was happy with his willingness etc, I bet what was running through the player's head was "OMG if he vendored all my epix I'm gonna kill him on this show"....
Then the guy was like "this is a shredder" and the player was thinking haha these dumbasses don't know I still have my account" with a cheeky quiet grin on his face.
