An article about how Ubisoft how launched its own program to counter Steam and Origin

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-08-16-ubisoft-launches-uplay-pc-digital-distribution-platform

Great. Another one to worry about.

Miss the days where you could just install the game and play it within minutes.

More competition, even from a company I do not necessarily adore, is a good thing.

Competition for what though? I mean its more of a question of convenience than anything else. Yet another program you're going to have to log into.

Digital Platform, the only problem is Steam was the only major client for such a long time. I honestly don't think steam can be touched unless you want to take a loss on every game you sell by undercutting then by a major amount.

More is always better, plus a $1 dollar game sale is a great way to draw some attention

Steam won't be going away anytime soon, but I am often surprised when PC gamers say that they want to buy games from only vendor (i.e., Steam), in the same way that console gamers have to deal with only Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo when buying digital content for their consoles. Openness and the ability for any player to come in with their own marketplace is what makes PC gaming unique.

Oh great, another account + pass to remember.

I love Steam but this client DRM is starting to piss me off. I miss the good old days when we could just insert a CD Key at installation or when the game first launched and then you could play a game without starting a client (Steam, Origin or now Uplay).

Centralization and ease of use comes at a price. Your freedom, of course.

I hope this is the case, but if they follow Origin, it'll just monopolize digital distribution of their games. I have yet to see a good sale from EA's Origin. Hopefully, Ubisoft will do a better job at attracting gamers than EA has.

I don't mind Steam because it has so many other uses. Friends list, stores, a huge selection of games but yeah its yet another password to remember AND they're only just launching this so the chances are high that they'll have a lot of work to do to catch up to Steam and Origin. I'm really over it.

True.

Hopefully Ubisoft doesn't do an Origin and removes their most recent games from Steam.

Unlike the obnoxious Valve fanboys, I don't b*tch and moan whenever a new client like this comes to the market, but Ubisoft aren't exactly known for taking care of PC gamers.

Was that really necessary? I think Valve is the toast of this industry but thats not why I don't like having to sign up regularly to new services.

Its a matter of inconvenience and it doesn't seem necessary.

Yes it was necessary. I'd rather not have any of these client DRM programs, the only time I use them is if one of them has a really good sale or if I need to use it for a game. But if we have to have one, there's no reason we shouldn't have multiple.

You could have said that without insulting people and if you're only using it on the occasion that a game requires I think you'll be using it a lot more then. So you better get used to it mister! How far do you stretch it though? Would you really support say one program for each company? That is the way that it is heading unfortunately.

No the people who refuse to buy games that aren't on steam are the problem. Competition is always better. If steam turns in a monoply they have no need for steam sales, no need for anything as they would control the entire market, something that are getting to close to doing.

I don't think insulting some Valve fanboys will stop me from sleeping well tonight... It's just amusing how games have been requiring Steam to run for years, but when it was announced Origin would be required to run BF3, these stupid hypocrites behaved as if it was the worst thing to ever happen to gaming.

I don't see anything wrong with this. More options and competition are good. Just don't pull off their games on other DD services. And running one DRM only is better than running two DRMs unless you're hardcore Steam fanboy who doesn't know there are other DD services have better deal than Steam.

There were a number of legitimate reasons for that: It came well after Steam and is being used for a very select group of games. Steam has a massive library and won't be going anywhere. I guess that safety net wasn't guaranteed when Origin started and people were also worried about running in the browser. Also, those EA games available on Steam were suddenly taken off and people didn't know why. Origin is decent but it still has a lot of catching up to do. I don't mind using Steam and Origin but yet another one is to come?!

Ubisoft is pretty terrible about honesty in advertising and their use of DRM, but you can't argue too much with $1 games. I recommend everyone lamenting not having passwords to remember to look into a program like Keypass.

It logged me in automatically because I already have ass creed and other ubisoft games on my computer. Pretty simple. I don't get why you need to worry about it, either you use it or not.

Store seems a lot better than Origin

While I'm not a huge fan of Ubisoft, I've never really had a problem with any of their games. $1 Driver SF is enough for me to at least use their system once.

Bleah...anyhow Uplay is a piece of crap at this moment...i have a bunch of Ubi games installed on my PC(some Uplay enabled some older)but i only see one game in my Uplay library...i have no problem to start them via steam or direct from the folders were they are installed...but to compare Uplay with steam or Origin is a freaking joke...Uplay is just a DRM with no other functionality at this moment...unlike Steam(DRM,Social Network, game library that actually works, browser mode, news feed, mod manager, server client,anti-cheat for multiplayer games, voice chat platform, digital store with relevant game titles, etc, etc)

Ubisoft could make every game $1 for the next 5 years and I still wouldn't touch their service. They have done nothing but try to hurt PC gaming and deserve to burn to ther ground for that.

I don't use ubi since their drm went way passed the line for me- requiring always online even for sp- which is the mode I play (sp). They treat PC gamers like myself terrible anyways- noway I'm going back to using their products anytime soon. Been a few years as is. Steam, gog, I don't mind those. Origin/ea can bite me, and ubi too.

I have been gathering that there is a limit for download your games. It seems Ubisoft gives you 30 days for download your games, or if you want to, you can ask for 2 years. Is that true or false?

Edit: That was false. Did some investigations and the 30 days limit is fake. Something that Steam fanboys must have invented.

When will they learn that fragmentation is not good in the PC market. If they want to challenge steam and avoid getting themselves in the same position as the music industry with iTunes then the big publishers should work together as a consortium, Activision + Ubisoft + EA might actually stand a slight chance of surviving.

$1 + the time it takes to play the game + the time it takes to do all the admin + your personal info Unless you're on a really **** wage you're probably paying more in time and data than in cash.

If it offers competing sales, and stuff like Steam does, then I won't turn it away, unless it includes some ridiculous nonsense that the others don't.

At least not for the sake of "not having to remember another username/password." lol There is a notepad on the pc, and a file save option.:P

How many more digital distribution platforms can the market actually stand before the market is saturated and someone has to go under? GOG, Gamersgate, Impulse, Gamefly, Steam, Origin, UPlay, Green Man Gaming, Getgamesgo, Bestbuy, and GFWL are the digital distribution sites I can think of off the top of my head.

right now I have Origin (BF3), Uplay (revelations) , R* social club (GTA4) and steam for everything else. This is getting ridiculous.

LOL no thanks. Ubisoft is the worst. From their terrible games to their terrible DRM. Greedy and crappy company. Shove it Ubisoft!
