Ok pc gaming has Steam, Games for WIndows, Xfire, and GAmespy for unfieing services.

IF one of them won and became the official online service like xbox live is to the xbox and psn is to the psw which one would you pick

I say Steam if they added voice chat with friends in game and fized some bugs

As unlikely as that is, I think Steam might end up on top. It's definitely in the lead at the moment, there's a ton of games and they've finally gotten their friends system working.

But I think in the future people will still prefer each game handling online functionality independently.

Xfire is an IM program..so technically its not even competing.

But yeah I think Steam would be it.

Games For Windows wants to charge people to play online, so consider it failed.

The beauty of PC gaming is that it's not unified. That's what drives innovation and great platform like steam.

F u c k Xbox live, it's not worth paying, PSN is complete uter joke

my personal opinion is steam will eventually take over distribution of PC game, it's just so easy, i've never had to worry about updating a steam game, but without someone else keeping it sharp it will grow bloated, think Intel

Steam gets my vote along with everyone else practically, but it was close to Games for Windows - Live, 1 reason, Achievements. I'm an Achievements Whore and the idea of getting them on the PC is deliciuos.

I don't know how long it's been since you've used steam, but it already has voice chat, friends in game, and they've ironed out most if not all of the old bugs

The more choices the better for us gamers. As well as it's better for developers because they can choose which system is best for their game. If Games for Windows "won" then if a company wanted to do an online game and didn't like their approach and didn't have the in house money to build their own system, well, then tough noogie on them and us for that matter. As it wouldn't be as good an online experience. I would certainly want anything but Games for Windows as I see that as: (1) a way to dumbing down games to the lowest common denominator in order to lure in casual gamers who want a game they can beat by simply pressing the up arrow and (2) as a way for Microsoft to create a strangle hold over PC gaming as I'm quite sure M$ fears a Linux or Mac take over or at least lose significant market share to them. Microsoft already has a virtual monopoly on operating systems, if they monopolize any segment of gaming we're not going to see a lot of innovation. In fact, most games seem to come from marketing departments already...

Cant agree more.PC is home for third party developers, and what they want is freedom.
