"Blizzard's new Battle.net system, launching later this year with StarCraft II, also requires an internet connection, although it does offer an offline mode that only allows you to log in as a guest. With Battle.net, you won't be able to earn achievements or access your SAVE GAMES and player records while offline."

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/acii-pc-requires-internet-connection

While I knew about Ubisofts new anti-piracy measures I didn't realise StarCraft II would also have the same type of drm.

I personally from the first time it was announced from ubisoft I said ok whatever I don't care I'm not going to be bothered by Ubisoft games anymore.

StarCraft II, multiplayer side ok I expect that obviously but this is the first I have heard of this regarding no access to single player save games offline, probably won't stop people buying but just thought what opinions are there on this.

That *may* be a poor choice of wording...and it's possible it's online saves not all saves (like steam cloud)...but even if it's completely true I'd still get Diablo 3 with that DRM. I have broadband and that's not enough to make me miss out on my most anticipated game. And realistically, it wont really be that big of a deal anyways. I think over the course of a year there might be 2-3 times I don't have a internet connection and maybe for an hour or two a time.

I just wanted to correct something. It says th at Battle.net is launching later this year with Starcraft 2 but that is false. Its already launched months and months ago with World of Warcraft. First it was voluntary and now to even play WoW you have to have a Battle.net account set up.

Battle.net client, not the website, the thing that makes War3, Diablo 2 and SC 1 go online and now the SC 2 beta. There is no official announcement about this and I don't believe any of it, the only official statements is that we won't get achievements offline.

Battle.net2 is a fully-fledged network platform. It can also be accessed without having a single Battle.net2-supported game, allows you to store maps online, allows you to play and chat simultaneously, and the games that use B.net2 are all online-centered.

Also, as far as we know (direct quote from a Blizzard's representative) you can play the game offline, Blizzard just doesn't suggest it.

AC2, on the other hand, is a completely single-player experience and the network does not allow you to do anything more than store saved games. I reckon if you aren't connected to the internet you just can't play the game, there's no way around it (for legit customers), if the internet goes off while you're playing, the game will close.

They are not the same type of DRM at all.

Battle.net launched way before WoW. Anyway, on topic - What I find interesting is that I am willing to bet people would accept a net connection required game from Blizzard even while demonizing Ubisoft for the same thing. Ubisoft is making a big mistake (being kicked out of the game if your net connection is interrupted or if ubisoft servers go down/hiccup), but if someone more 'popular' does it then people don't care (people get angry at DRM but accept it if its name is Steam for example). No full details on the new Battle.net are out yet (probably covered by NDA for testers) but the review copies for Ubisoft's new games have been received and the new DRM is raising hackles all over the place.

How about we wait and see first? Starcraft 2 is still months away from release and we don't know everything about how the DRM will work.

It's very simple, really.

B.net2 allows you to play "its" (as far as we know, SC2 for now) games offline, the Ubisoft network (as far as we know, this is only applied to AC2 for now) doesn't.

Blizzard games are commonly known to be extremely multiplayer-centric games, it's natural to be online while playing them.

On the other hand, AC2 is completely single-player, there is absolutely no reason you should be connected to the net.

People "does not care" about Blizzard's DRM because it is not an hassle. It does in no way hinder gameplay.

They are "the same thing" only in literal terms.

whats really bugging me about this system is the whole "need to be connecred the whole time or you get kicked off" thing. most of the time im connected to the internet so making a quick check with a ubi server on starting a game is not a big deal (and if my saves are backed up to a server that i can access on another computer at any time then great). but the reality is that broadband is not 100% reliable...sometimes it goes down and to kick the player off simply becuase their connection drops is just lunacy.

Blizzard has stressed the playability of their game in all conditions. Offline and online. They will not go back on their words.

Correct me if im wrong... But blizzard said you can play single player in Guest Mode but it wont be bound to your Battle.net Account then (no in game chat, server save, achivment system and other services)... So yes if you internet drop you wont be able to get the Single player saves on their server. But if you have saves on your own computer (from "guest") you can use that.

This. Blizzard is not Ubisoft. This is why they make more money. They aren't stupid.

I can't believe I fell for this.

I ended up buying Starcraft 2 today and now I can't return it because I've opened the box. I had no idea you had to have an internet connection just to play this game. I'm so use to the first Starcraft that I didn't even look on the box of it saying that. It's got such tiny print I didn't even know.

I think I'm going to try and talk to a lawyer about this because I sure there are more people like me that just got suckered in on this B.S.

A pure disappointment on Blizzard's behalf.

Learn to read what you're buying before buying it. That's like going into a shop and buying a packet of Peanut M&Ms then suing the M&M company because you thought they were just regular ones. You have nobody to blame for this but yourself. Also, you only need an internet connection to activate the game, after that you can play offline as much as you want.

Good luck with that lawyer thing

I'm sure "I forgot to look on the box" will hold up real nice in court.

What really gets me is here you are whinning about needing an internet connection to play the game...on the internet.

Well, would you like to tell me how you might be playing offline without an internet connection?

Because I've activated the game, yet you still have to log-in just to play the game.

Listen, I loved playing the old Starcraft game. I want to be able to play against the computer where ever I take my laptop. So if you feel like it's "whinning" then maybe you should think about a time when you didn't need to have an internet connection to play games.

Yes, I jumped at the chance of buying StarCraft 2, but only because the memorizes of having so much fun with the first one just wanted to be relived.
